I appreciate that moment you took to look at that gentleman's project photos. It was revealing of your character as a builder and as a community member.
Keep the Kapex for best. No trimming out the fence posts during the garden renovations! DeWalt got years left in it for the rough stuff At least your Wallet fits in your pocket now. Much thinner thanks to the invoice
Hang on to the box and the packing. If you ever need to send it in for repair it makes life much easier. After sending a couple different tools in for repair to festool, I can say that they really do go above and beyond. Their warranty really adds value to the purchase.
Cameron must be doing well to have two employees manage his Warehouse inventory. Congratulations on the new saw Scott. I’m looking forward to watching the review.
It's OK Scott. You are no hypocrite. Kapex is a fricking sweet, well made, toy - I mean tool. Looking forward to watching you walk through the thing and use it in future videos! I just sold my cheap miter saw. One day, I too, will have a Kapex to play with.
Very good choice. The Kapex is the most accurate mitre saw I ever used. The whole design is just phenomenal and just make sense. I had the honour to work a couple months with it and in my opinion it's worth the money 👍
I just watched your video yesterday on why you preferred the DeWalt and wouldn't get a Kapex... until maybe one day lol. You made the right choice. The handle is placed the way it is so you can line up your thumb-wrist-arm and pull straight down without deflecting the blade... just one of the many ways they make it by far the most accurate saw on the market. I use mine in a shop almost exclusively but it's the only miter saw available that can replace tablesaw sleds for crosscutting and mitering, etc. Nothing else is even close to as accurate. As far as the stand issues you had in the other video; first, read the manual. Setting up the folding stand is a piece of cake if you know where you're supposed to place your foot on the bottom of the stand so it doesn't fall over. If you want to take the saw off the stand, it has quick releases that make it just as easy to remove as removing the DeWalt from its stand. The outfeed tables may be a little time consuming to setup on a new unlevel surface each day, but the pro far outweighs the con in that you have about 8 feet either direction of support and extremely accurate flip stops. Again, accuracy. For a trim carpenter, I don't know how you could live with anything else but the Kapex.
I love my Makita 18Vx2 12" mitre saw. The laser and accuracy are great. I primarily use it for aluminium with a 120 tooth blade. The dust extraction could be better. The attachment point for the vacuum should be on the lower portion.
I’m on my second Kapex saw, the first one developed a small issue after 6 years of work, it was sent in for repairs and Festool replaced it with a brand new saw, free of charge. This one has been flogged every day for 9 years, and still cuts as accurately as the day it was unboxed, they are truly awesome pieces of gear. Buy the wheel assembly and the wings too, it makes a great tool even better.
Oh no, i remember that episode where you tested the saw, and said it was a no go for you, mainly because of the handle/trigger position. I'll stick to my dewalt for now and let you show us the the kapex in action for a few months first. Love the vids! -From Canada
We just bought our first festool vac and orbital for work as painters OMG why didn’t i have this in the first place no dust and it cuts work down by half. Worth it!!!
Just bought me a new Makita after doubting between a DeWalt and the Makita but I have to say that mitres are really accurate straight out of the box. Festool wasn't an option due to the price, but I really doubt if it would be more accurate.. Anyhow, enjoy!!
a few years ago we were doing same size skirting on 400 apartments in a tower, one of hte guys in our team was SO disliked (he put it on himself, long story) that he went and bought a Kapex 120 to fit in and let EVERYONE use it as their own drop saw to do this skirting, all 8 of us took turns to use this saw. Anyway we treated the saw well because ..well its a kapex, and it ripped through all that skirting no problems, it was accurate time and time again on bevels and compound bevels. the only thing that went out of line was the laser.. it was dropped, it was shoved, it fell of the trolley, it was flung around by the handle ( expected collateral damage from 8 Carpenters) and as i said, it still was stiff and accurate. That was light material, Considering i build External Hardwood Stairs, i will stick to my 10inch dewalt, but i agree with Scott, its not very accurate, the bevel adjustment is horrendous. Since Scott does alot of woodwork, i think the kapex was worth it, in the long run .but i think other drops saws come close for GENRAL carpentry (as long as you don't use them externally). The dewalt is definitely a bare bone framing/external saw.
