#LeagueOfExtraordinaryGentlemen #SeanConnery #WTFHappenedToThisMovie
Whether or not the movie is "good", I've always found it enjoyable to watch. And I think that's what matters.
Very much ditto. It has its flaws, but it's still a not-so guilty favorite of mine.
I liked this movie I wish they had made more
agreed... it is silly, but a good time
Couldn’t agree more
Not me
I found it totally annoying and boring.
I couldn't wait for the movie to end.
I don't care what anyone says, I love The League of Extrahorny Gentlemen!
ITA.
I too like it.
it was a good movie for the time, I really like the sense of scale they made with the Nautilus, also the nice hot car they made for the movie!
I love it too
Here's another like for ya, really enjoyed the movie as well!
It's one of the most underrated films of all time! It's fantastic. Fun, daring, inventive, creative, and thoroughly enjoyable.
No the comic is
I really wanted a sequel.
I unironically enjoy this movie. I was a classic novel fan as a kid, so this was like my Avengers.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was a highly enjoyable cinematic anomaly. I liked it very much and sincerely hope that there may be plans to remake it as a rebooted science fiction and fantasy adventure series on television or elsewhere.
This was one of my favorite movies growing up
And still holds up to this day
What I liked about this movie was that Mina wasn't completely cured after being bitten by Dracula she became a dhampir she outlived her husband, Van Helsing, Holmwood, Quincy & Seward. I really liked how she can become multiple bats as she flies that was the most badass thing I've ever seen Peta was great as this new Mina.
I dont care what anybody else says. This was a good movie and a good swan song for Sean Connery.
League wasn't Zardoz but then again what is?
Very underrated. Ive grown to appreciate this film more as years have gone by
Judging by the sh*tshow on the internet over 'The Eternals' it's looking like LXG might be the better movie of the two despite its issues.
LXG is worth at least one full viewing even if only to see Connery's final on-screen performance. It's certainly better than most of the drivel the SyFy Channel broadcasts on a daily basis.
I loved this movie because as a kid i grew up reading novels of most of these characters , king solomon mines and 20 000 leagues were awesome books even Tom Sawyer, so to see them come alive in this format was just totally awesome !!!
One of my favourite movies when i was a teen. I dont know why. But the characters, build up, scenery - it was just great!
I’ve watched this movie a ew times over the years and ALWAYS enjoyed it. It’s fun and introduced me to some literary characters that I didn’t know about
I really love this movie.. very enjoyable.. nobody cares what critics think.
The James Bond being held in Alcatraz conspiracy in The Rock is my favorite movie theory.
Man I loved everything about this movie, it was up to mark for its time.
I still have this movie on DVD. Thought it was a fun and interesting movie then and is still one of my favorites. Also this is the first I learned about the comic book roots, though it's not surprising.
I love this movie as does my family. It’s a classic now
Superb writing! I didn't even know half of this stuff
I loved the film. Especially the Easter Egg newspaper headline about green flares being spotted coming from the surface of Mars... always wanted a War of the Worlds sequel!
That's what happens in the original graphic novel as I remember.
Spoiler ahead !
The league are sent to enlist a doctor called Moreau to help fight against the martians.
I am so glad to know I'm not the only person who loved this movie
I personally love that movie. I would love to see it attempted again at some point.
I loved this movie as a kid. It introduced me to so many awesome books.
Thanks to my mom, I now require a film to fall asleep to. I love this film because it took me 4 attempts before I managed to stay awake for the whole thing. It is now my go to for bedtime. 😄
I last saw this in elementary school, but I loved it.
I saw this as a kid.. and I still do!
I've never been to Venice but destroying that cgi place looked pretty crazy
i was in the real venice and its wider
I always enjoyed it.
I've never seen Connery's portrayal of bond but this movie has put it on my list of things to do.
I really loved this movie as a kid
I'm literally in awe. I had no idea he died.
One of My Favorite Comic Books and Films.
Ugh I love this movie! Such a hidden gem
It's an amazing movie especially if you go into it with an open mind
I was so disappointed in this movie. I loved the graphic novel. I loved the dysfunctional relationship between Mina and Quartermain as two incredibly broken, but very human, people finding comfort in each other. I loved the bestial but cunning nature of Hyde and how Jekyll became less and less useful as Hyde became stronger and smarter. I loved the fact that the invisible man was only on the team because he was invisible and everything else about him was loathsome as a commentary on the depths to which a government will sink to get an advantage. The movie just tossed all that away. They got Nemo right, but not the Nautilus. Mina as a vampire ruined what made her special. In the graphic novel, she was chosen because her scandalously public experience with Dracula left her with no fear and few options as a disgraced divorcee. In the movie, she's a superhero. In the graphic novel, Hyde is his own personality distinct from Jekyll. Hyde is a man who understands how to use rage and fear, but also smart enough to let his adversaries underestimate his intelligence. In the movie, he's just "smart hulk" which is boring.
I really want to see a good adaptation of the second graphic novel which had the War of the Worlds, Princess of Mars, Island of Dr. Moreau mash-up. It's my favorite. I didn't really like the attempts at cosmic horror in the black dossier although Mary Poppins as a literal manifestation of god was a very unique and interesting concept.
Biggest complaint about the movie? They left out Orlando! They could have even gone with Tilda Swinton. It would have been magnificent.
This was always a fun watch when I was a kid..
I'm a fan personally. It's a fun, entertaining ride and Connery is an engaging lead, I wish they had made a sequel!
I love the comics, but I also love the movie. I see them as two almost unrelated things.
The reason the movie deviated from the source material is that THERE WAS NO SOURCE MATERIAL... When DC approved Moore's one-page synopsis for LOEG for him to begin production on the comic, they submitted that proposal to WB, and that one page early draft is what the movie was based on.
