Reminds me of how Valve says that players practically NEVER naturally look upwards in video games. Valve's level designers always need to add cues, like lighting, framing architecture, an enemy shooting tracer bullets from somewhere high, or even a scripted flock of birds flying up towards what the player needs to see.

Everything like new in the office. But they are Swedes. So every meeting room was spotless, with white board pens returned to their holder, nibs down. And for larger meetings in the boardroom, they had folding chairs that wre stored off the floor on two long poles attached to the wall. You just slid off how many you needed. Awesome to see you put it to the test. In the case of Spider-Man, you’re considering active and passive observation- people don’t look up much passively (I’ve chilled on many rooftops that I probably shouldn’t have and my legs hanging off the roof went entirely unnoticed if I was more than three stories up), but people are actually LESS likely to look up in situations like the one in which Sam was placed. He was expecting an armed combatant so his priority was clearing cover that could hide an armed assailant on foot. If you know you’re chasing Spider-Man, I would expect more henchman prioritize verticality 😅 that said, really awesome way to test this. I love how professionally and thoroughly you test the hypothesis- brings back childhood mythbusters vibes in the best possible way 🔥

This video was so fun!!! Love the confidence at the start 'you'd sense someone's presence' lol. I think it would be interesting to see another iteration of this where the person being chased is in a generic superhero costume. Not a spiderman one, but something that indicates maybe they're more than human. This obviously is perfect for when spidey is in plain clothes and they just think he's a guy, but I always find it frustrating when the baddies know that they're chasing a superhero and still don't look up. Maybe the laws of physics really are THAT ingrained in us - obviously you'd need a different set up and crew but it could be a fun follow up.

In college, my dorm's hallways were narrow enough that one could jump in the air and thrust out your limbs to catch yourself, one arm and one foot on each wall. Then, you could wall-crawl to the ceiling. I would routinely do that when I saw someone go into the bathroom and wait to drop down behind them and tap their head on the way down. If one of my friends who was in on the joke was out in the hall, he would loudly cough as I landed to distract from what little noise I made, and if the "victim" didn't bodily turn around but just looked behind him, he wouldn't see me.
Then as they started to walk off, I would grab them around the ankle, scaring them.

peripheral field of vision is what makes it hard you need tall ceilings. its like in FPS, like halo, if you jumped on top of stuff people didnt normally or go on top of you could stay hidden quite often. But games have limited vision angles...

In my old d&d group we concluded that nobody ever looked up. So we made a house rule where if you didn't specify that you look up when checking for things, you don’t see it. It made for some hilarious and sometimes frustrating moments. And don’t worry, this logic applied to npc's too.

The tanuki stealth technique. People generally don’t have a tendency of looking any more than a 45 degree angle. When looking for an enemy or target beyond a certain size, you tend not to remember to check above. After all, how would they get there, and how would they remain up there. People just subconsciously ignore the possibility in favor of more reasonable possibilities.