I had similar problems with my Dewalt miter saws. Both 10” and 12” models, they could only be calibrated to be accurate to one thing at a time, and were sloppy if I was doing anything else. Similar weird things if I had to do any compound mitering, layering inaccuracies and neither of my saws had any cracks in their casings or anything. I now have two Makitas, a 12” slider and a 6.5”. Haven’t had any accuracy issues since. Very happy with them.
Handle/trigger is a big issue for me with the kapex. Ended up retiring my 15 year old 708 for the 780 cordless a few weeks ago Great saw. Wouldn't know it was battery just from using it.
I've heard it refered to as a "chop saw" or "mitre saw" never hear "drop saw" before. Neat to hear the different name people have for common tools across the pond.

Hi Scott, in regards to the inconsistent accuracy on your saw. I had the same problem on an Elu 216mm mitre saw, where I’d zero the stops but it would lose that once moved. It turned out to be the hole in the base which the head pivoted on, it had worn so much it was supporting the shaft properly. I had the hole drilled out and fitted with a bronze bushing to the correct size by an engineering shop and since then it’s been unbelievably accurate. Check it out on yours, might be the problem?
Yep, that crack would put it out on a bevel cut, for sure. Repairable, but not a cheap fix. On that note: wait until you have to fix the Kapex! Make sure you register for the extended warranty.
I’ve had 2 780’s, the first I think was dropped by previous owner. But the second was much newer and still seems to be a little off. Like the fence is at a 178-179 degree instead of 180. It really bugs me but I get a great deal in it.
I have three different mitre saw and I need (want) the kapex. Definitely the quality of the Festol is just outstanding. Congratulations on your purchase.
I have the 10-inch DeWalt and after I re-calibrated the mitre (using the 5-cut method), it cuts extremely accurate on the mitre. But if I tilt the blade on the bevel, then suddenly it's mitering is slightly off and won't cut perfectly square. There must be a fault in the way the tilt mechanism in designed, because online I've seen several other users complain of that problem also.
You never have to feel the need to justify buying a new tool in my opinion. I purchased a makita coffee maker!!! I regard that as a very important and needed tool 😆....
Bought my Kapex about 6 months ago and I haven't regretted it one bit. It is pricey theres no denying, but when its really performing you forget all about that! Enjoy it Scott!

I have gotten into the matabo hpt line and just today purchased the 36v miter saw! I have the circular saw 36v and if the miter saw is as good as it I will be pleased. I'm soon going to get the matching 36v table saw.
I hate the drop handle on the Kapex. Feels unnatural every time I went to make a cut. I suppose you can get used to it. I'll stick with my Dewalt DHS780 for now. Thanks for sharing Scott!
I had the same thought, never would i ever buy a mitre saw that overprized.... just happends that I ordered mine yesterday :D (although only the KS60) Shout out from Denmark, really enjoying your videos!
Ks60 is mafell. Different sort of kit. I do like the mafell line up, but Festool nailed it with the Kapex. Too bad it cost 5x what my current yellow saw cost.
I have a 12" Bosch mitre in the shop, and aboslutely detest bringing it anywhere because of it's size and weight... the KS60 is replacing a small 10 year old saw in my van, also Bosch. But the accuracy on the big saw just isn't good enough either.
@@mitchellkasdin1899 KS 60 is the small Kapex with a 8-1/2" or 216 mm blade. I own one, it is a great saw. The Mafell you are referring to is probably the KSS 60 and you're right, that's a different sort of kit.
@@oneillcfc7921 My old, all metal, extremely heavy, 10” delta chop saw is 30+ years old. Even with a new freud blade the cuts are only so-so, bearing and arbor wear. The newer ones are lighter, cut larger pieces and more accurately.
@@huejanus5505 but with that repaired it would go another 30. Just wear and tear. I own the new cordless double battery saw by dewalt. But they dont make them to last just like they used to
I think you'll be happy with it. I had the Makita ls1019 and it had the exact same problem you describe with the DeWalt. Out of square on bevels. (Tipped head) I now have the both DeWalt and kapex!
I’ve had the same issue for the last 12 years with my Dewalt drops saw which is the same model. I’ve learnt to work around it. As always, great episode barn. 💪🏽
Yeah, now of course in a couple of weeks you'll be cutting a large piece of timber and the cutoff will swing up and crack the Kapex... like the DeWalt. It's just the way.
