My NC 3.5 (2010) has just a Cobalt back box as a mod. It sounds great, deep note,not unsociable, no droning but a really nice growl when you are on the gas and even a few mild pops on overrun. Highly recommended as a cheap mod to improve the exhaust sound.
Good, I'm after a cheap option to add a bit more drama. Of course some major BBR work would be nice, but I can't justify the cost...at the moment.

Great video mate 👍 I'm in love with the individual throttle bodies on BBR's Super 225 package - ITBs really add a whole new dimension to the driving experience for any naturally aspirated car! I think it justifies its steep pricetag haha

Steep price tag? Tbh for a conversion that clean, and that works that well, I'm surprised it doesn't cost twice as much! I'm glad it doesn't but boy am I surprised lol!
@@griffins5655 Objectovely speaking, for power-hungry people who are use to turbo tuning, it is a steep price tag to pay for the power/torque increase you gain - but I'm not the person who looks for power for ITBs, I like ITBs for their induction sound and throttle response
My 2.0 2006 was stock. Fitted a Cobalt, £220 from Moss in 2016. Sounds better than OE, beautifully made and looks good with larger diameter outlets. After a few months I decided the mid section was getting crusty rusty, didn't want to spend a fortune so bought a Japspeed stainless steel with a 200 cell sports cat for £80 ish. Note - The 2nd cat has to be dumped to fit. Good sound and I swear it gives the car a bit more low down grunt. However, it was too loud and would have drawn the wrong sort of attention. The answer was 2 x 60mm diameter motorbike decibel killers, one in each tailpipe (£10 Ebay). These quietened it down but being more restrictive gave too much back pressure causing popping on the overun. The solution was to drill a ring of 8 x 1/4 inch holes around the decibel killers. No more popping and I'm very pleased with the result...a sporty, beefy sound, sociable when driven sensibly, doesn't induce earache and passes the mot without the intermediate cat.

I'd recommend a Jass Performance aluminium gear knob. It makes the gear changes much more positive than the standard one in my opinion.

I got it in my NB ,sound amazing .and pretty quiet at low RPM ,it awake at 3000.

I thinking of buying the cobolt for my 2013 NC mx5, Not sure how it will sound? These videos aren't really to much help . Car is all stock at present.
@Carl Moss It's noticeably louder than stock and really brings out the unique sound of the MZR engine too. You wouldn't be disappointed, especially for the price.

I have the racing beat super cup manifold with a standard midsection and IL backbox and I love it. I ran the back box for about a year before putting the manifold on myself, and getting it tuned at Blink. The manifold really opens it up e sound and now it pops and burbles really nice. It's swear not as much as miatamood's setup, which is the same, but maybe that's down to the tune. I had this setup on a previous MX5 and love it so much I got the same again. Not that impressed with IL Motorsport's quality, is was third time lucky with the backbox, so I got the racing beat manifold which is lovely but expensive.

It's all about the tone, I like deeper sounding exhausts without droning. There are too many overly loud, harsh sounding options about, which in my opinion sound terrible.
I'll probably plump for the reasonably priced Cobalt backbox, and if I manage to do it in stages I'll get the BBR 185, and then 200 upgrades.
The Super225 sounds amazing, but £4000 is a bit rich for me.
The green miata is the best one for me... like a balance between some extra oomph and not overly loud to drown out music playing in the cabin
Got a full Goodwin Racing System on my NC1 LE about 2 years ago and absolutely love it on both the street and the track. Well worth the money.

Many of these combinations are fantastic sounding at first. True test is after a 5 hour trip. Ask me how I know. GWR ceramic coated Street Header. This has a cat. GWR Helmholtz mid pipe. The helmholtz chamber after the secondary cat reduces "drone" at highway speeds that can be annoying for longer drives. GWR SuperQ backbox with out any baffles. I put one on on the left side when taking longer trips. Sounds good to me. I installed a FM Supercharger so than changes the noise level a bit.