I know it's not supposed to be a good movie, but it's been one of my personal favorites for quite a while.
I loved this movie when I was younger. I'm going to watch it again today.
I watched this movie in theaters when I was 13. I loved every minute of it.
I never thought it was that bad of a movie. Shame it never got any kind of adptation after that, the concept of public domain literary characters is awesome and has a lot of potential.
I love this film...and now knowing now the background to it, I think I love it more
I just finished an idea set in the 1700s, now working on writing a version of the league of extraordinary gentlemen, with a vampire, Jack the ripper, mr hyde, a phantom carriage driver (ghost rider like) and a unique bobbie policeman.
Never understood all the rancor this movie produced. I loved it and still watch now and then, the acting was certainly better than Sky Captain, another movie I actually liked weirdly enough.
I never thought this movie was THAT bad, it wasn't great but I never thought it was terrible either-I always thought it was an interesting idea to bring those types of characters together to form a team.
I first saw this movie when it came out on DVD, and honestly, it wasn't bad. I mean, yes, I see the issues with it as they're very loud and clear. It's a mishmash of "Van Helsing" and "The Avengers" or "Justice League". It has some issues for sure, but there were some fun moments in the movie. One of those, if it's on, I'll watch it flicks. From reading the comments on here, glad I'm not the only one who thinks that.
MOVIE WAS AND STILL IS AMAZING
i liked this film. it had flaws but would have liked to have seen a follow up
If Connery wasn't part of it, I most likely would have never watched it.
But I am glad I did.
Alan Moore's work is far more complex than your average summer blockbuster. They had to dumb down the work so much there isn't much point at all
Connery retired after this, stating Hollywood had died. On set he punched the director in the face out of anger.
Interestingly, unchecked anger and violence are a stage and part of dementia, which he eventually passed from.
Alan Quartermain...now that's a name I have not heard in quite some time.
I enjoyed this movie, I think it was slightly ahead of its time and desperately needed a director's cut
Great film! My brothers and I loved this movie
I absolutely LOVE this movie!
Haters gonna hate
I’ve never understood the hate this movie gets.
I seen it in the theaters and like....... still do.
My ideal reboot cast:
Sam Neil as Quartermain
Matt Smith as Dorian Grey
Simon Pegg as Doctor Jekyll
Steve. Merchant as Invisible Man
Eva Green as Mina
Dev Patel as Nemo
Ive watched this movie a bunch of times and never realized that character was supposed to be tom sawyer until now. Maybe they shouldve left in the huck finn reference
Id love if they remade this
Something is wrong with reviewers and critics, they say good movies like this are bad and the majority of the boring slow crap on Netflix is good.
I also thought this movie was done very well. Always watch it when I see it on.
Yeah, it's not the greatest movie to ever grace the earth, but it's a really fun watch.
Some cool twists, awesome use of an invisible man, Sean Connery, properly ludicrous plot points, it's all there.
My biggest complaint is, fantastically, how large the number of players is. The use of certain characters seems rather forced to include them, such as Harker, Sawyer, Dorian and Nemo. Theyve got some neat things going, but all in all, there could have been more plot with fewer important characters.
I've never understood the hate for this film, I consider it a really well done genre picture.
Alan Moore publicly said he hated it. Sean Connery publicly said he hated it. It doesn’t really follow the source material.
While it may be a fun action movie, I think those three things likely get the movie tagged ad “bad”
@@Loupgarou21 once a piece of art is out.. it does not matter what the creators think. It's got a life of its own
@@lukemckee9772
Exactly!
@@Loupgarou21 i mean even if say back then premium channels like hbo acquire it and air it trying to follow the comic is gonna be damn hard on multiple stuff. from the props itself, cgi detail for the way out there stuff, the very hardcore scenes with even say hbo if air it be like "whoa hold on. we maybe hardcore for a channel but even those scenes we gotta set our foot down." which is hard. even in todays standards that will be still hard to do on those hardcore scenes.
LoEG will forever something no way in damn hell will follow the source unless its one of those "signing my own death wish" for the director, crew, actors and company on how much legal and rep chaos that will unleash.
It is simply a bad movie. Yes, it will have its fans and that is awesome. But that does not change the fact that the majority did not like it.
A lot of people hated this movie, including Sean Connery. But I liked it
Same I thought it was a fun movie
me too is just weird fun
A lot of people liked this movie too. Myself included.
It’s completely daft but I love it too.
He turned down Gandalf to play in this 😂😂😂
I unironically like this movie.
I know it's nothing special... but I always have fun watching it.
Good for you. 💯💯👍
Not every movie has to be Oscar bait. This movie is a lot of fun, start to finish.
Exactly this is on of those movies where I know exactly what I'm going to get.
I loved the film, myself! I've never been able to understand why other's think it's garbage.
Me 2 I really the movie too!
I was about to say "Unpopular opinion, but I like League of Extraordinary Gentlemen for what it is: Good popcorn fun." Looking at the comments, that may not be so much of an unpopular opinion.
That's my take away. It's a movie.
Stale popcorn
I had a blast watching it.I was actually surprised at how much hate it got.
I always thought of it as a guilty pleasure
Good popcorn fun is a perfect description for it. I've always had a soft spot for this film since first watching it.
The fact that they were able to piece together a somewhat coherent story with all their behind the scenes complications makes me respect the creators much more. We all think we can do what they do, but there are always things that don’t go as planned and you have to try to find a way.
A bad adaptation? Absolutely. A bad film? Debatable. A boring 2 hours? Never.
Shame Peter Jackson didn't ask Connery to play King Théoden.
I don't think his accent would have worked in the movie lol
It's a good time filler and cheesy enough to be enjoyable bland the actors make it worth it
A bad adaptation? Absolutely. A bad film? Absolutely. A boring 2 hours? Absolutely