I’ve never had great accuracy from my dewalt sliders or chop saws. Any miter saw actually isn’t great. Big base like that I use my cabinet saw. But I’m cutting at my shop. Definitely the solution to airtight joints. But you still need to calibrate the miter gauge for the operation. Just wish you could do it with miter saw with good results. My kapex now maybe can do it but still not sure how well. I just guy the kapex. Big difference from dewalt 780.
The Kapex is the best - finally bought one this year and wow - wish I’d bought one years ago - you need the stand and wings too though to fully utilise its features Yes it’s expensive - but if you want accuracy, dust extraction and easily repeatable cuts then nothing else will do imo
One day I'd like to try out a Kapex in my shop but that price tag is a hard pill to swallow. I just got a Metabo cordless 10in slider a few weeks ago. It's not the greatest saw in the world but I've been pretty impressed. The biggest bonus is obviously not needing to have an outlet and having just as much power. I'm typically working at the same stage as final electrical work is being taken care of and walking over to make a cut and finding out my saw doesn't have power is a pain. Plus this saw is noticeably lighter and easier to pack in and out than the 12" Milwaukee or Dewalt I'm used to dragging around.
G, day Scott and team. I once had a drop saw which would jam the small offcut between the blade and fence. I notice the manufacturers are opening up.🤨💯
I'm so excited, it's like i bought the Festool Kepex. The good part is, I didn't have to mortgage my home to buy it. Good luck Scotty, it's a spanka. (Brand new).
Bought a Makita when I was installing my cherry kitchen cabinets and then tall baseboard in house. Couldn't justify to myself at the time the price of the Kapex being twice what I paid. Two years later and so much frustration with using the Makita i bought the Kapex. No comparison for me. Have the Makita to a friend. The difference between a Honda and a Porsche. Both get the job done one is just put together with more precision. Much better dust collection. Keep up the great work. Love to see someone who cares about the end product and works with others with respect.
I don't get everyone's obsession with festool. I love new tools, I feel more in a candy store walking down the isle checking out the new cordless stuff from the other manufacturers. I've used festool, they are ok, they aren't that comfortable for me and then you see the price and I always just sit there and ask why? Cheap housings, nothing spacial on the inside to warrant being triple the price of a contractor grade tool. I went to buy the domino the other day knew it was going to be rough. 1500 for the domino and then you have to buy the kit for it to get the cutters and some dominoes, all for only 2 grand. I sat there and thought about it for a bit, then I figured I'd probably want a vacuum and then I just walked out. Walking through that warehouse was just stale, even if I did love the tool brand. To me I think it's all marketing, each in their own systainer, each one put up on a pedestal.
One of the things i look at when critiquing a slide saw is the lateral deflection of the mechanism. If you grab the handle and move it side to side you will see the slop. All saws have a little, some are really bad. As a blade gets dull it will drift out of square during the cut especially with excessive play in the saw. Larger blade saws always have more play because the blade has more flex and more mechanical advantage against the mechanism. I think the sweet spot is 10”, good capacity will less flex. The Kapex has acceptable amount of play, but more than it should considering its price. Some Makitas and Dewalts were horrible while others were ok. My older 10”Hitachi has the least of any saw i have tried. So despite the lack of modern features i will keep it going. Most saws have tension screws for the slide bars to tighten them up. The pivot might need adjusting as well. The latest Makita 12” i looked at was really bad, hopefully it just needed tuning. No way it would have cut hardwoods on a bevel without badly walking.
I've got the same issue with my dewalt mitre saw, cuts lovely and square on a normal cut but if I make a bevel cut it doesn't stay square. I got over it with moving the bed to a couple of degrees off from 90 while I done a bit of research. It's only started doing this recently and when i googled it i found another person mention it on a forum, since the saw is a good few years old i decided to get a bosch one for a change. Now that I've seen this video I'm glad i moved away from dewalt as that's 3 people i know who have had the same issue, hopefully the bosch will last me for the next 11 years as I'll be retired by then
Congrats on new saw. Festool is nice, just have a hard time getting used to the handle on it. Also, the Festool TID18 Impact Driver is a pretty nice tool, but I’m more into Milwaukee & other brands, so haven’t bought it. Did get to test it out, & was liking it (the one you saw at the shop, believe is what that model was). Cheers✌🏼
My kapex gave up the ghost 2 months ago. After 12 years of pushing it hard it owes me nothing. On bevel cuts it is in a league of its own. Currently have the dewalt 780, good saw but before the year is out will be visiting my local festool store. Appreciate your videos and enjoy your saw. Cheers
I have many Festool power tools and you find that even though they monopolize the top of the market there is still room for improvement and space for another high end power tool manufacturer/competitor.
