His book The Worship Pastor should be a must read for all leaders of worship and production ministries at churches.

Man, this stuff is so good!!! I’ve kind of asked myself a bunch of questions related to the use of tech in our gatherings (being a worship musician/leader turned tech team leader and probably transitioning back in the near future) and it seemed to me like hardly anyone actually stops to ask themselves and me:
Why do we do the stuff we do? If we do one thing, we’re not doing another thing. So we better make sure it’s actually in the interest of advancing God’s kingdom.
Thank you Churchfront guys for making this available. Seriously. Thank you guys so much.

    (1) trivializing worship by a preoccupation with atmospherics/ mood (it's all about how worship makes me feel); (2) misdirecting worship by having a human-centered rather than God-centered focus (it's all about me, the worshiper);
    (3) deadening worship by substituting stones for bread (the loss of the Word of God); (4) perverting worship with emotional, self-indulgent experiences at the expense of true liturgy; and (5) exploiting worship with market-driven values. 2
After observing trends in worship for a half century, I agree with Humphrey completely.

Jer 17:9 - one of my life verses. I often get strange looks when I tell people that one. Yet, it helps me know the fundamental challenge of living as a broken man in a broken world, and helps me navigate the spaces between the Kingdom of God and the kingdoms of this world.

      If books are of interest:
The Worship Pastor: Zac Hicks (the speaker in this video of course, also includes TONS of great book references)
      Christ-Centered Worship: Bryan Chapell
Engaging with God: David Peterson (dense and academic, but amazingly thorough at showing the connections between OT worship practices and NT worship practices)

When those in the modern Evangelical church use the term "worship team", do they mean the musicians and singers? Let us then use that more accurate language. From a truly biblical perspective it would seem that the entire Church is the Worship Team.

A little backstory. I was raised by atheist punk rockers and was a weird person even by secular standards. I used to think that money was imaginary, the stock market was black magic (still do kinda actually) and that society was an imaginary construct in general and it was all stupid and i was going to go to a commune in the Ozarks to make nut butter.
I won't get into how I came to Christ but I had no exposure to Christian culture and I legitimately hate it and can't relate to it whatsoever. It's like an entirely different foreign culture.
So much so that even though I believe in God and have come to Christ, I have this idea that he's this weird like boring, culturally bland, suburban white God and going to church is this phony, performative soul killing experience that gives me the same feeling as going to an Applebee's and I dont trust Him to fully transform my life. I try to relate to God, I try to find beauty in Him but I dont really see it, aside from Jesus' work on the cross sometimes.
I know that sounds really harsh but you have no idea how bad it is. The only reason I want God is so I don't go to hell but I dont really want Him that much and I want to die so badly.

I'd suggest getting along to a church where there's great teaching and fellowship. Or maybe check out some of Tim Keller's stuff online.
Basically we're all in the same position as you are to varying degrees, but as it says in Romans, God can transform our minds. It's something Paul keeps coming back to and really important. Being filled with the spirit is part of the answer but changing the way we think is transformative!
      Hope this helps...

@@steveblake6110 If I could find such a place, I would have been there I assure you. Its been 5 years.
I don't know why I wrote all that but I have to keep it inside because people don't get it and something about this video triggered me.
I dont even think everyone is bad, just I couldn't even adjust to secular culture and this is horrifying for me.

Culture should imitate our faith led lives. NOT the other way around. Luddites we are not, but Christians are headed into the Metaverse with Zuckerburg in the pulpit. That's NOT Christ's intention for His Bride. Please consider that, my fellow followers of Christ... I watch this presentation for the good feels and lighting excitement, and the netflix cliffhanger...where in scripture does God's revelation describe these types of tools? I'll give you a hint, it's not in the first century church of the apostles...

The brass serpent was a counterfeit, not from Father but from the "god of this world" aka the god of moses aka the devil playing god. Jesus rebuked this very act in Matthew 7:9-11, making it clear that the OT god of the Israelites was NOT Our Father.
"9 For what man is there among you, which if his son ask him bread, would give him a stone?
10 Or if he ask fish, will he give him a serpent?
11 If ye then, which are evil, can give to your children good gifts, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven, give good things to them that ask him?"
John 1:17 says "For the Law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
18 NO MAN hath seen God at any time: that only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, HE hath declared Him."

Unfortunately the very edifice you're preaching this truth in has invested so much into these things, it's too late for them to repent or Unravel it without major disruption or inconvenience of the assembly of the Saints. After you leave they have to go right back to the norm of all these things your warning about

The American evangelical church has conflated worship and evangelism. We don’t win the lost in worship - we worship in worship. Worship is not meant to be relevant but to shape our hearts through retelling of the grand story of the Trinity and catechizing our hearts.