This is the type of film which welcomes a remake. The concept is there, the franchise potential is there, the blueprint is there and the aesthetics are there. Put better effects, a more appealing presentation, cast wisely, trim some of the fat and you got your blockbuster.
No No and Fuck No.......have you been paying attention to any of the films that Hollywood has produced lately? They are woke pieces of shit that no one likes. They will destroy the original. Leave shit alone
@@odieonekaraoke Yeah they could suck the humour (which is the redeeming part of this movie) out of it and make it grim and serious.

@@dontcare7086 It’s not the wokeness that is the problem. There are commedians who are entierly PC who are still funny, because they put in the effort. No the problem is that lately the tone has been off because they keep trying to aim things that should be funny to teens by making them edgy. And not even interesting edgy, but just darkening the color pallet, not making as many jokes, and calling it a day. It’s lazy. Sheer lazyness.
The props! Every mechanical thing in this film looks perfect. Always enjoyed this film. Much inspiration.
"The answer I always fall back on is to quote Raymond Chandler. People said: 'Raymond, don't you feel devastated by how Hollywood has destroyed your books?' And he would take them into his study, point to the bookshelf and say, 'There they are. Look, they're fine.' The film has got nothing to do with my work. It has a coincidental title to a book I've done and they've given me a huge wedge of money. No problem with that." -- _Alan Moore_
gay
And then Alan Moore didn't even want the huge wedge anymore. I admire his principles and I can say in all certainty I definitely would not do the same in his position.
Truth. Hollywood has made tons of bad movies, and tv shows, based on great books. And all Hollywood has ever managed to do is hurt THEMSELVES with such failures. The original sources are still quite beloved, in spite of the bad movies/shows.
Meh, Alan Moore was a leftie wanker before the world got over run with leftie wankers. The guy is still dumbfounded that people like Rorschach because Schach was given all the traits Moore hated in right wing people. He was supposed to be hated and seen as a villain in the end. Which, hilariously, the readers almost unanimously like.
I have no love for hollywood and their butchering of others source material but I have about the same amount of love for Alan Moore as a human being.
@@Shiirow Who cares about your love for Alan Moore as a human being. Be grateful that he gave you Rorschach, even if it was an accident (instead of hours of bitching about lefties, but no good comics).