All i want is it to be just a bit louder than stock with some more character to it. Stock it basically has no sound at all, at least as I know it from my 1.8. But upgrading this would be silly if I could just sell it and buy the 2.0, which I am probably going to do anyways. I do not need the extra power, but I want the 6-speed, the LSD and the Recaro seats.

@@wjfowlston8098 Depends on your point of view. You will always get used to how much power your car has. Pre facelifts have longer gears and probably feel slower than they have to. After driving my mothers shitbox for a few days, my mx5 felt like a rocket sled. Without knowing where you are and what cars are available in your local used market, I would say the 1.8 is just fine. If there are some 2.0 available for a good price, I would consider that. But in the end, overall condition and the lack of rust are always more important.

Here in Switzerland any vehicle over 4 years old have to have a two-yearly technical inspection and any swaps have to pass regulations to be permitted for roadworthiness, otherwise the car is not roadworthy and may not be allowed on public roads. The previous owner of my True Red NC FL 2.0 Sport had a back box replacement. I am surprised it was permitted. The tone is extremely deep. Manufacturer is German BBK. All the best, Rob in Switzerland

I just got a full cobra pipe and exhaust with IL headers and it sounds loud! It has little pops and bangs. The 16year old in me likes it a lot. I only drive for the grins anyway.
Top video .I have the Cobra Race back box on my NC. Loud at first but after a few hundred miles it Carbons up and is quieter.
I have a full Goodwin Racing System, manifold, 200 cell mid pipe and twin exhaust back box. The noise is great and the build quality is excellent.

My ‘06 has a catless header, oem midpipe, and the Tomei is *so loud* that I put the oem muffler back on between autocross & track events so it’s street/drone friendly.

Great video, really enjoy your content. I fitted the Cobalt to mine and it sounds great. Quite a deep burble and at motorway speeds you get a lovely pop when coming off, then back on the throttle. Be interested to know how people get on with the decat manifold and the UK mot emissions test.

Obviously, we all have different objectives. Some want a race sound, some want a supercar sound and others want to hear their radios.
I'm a bit in between. I like the supercar, metallic, sound but I also like to cruise with the radio on.
I'm not sure what exhaust I have on mine but it it is different because it sounds very sporty on acceleration, and I love that, but it tends to be a boomy sound on deceleration; which is irritating. So I'm still undecided.

They’re all Awesome! Some not for me though..I have a road sports back box fitted which suits me on my daily commute.
I have the GWR cat-less header, GWR mid w/ a single cat and resonator, and the GWR Street single. The only real compliment the car ever gets is for the sound. 🤣 It's loud enough for daily driving. The Race Single sound was nice on the otherwise stock exhaust, but I didn't like it with the header/mid. It was really loud and had a horrible tone, IMO. All of the GWR exhaust pieces are really nice and they have O2 sensor extensions to make it bolt, plug, and play.
Btw, the Hemholtz mid pipe is a really great addition to improve sound output and reduce the drone of the stock exhaust.
The ITBS make a Huge difference in exhaust noise though.
The BBR Decat + BBR 200 Cel + Cobra Sport combination is interesting, a sound quite unlike the others! Loud and sharp! I LIKE it, but am not sure I could live with it.
I've just put on the IL Motorsport back box and it sounds lovely and deep. Looking forward to getting the Racing Beat exhaust manifold which should be here next week. Will then be EcuTek remapped.
Another great video. Some sounded awesome and some were a bit too loud for me and I think my neighbours might fall out with me. Certainly something to think about.

Great video. Another exhaust option could be to have one designed and built to your own requirements. I had mine built and fitted last year she has quad pipes out the back and looks great in my opinion, sounds lovely too and doesn't cost much more than most factory built exhausts. Could send you a photo if you are interested.