@@kizzjd9578 yeah they make some excellent tools. I’m thinking that there is still room for improvement. There would be a market there also. For example the Festool kapex. Here in the UK it sells for £1200.00. For a machine which gives daily use for say 5 years it’s brilliant value. £5 a week. £1 a day. What kind of machine could you bring to the market with a retail value of £2000 - £3000.?
Whats the Bosch one like? Heard good things about it.. has the folding arm instead of sliders. Only bad thing ive heard is that its quite bulky and heavy to move around..
Mike is the man! how did you get a deal on the kapex 120? I thought festool prices were set by festool and dont do discounts on their products. Is it different in New Zealand?
Its tough laying down money on Festool due to the cost of the tool. But my shop is full of Festool because of the quality and the long-term use is exceptional. The Kapex might be next on the list for me as well.
You need to get those sortainers with clear lids Scott. They are great, I have many. I always buy Makita bare tools and buy a Festool Systainer for them :D, they're just better when you stack them.
@@ieatporridge8975 i used the festool impact and combi drill loads putting in kitchens but compared to my everyday dewalt drill I think it has alot more power but we all have different options and festool is a more superior brand then dewalt and makita
@@ieatporridge8975 ye I bought one for there for one of my lads that work for me they said it doesn't have as much power as the dewalt or makita impact and they rather to use the dewalt over it and same with the combined drill they don't have as power and the dewalt is alot better value
using the 305mm dewalt sliding compound i always found the radius of the blade is to big as well and cutting any skirting over 140mm on a 45 even with a new blade it would start to bend, so i figured on getting a KAPEX but the smaller blade saw. Unfortunately i think they only have the big saw with a laser guide and not the small diameter blade saw with a laser guide
Interesting, informative and relaxing to watch your videos. I find a lot of American and Canadian construction videos are more directed towards the person and not the work. Little on the arrogant side
Tools done come much better than Festool, like it or not, It's just a matter of getting used to how much they cost, I have started bought the Midi dust extractor, WOW sanded (Makita 125mm) an entire room 4mts x 4 mtrs x 2.8 mtrs, left my phone out (normally hidden away) just the merest of dust on it, just ordered the TS55, I just wish they done a smaller router and the Rotex!!! wow but £690!!

Every mitre saw eventually gets to that ‘rough framing only’ stage.
as just a hobbyist, I ask why is that? just wear and tear over time?
Only if your ruffus rough cut.. and dont look after it. I know a guy who had a makita mitre saw for 20 years
@@oneillcfc7921 My old, all metal, extremely heavy, 10” delta chop saw is 30+ years old.
But they dont make them to last just like they used to
Lol true story
I think you'll be happy with it. I had the Makita ls1019 and it had the exact same problem you describe with the DeWalt. Out of square on bevels. (Tipped head) I now have the both DeWalt and kapex!
Nothing like a great excuse onsite to buy a new tool. Makes me happy also
I’ve had the same issue for the last 12 years with my Dewalt drops saw which is the same model. I’ve learnt to work around it. As always, great episode barn. 💪🏽
Yeah, now of course in a couple of weeks you'll be cutting a large piece of timber and the cutoff will swing up and crack the Kapex... like the DeWalt. It's just the way.
Awesome saw Scott. I have one just finish and fine work! Enjoy it sir you going to love it!
i have owned one since 2008. awesome. kick ass
Looking good mate, nearly there. Buy cheap, buy twice Scott, you won't regret it!!