I loved that line. Second to his "I am an immortal, not a gazelle!"

I watched this movie thinking it was an incredible concept, but was disappointed with the quality of the movie. THEN I learnt it was based on a critically acclaimed comic. THEN I read the comic and loved it. THEN I read most of the classics it was based on so I could enjoy it on a different level, and I broadened my literary knowledge in the process.
Most important movie I've ever watched.
Nice! I was familiar with all of the individual stories, 20,000 Leagues, The Invisible Man, Dr. Jeckel and Mr. Hyde and the like as I'm fond of these old stories. I was not aware at the time however, that the League was an established comic. So...that's one that I missed!
I will give you the benefit...You at least educated yourself...Just from the movie alone...Granted I know that the movie wasn't spot on by the comic, but you found something to explore..From Twain to Vernes and beyond...that is awesome. But this movie was NOWHERE near the comic book version.
Yes it made you wanna learn more about the characters via their literature counterparts
Dorian Gray: The Picture of Dorian Gray
Mina Harker: Dracula
Jekyll/Hyde: The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
Captain Nemo: 10000 Leagues Under the Sea
Skinner: The Invisible Man

Funnily enough if it's executed well concepts going over the heads of an audience add depth and immersion due to that complexity as long as it's not to do with the immediate narrative, like all the off camera references and 'world building' in the first Star Wars made you feel true immersion and possibilities beyond that story being told.

