You thrive when things get crazy! This is how I know you can do this. I love it too. Cant wait to see you shine in the full swing of things! ☮🌱🛐🌱🐞🐞🐞🐞💪😜
I really admire how hard you work, Nicole! I have had my own one-woman business for about 30 years and I don’t have to work as hard now as I did in the beginning. My hope for you is that, before you know it, you’ll be reaping all of the rewards that you so richly deserve! By the way, I live in central Newfoundland (zone 5a) and it’s definitely still winter here but showing signs of Spring! 🥰🤗👍🪴👏
Dang, Girl! Talk about burning the candle at both ends. I sure admire your determination and work ethic but fear you may burn out. Praying that doesn’t happen. You deserve to have it all, as hard as you work. Thanks for the farm update. Take care of yourself! 💚
I feel you with the burned hole edges! It gives me the heebie jeebies to feel it… plus my hands feel raw later. I like watching your videos because I realize I’m not alone with all the things involved with flower farming! Thanks for sharing :)
until I watched you never saw ranuculous... single mom working second shift...now kidfree : )) got some corms from dollartree and was amazed that all 4 sprouted but are slow which is ok as still cold outside in IL too. Thanks for this video even though it really put more work on you.
Just a tip with the Dewitt cloth. When you pull it up, use a silver sharpie or maybe even those oil paint pens to mark what the spacing is on each roll. Then next year, you don't have to think about it and can roll them out where you need them. Anything that saves me a brain cramp or time later is a bonus. Love my Dewitt ground cloth, totally saved my sanity in the garden.
Chemist here... Nicole, I love your vitality and I'm living my dreams through your channel at the moment :) I understand that burning holes is a really fast method and viable outdoor, but I'm concerned for your health since you're doing it in an enclosed environment where there is not great air circulation, and also the fumes can accumulate over time (even if you said working at 15 mins intervals). I don't exactly know which kind of plastic your landscape cloth is made of (from Dewitt website it seems to be polypropylene), but the fumes that developes during combustion of plastics contain toxic and even carcinogenic substances... So, when you're working inside the hoophouse, instead of burning, maybe you could try to melt a hole in the film with a hot object (even if I understand it might take more time). You could try to build an attachment to place a cut tin can on top of your torch flame to speed things up... Also, I don't know if there are suitable masks for "burnt plastics fumes" available to the general public: you would need special filters to absorb the molecules (not particles) developed, and just using a random mask (even those for spray paint) wouldn't be effective.
and thanks for the hoop house tour. how exciting. 1st year grower here in rochester area zona 6a. feeling deflated with terrible to no germination on anything but petunias. I needed your inspiration today!!!
I had no idea anemones could handle such cold temperatures, I should have planted mine out weeks ago! So nice to see you planting into the hoophouse, I can't wait to see it blooming :)
Wow, busy is an understatement… You are rocking all the things! Glad you’re able to have family to help and support you, as well as getting *paid* help, too!!!
Nicole,I wanted to share a tip for keeping your hands warmer. I wear those fitted stretchy knit dollar store gloves you see everywhere in the winter, under my garden gloves. They work great!
I feel you on this! I have a stack of seeds with an optimistic note: “plant by second week of February” and I’m finally accomplishing it the second week of March. Lol oh well! It won’t grow at all if I don’t plant it. Good luck this season!
Hey Nicole, happy things are moving along even if it’s not at the rate you wanted! I am hoping to be able to plant my Ranunculus out by the first of April but with the weather being so cold I will continue to have the wait and see attitude! Definitely not as warm in NY as it was last year at this time! ❤
Nicole, if you keep the trigger pulled on the torch it will stay lit. Just lift up, move the torch and move toward the fabric. I think it will be easier than restarting it evertime.
Thank you so much for the update. This is my first year with a hoop house and my ranunc were laying over a little bit. So very glad you touched on that knowing that it’s normal!
My ranunculus are soooo droopy just like that and I’ve had them inside so I’m glad it isn’t just me. There is new growth so I hope it’s just a common thing although I think I watered them too much
Hey Nicole, how about Dewitt punch the holes at the factory and recycle the remnants? Toxic fumes be gone ! You cannot be the only grower using their fabric this way.
Wow, I thought I was busy! Incase you didn't know, you can buy plastic with holes already in it. You could also use a mulch hole burner that burns the holes perfectly round and you don't have to bend over. The mulch hole burner is expensive but probably worth it for how many holes you are burning. Thanks for sharing your journey!
