I think it was more down to the team miscalculating during the race. If they knew he would be underweight then he would have been forced to pit despite wanting to stay out.
@@NotApplicableJB they kind of knew by the end that it was a bad gamble. Which may explain why Toto was sad after Russell crossed the line. Their gamble cost Russel potentially 18, 15 or even 10 points. Better that than 0

The drivers have a minimum weight as well as the cars. So the lighter drivers who are under that weight have to run a ballast to bring them up to the weight. Driver and car weight count separately
Exactly as Mr Pulse said every driver effectively weighs 80kg because if they weigh less than that then ballast is added to bring them up to that 80kg weight. But that has no effect on the weight of the car which is a separate regulation.
.what of the car that overtake from third into first in three laps. Lap 26 told Lewis box box and Lewis said tyres are still good but no response, and if car 44 haven't done all this car 63 would not have the chance to gamble. To top it up car 63 is 1.5kg less in weight
if both mercs were identical , shouldnt hamiltons car be under weight too ?? or is meant to be that hamiltons be heavier "sabotaged" or politically correct say , favoured !!
The cars are never identical really. The team blamed it on 1 the lack of in lap after the chequered flag and 2 the changes they made to each car before Quali. Russell was left with a slightly different overall setup than planned and they miscalculated the weight because of that.
Cars aren't identical. They are given ballast based on how much each driver weighs. There can also be changes based on how much rubber is worn away from their tyres.
Piastri is quiet and respectful on the surface but can and will go psycho on the track, he's become one of my favs for this reason