The Miata has its virtues and I keep looking into it now and again, so I'm glad there are videos like this to remind me what they sound like.
The Cobalt muffler... I would absolutely complain if my car sounded like that.
I liked the Cobra Sport mufflers at idle. Once they revved, blegh 🤢
GReddy Ti-C sounded terrible at idle, bland and buzzy going down the road.
The cars with the BBR decat and stuff just sounded like kazoos.
If I was James' neighbor, I know *I* wouldn't like him. I would rev my Evo as my way of telling him to shush.
The yellowish car with the Racing Beat header sounded okay, but I think I would tire of that sound after a while.
The car with the Tomei "Stage 1" exhaust sounded like someone blew a high-pressure air hose into a small kazoo. DO NOT WANT.
Stage 3 sounded good at idle, and *only* at idle.
If I could think of a way of tidying up the rear "diffuser" plastic panel I would definitely go for a single exit exhaust. I think it would look a bit gay having a space where the tail pipe used to poke out.
This is going to sound *wink* very strange. Last November, I bought a 2011 mx5 gs from a chrysler dealership and they have no clue of what’s installed on the car. It has racing beat catless manifold, stock midpipe (I think it is, I didn’t jack up the car to confirm) and racing beat backbox. Whenever I drive near a cop I had to go easy on the throttle lol

GWR Race single and decat header sounds full race car.
Seems like the more mods they had, the more ricey they sounded- except for Miata Mood's. I didn't care for James' or Goodwin racing. Way too ricey and high pitched buzzing sound. Miata Mood's kept that nice deeper sound to it. Sounded great when starting up. Cobra boxes sounded nice. I might have to start there with my little 2014 Club I recently got. She's red with black accents. Named her Azula :)

I think my legs would have fallen off after 700 miles, the RHD bulge in the transmission tunnel isn’t kind to tall people!
Mine had a Cobalt on it when I bought it, swapped it for a Cobra Race. One I’ve dropped the ride height and had my wheels refurbed, I’ll look at a de-cat

Hey Dom. I went down the Longlife Exhaust route (Southampton branch).. mine sounds very similar to the IL Motrorsport in your video. I had a cat back system fitted with the twin back boxes. Bit cheaper than IL too. Can send audio clips and pics - have sent you a message via your website.
My Roadster Sport exhaust sounds exactly like the car with the dog running behind it.
I want to hear one with BBR manifold and BBR midpipe but stock on the back (super 200 cams as well would be great)... not found one like that yet.

I have a feeling that GReddy exhaust video is labeled incorrectly by the person who sent it to you. Cuz online searches turn up nothing for that exhaust model in a dual-exit configuration
After contacting GReddy directly, my initial thought was correct. GReddy does not make a Ti-C system for miatas. So no idea what exhaust he was using

Not possibly using titanium for an exhaust… that would cost a fortune and be very difficult to work with and it would be too brittle. Most likely stainless as it looks good and sounds good.
I think Miatas tend to get really raspy really quickly. I think the hot setup is the BBR 225 kit with the decat headers and ITBs, and then either a stock or very mild back box. The important thing is the intake noise. Those ITBs sound like Keiichi Tsuchiya's singing voice, if you know what I mean.

The cars with racing beat decat - what is the part? Is it the racing beat headers, so they wipe out the first cat? Or a different part? Thx I think the decat, stock midpipe and some kind of mild back box upgrade sounds great.
Yeah header/exhaust manifold all the same part. Although a decat version is now illegal in the UK.

I've heard of people disguising straight pipes as cats, though I would never recommend doing anything illegal I think this is done quite a lot.

The Helmholtz pipes sound good, but cost 3X as much as most others.

That’s a tough one! Purely on sound I like the I.L. and the Cobalt race. But I’ve also heard good things about the decat RB manifolds..! A small part of me would want the full Tomei for weekends though 😂

I have owned a '99 nb miata. Bought new. I am perfectly happy with my OEM muffler and additionally, still after 20 yrs. Perfectly intact. ...why would you want to alter the perfectly fine OEM muffler?
Most of the mufflers tested sound miserable. Save your money if you have the need to waste your money. Fools!