I didn't hate it when I saw it in theaters. It's a bit uninspired, a bit weak. Connery sure didn't seem to be trying very hard to act. But it's not the worst thing I've ever watched.
@@PhantomFilmAustralia nah mate, amazon. £1.49 rental.
I mean, I went to Blockbuster....
I liked the movie.
I bought the movie, have watched it a half dozen times and actually like it. I never cared what critics thought.
Yeah the League had its problems, but overall I enjoyed it. There were worse movies. I think the best part was Connery's portrayal of an aged, bitter Quatermain was freaking awesome. I know he retired after it, which always sucked. It is a shame the movie didn't have an experienced director, it could have been so much better.
I went to see it super early in the morning when it came out, pretty much normal hours were all sold out. I think I got a ticket and must have been around 8:30 AM or so. The theater was packed as hell. I loved the movie. I have few complaints but it felt so fun. Good action movie tied with fantasy.
Studio interference had nothing to do with the director.
Connery had much worse films in his career, like Zardoz, Meteor, Highlander II : The Quickening (so bad the fans of Highlander deny it exists); The Avengers (nothing to do with the superhero franchise).
There were a lot of great actors in the film, with some good parts, its the Special Effects, and the Plot (The Venice part was a complete Flop). It looks like time and budget were extreme constraints and the events in Prague doomed the result to just "ok" status, with the lawsuit being a nail in the coffin considering the competition it faced at the box office.
@@josephteller9715 I've seen the director's cut of Highlander 2, on pirate video, a very long time ago, and apparently the cinema version is very different.
Zardoz is just bizarre, yet Connery didn't understand 'the lord of the rings'!
I agree with others here, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and I’m glad that for me at least, none of the behind the scenes conflict came through. I’ve watched it a bunch of times and probably will keep doing that
I love this movie!!!! Such a shame with all the crap this movie gets.
Yeah this is an enjoyable movie..folks need to lighten up and not be so serious 🙄
Highly underrated. Was always hoping for a sequel.
I love the movie, it wasn't a masterpiece like it could have been, but it was a fun romp!
The comics are very good, really something different at that time. The movie is OK, I enjoyed it… Sean Connery made it stand out and a good deal of the box office was his presence in the movie.
One observation though… I’m not a book guy, but I really liked H. R. Haggard’s books about Allan Quatermain… Haggard’s descriptions about Africa in King’s Solomon Mine are very vivid, I usually can’t visualize in books, but this one made me feel like I was there. This alone is very impressive not even considering Haggard had never been in Africa. I don’t think the following books are as good, but it’s nice to read about Allan Quatermain.
Weird recommending a book in a movie channel, but I highly recommend reading King Solomon’s Mine.
This will forever be one of my favorite good-bad films
Maybe it’s because I was young but I enjoyed the movie
Me too. It was a fun movie.
As a fan of all of the novels used in this movie, I remember being very excited to watch this movie. It still holds a fond place in my memories and I enjoy rewatching it any time I can. Thank you for all the behind the scenes information
One of the differences is they made Quarterman the leader instead of Mina.
I loved this movie but one piece of if always made me laught so hard and that is Connery's and West's characters superpowers, one is immortal only in Africa and another is simply American
Quartermain was never a superhero. He was an actual hero and successful adventurer in books and films well before this one.
Yes, it has very little in common with the comic, but i did appreciate the work of the SFX department in their work on Hyde. Fleming(sp) did a great job
i thought they did a great job with hyde. i think a toned down version of hyde would make for a great monk mayfair, if they ever decided to actually make a new doc savage movie.

I think it's a shame her career didn't boom after that portrayal.
Yeah, Peta was excellent. She made that character hers.
Absolutely! That scene in the library when she kills an enemy and then uses a mirror is so hot! I'm assuming she's partially a vampire since they wouldn't have reflections.

It's an irony that the "League of Gentlemen" was lacking gentlemen
That's Extraordinary!

Even more ironic : It is revealed, in a section of the graphic novel series called The Sincerest Form Of Flattery, that the French had their own rival League during La Belle Epoque - (the group called Les Hommes Mystérieux) - and one of its most recognisable members is none other than Arsène Lupin, (the quintessential) Gentleman Cambrioleur.
this movie is an underrated gem. I remember watching it in the theater and I was like "this movie was alright". it's not great, but it's alright.
Stephen Norrington was amazing

Penny dreadful series is basicaly league as it supposed to be.
I agree with that. Penny Dreadful is great!!!
I'm constantly baffled by the decision by several adaptations to turn Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde into a steampunk Hulk. According to the original, it make Dr. Jekyll not into a hulking behemoth, but into a Jack the Ripper style murderer, and in fact, made him shorter!
Less cinematic.
Yes, he would have looked more Neanderthal I guess.
But the same thing happened in "Van Helsing".
@@eefneleman9564 EXACTLY! Two movies released fairly close together did the EXACT same thing! It's almost like these idiots didn't read the book they're referencing.
Because the Hulk itself was an ode to Jekyll and Hyde, the point was a retrofit superhero team. Of course you get a steampunk hulk.
They actually addressed this in Vol 2 of the book: Hyde mentions that he was once shorter than jeckyll, who I think he described as a "once being a strapping fellow". I think Moore got the idea from a throwaway line in the original book about jeckyll mentioning that Hyde seemed to be "growing in him" or something. Don't know about that, never read Stevenson's novel, and the article mentioning it I read at least 10 years ago, but it kinda makes sense: the longer they go on, the more dominant and powerful Hyde gets, so why not physically bigger as well as Jeckyll shrinks (he's pretty scrawny in the books and the movie)? And they've been together at least 50 or so years at this point.