The Kapex is the best - finally bought one this year and wow - wish I’d bought one years ago - you need the stand and wings too though to fully utilise its features
Yes it’s expensive - but if you want accuracy, dust extraction and easily repeatable cuts then nothing else will do imo
my current mitre saw does the exact same thing. set it up square, soon as i try to do a bevel cut, its no longer square
The dewalt serviced you well! I thought for sure you'd be getting a Makita drop saw!
Same. I was thinking he might go cordless with the FlexVolt or Makita. Didn’t expect the Kapex
Yeah, me too.
I thought the same. I almost bought one myself but no one in my town had one in stock so i got the cordless makita instead.
@@kizzjd9578 I'm a makita only fan but heard there mitre saws are crazy so I went and bought a milwaukee instead
Flexvolt is awesome. Just make sure you get the double bevel.
I have the same dewalt for ladt 8 years. Awesome saw, has a few inaccuracies but square bevels are tough to get on a deep board
You will love it Scott !
What model makita was it?
10” sliding compound miter. Cant remember model and gave brochure to friend with saw. Was about $500 USD at Home Depot 5 years ago.
I was sure you would buy the Makita mitre saw... You surprised me 😅
Waiting for the Kapex review 👍
A great choice... and you'll be wanting the wings next. They're "quite good" 💃
That was Festool heaven. Like a kid in a candy store.

Texas meets New Zealand. I love it!!
Damn I'd never ever paint that. The wood with that grey backdrop looks epic!
you should have bought the BOSCH GCM 12 GDL 12" DOUBLE BEVEL GLIDE PROFESSIONAL MITRE SAW
Great choice, you'll enjoy every single cut with one of those :)
Now that I've seen this video I'm glad i moved away from dewalt as that's 3 people i know who have had the same issue, hopefully the bosch will last me for the next 11 years as I'll be retired by then
I'm curious to find out whether you like the vertical handle compared to the horizontal of the Dewalt. Some guys say it's unnatural and uncomfortable.

haha zweihundert pages later into the manual. oh i can finally set blade tilt. fine tool man lucky of you can affort it. thanks for sharing
When it's time, it's time. And there's no time like the present.
Cheers✌🏼
Makita has the best impact driver on the market. Shits all over festool with more modes and ergonomics.
Bosch glide 12. Love mine.
Cheers
Greg Roschat my first one had an issue after 6 years and they replaced it free of charge.
I'm probably going to be doing a over view of my bosch mitre saw on my channel
Welcome to the Cameron club. Enjoy your new tool brother.
Wish DeWalt still made/sold that 10" saw in the US. Looks to me like a great saw so long as its not damaged I reckon.
I did that this year as well, it hurt but it’s a great saw
I have many Festool power tools and you find that even though they monopolize the top of the market there is still room for improvement and space for another high end power tool manufacturer/competitor.
Festool is great but lacks power..
Mafell is higher end than festool.
I have an excellent chop saw, you did convince me to purchase a good work canopy with an eave though.
I’m exactly at the same point. In doubt over buying the kapex and putting it on my Dewalt stand 😅
Whats the Bosch one like?
Heard good things about it.. has the folding arm instead of sliders.
Only bad thing ive heard is that its quite bulky and heavy to move around..
What happens if the Kapex doesn’t fit in your custom kitted out van?
Very good choice ! Gold standard
Hold on a god damned minute. Were they rescuing blow-up whales?
Practicing removal of American tourists from the beach post C19.
On October 17th, Reuters reported that 25 whales were stranded on New Zealand's north island and rangers were attempting to rescue them.
I instantly went to the comments to make sure I saw that right xD
Training session.

You need to get those sortainers with clear lids Scott. They are great, I have many. I always buy Makita bare tools and buy a Festool Systainer for them :D, they're just better when you stack them.
Ye I do the same and festool make good mitre saws vacuums tracks away and stuff but there drills aren't near as good as dewalt or makita
@@orran8281 the festool 18v drill is miles better than the makita and milwaukee drills from my experience
@@ieatporridge8975 i used the festool impact and combi drill loads putting in kitchens but compared to my everyday dewalt drill I think it has alot more power but we all have different options and festool is a more superior brand then dewalt and makita
@@orran8281 have you tried the new festool impact? I've been looking at getting one but heard they are kind of underpowered
Good buy. Love my Kapex. Mind you - next thing you’ll want is the wings etc.