My ranunculus have been out since January uncovered they are doing just fine, next year I’m planting the corms straight into the ground, in November since I’m in 8a but this has been the coldest year ever.
Just a heads up. I’m in 8a and last year I experimented with direct planting 20 Ranuncs in the fall. I don’t have a hoop house. All but 3 rotted, so I won’t do that again. I think they got too wet. Your mileage may vary, but thought I’d mention my experience in case it’s helpful.
Dont worry Nicole. Struggle and misfortune is always present but thats what makes us stronger. I have mice eating my ranunculus.. but we are fighting back and eventually we will win. So dont worry
Oh my! Aphids hit my grow room last year, and it was devastating!! I did every thing. They did spread to many, many plants though. All the way until I finally had every thing out. 😭😭😭
I swear that you have someone with each skill/trade for every project in your family 😘😘😘. It is beautiful to see how you have all of that support. Please give yourself 5 years to build/scale this business. We all know that you have the talent and dedication, but the economy needs to recover and people need to stop by your nursery instead of the box stores.I think the community is going to be blown away by the transformation at the nursery!🌸💗🌸💗🌸
Hello beautiful mama watch u all the time i luvvv your channel ur so inspirational i dont wanna sound like a downer just suggest for your health to maybe wear a mask when ur burning that propane and blk plastic so u dont breathe that in we all want u healthy ❤ your so beautiful.
Everything is going to be okay 👌! You got this, I think you are doing a great job between both places, let alone being a wife, mom, and a UA-cam channel! Do you think you will still be doing the bouquet bar on the porch?
Wow, Nicole 😮You are such a hard worker! Question 🙋🏼♀️ does Brad have a job he goes to or, does he too work for the farm? Everything is going to be amazing, I just know it! Have a Blessed Day 😊💐
Oh the work. But i wish i couls plant mine oug but i can,t put the hoophouse up and i am going to france, but we have spring with hight temps🎉🎉🎉 so hope is for end of march.
We dipped back to early spring weather here this week in SE Texas. Not a fan. I have an infestation of spider mites, and usually I treat that by banishing the plants to the outdoors... But crotons don't like 40 degree nights!
Have you thought about Hydrogen Peroxize/water to spray the bugs? Or Agriculture Vinegar/soap & Water for spraying for bugs? Organic methods seem to work much more effectively than the market purchased methods.
Did the campanula make it? I'm floored that you can start this early... in zone 4!(?) So it looks like corms are really cold-tolerant. I was curious if any of the seedlings are this tough. I've done poppies, larkspur, and calendula in mid-March under a low tunnel (Chicago zone 5) If I could start sometime in late Feb/early march in a high tunnel, I might not want to move every year :D :D :D
My anemone which I purchased from you Nichole are starting to bloom. I am delighted with them. Yes I am in So Cal. Any status on the gladiolus corm? Has anybody received them yet? Paid for back in January. I tried to email the supplier, but have received no reply. Would like to get them planted as I see glads in bloom already in other peoples yards in my ares. Thank you.
@@Queenmother1297 Thank you Renee for the update. Yes, they are beautiful. Purple, but one stray red flower slipped in the bunch. An added touch of serendipity to the grouping.
Have you thought about wearing a mask when burning the plastic? All I can think of when watching you standing over it and the burn smoke coming up is how many chemicals you are inhaling.
You should not be breathing those fumes....set a blower to re-direct the fumes away from where you're standing. It'll give you more than a headache! Please take care of yourself.
Question why would you ever lift it? Second question- my planting area has straw in the area currently and I plan to cover with the Dewitt fabric and leave whole to let the Florida heat bake the soil to try and kill fungus. I will have Roselle in pots in the area this season. Now the question- can I leave the straw and leave to decompose to feed our Florida sand/soil? My fear is when I torch to plant if there is still straw it will catch fire.
Yes, Dewitt. It works really well. I love it in my garden. Before we used it, I spent all my garden time working on weeds instead of the plants. Told my DH it needed to change and this is what we used. Night and day difference. Was able to love gardening again instead of it feeling like a never ending chore.
4 inches????? I am planting my ranunculus out this week and I thought they were supposed to be planted 9-12 inches apart. Everything I read says 9-12 inches apart. So I can be planting them 4 inches apart?
Are you surface sowing and they need light to germinate. Light dusting vermiculite on top to help maintain moisture. Good luck. If not I had success last season winter sowing them in milk jugs outside. Always a option.
@@kittiew260 This second round i surface sowed on soil blocks with humidity dome. and lisa mason ziegler said to put them on cooking rack above the heat mat. but still nothing. oh and they are under light
