Well, they're not really after humans. They sting when they're startled or when there's a potential threat to their life, or when they're hunting. Given how Mark was handling the scorpion it probably chilled out after a while and wasn't eager to spend the precious venom on a dude it won't even be capable of eating.

Well damn! That reaction is exactly how it was for me. Like an electric nail being instantly driven into your skin. The instantaneous nature of it is crazy… there is no ramp up period just immediate 10 out of 10 pain. I live in AZ and see them in my house somewhat frequently… unfortunate mostly bark scorpions. I guess it’s comforting to know I’ve been stung by the king of sting already lol. I always thought the bullet ant or t hawk would definitely be worse.
Just like you the pain radiated up to my knee. I was unable to put a sock on my foot for a full day and had to call out of work because I couldn’t walk on that foot. I’d say numbness lasted 2-3 days for me but the pain was there for a solid 24 hours. It kinda came in waves until it finally subsided.
Anyway thanks for doing this! Totally validates my own experience lol. Also props for having the balls to do this!!! Crazy stuff man!

This one was a ride on the ptsd train for me. My home is right next to a wash. A year ago, while I passed out on my living room couch, I woke to that feeling you have when something is crawling on you. I automatically brushed at it and was stung two times in quick succession on the hand between my thumb and pointer finger. The pain is literally one that will bring you to your knees, and it travels. I had an allergic reaction, and was brought back to life twice as well as the hospital had to give epinephrine 6 times in a 13-hour period. As luck would have it, we did catch it (bark scorpion)and bring it to the hospital with us so it could be identified. I was hospitalized for 4 days, and i didn't get the feeling back in my hand for 9 days. I now have my home sprayed constantly and use a blaclight if I need to take my fogs out to potty at night or take the trash out. You do not want to f around and find out with these guys. They do jump a small distance, and they can flatten themselves as thin as a credit card.

I grew up in Gilbert Arizona, surrounded by these. Hundreds were found on and in the property. Fortunately I never got stung but my mom did, and she said truthfully it was worse and more excruciating than childbirth. A friend got stung on his wrist and it swelled up like a baseball for a week. We used to hunt them with blacklights for fun. I absolutely cheered and clapped when this dethroned the bullet ant. I am so ecstatic, thank you Mark! A buddy of mine was stung only once and ended up in the hospital and required 4 Bags of AntiScorp anti-venom.I truly believe that everyone is different and everyone’s body handles pain differently and as far as the after effects I think some people have a severe after effects due to their bodies inability to process the venom as easily as others.

Got stung right above my left knee by one of these on vacation when I was a teen. I guess I went down to take a knee and kneeled on it. I remember it lasting somewhere in the ballpark of 12-18 hours of searing pain in my leg and joints. There was no build up, it was instant. It’s almost like the pain you feel when your leg or arm falls asleep mixed with a pinched nerve pain crossed with an intense pulsating burning. I had these burning aftershock pains for 2 or 3 days after. I’ll be doing great if that never happens to me again.

I honestly had no idea ANY scorpion could cause this much pain or lead to so many deaths. I'm astonished it dethroned the bullet ant! Wow! I will definitely be more observant and cautious during my visits to the Southwest. Thank you, Brave Wilderness, for taking such excruciatingly painful bites and stings for the BSI while also educating all of us about these fascinating, deadly creatures. You and your team get a solid, well-deserved 10/10 here on UA-cam.

Wow. Yeah, here in Arizona they're pretty feared! Kudos for taking it like a champ. That one got you pretty good. And unlike some sting vids, I assure anyone reading this, it really is that bad. It's a miserable sting.
They're also super common in homes here. They can flatten down to the width of a credit card. They climb into anything. They're often found in beds, shoes, furniture, on walls and ceilings, falling out of vents, skittering under doors, and crawling up drains. They're highly poison-resistant because they don't groom themselves. They have a wax coating that prevents liquids from getting in or out of the scorpion carapace, making poisons even less effective. They can live underwater for multiple days. They can survive being frozen and thawed out. They can go most of a year without any food. They're communal, meaning they don't eat each other unlike most scorpions.
Needless to say, fighting an infestation is like waging war against the most determined guerilla warriors imaginable. The folk wisdom here in the Valley is to hunt them outdoors every night in the summer, or at least once a week. Get a blacklight and some brake cleaning spray--it's the most effective for killing them on contact as it dissolves their wax coating and poisons them. You can also burn them with a creme brulée torch.
One of the few poisons that's actually effective against them is called cykick, find it at Bug and Weed Mart here. Mix it yourself, get a sprayer, and spray at least once a month during summer. Don't rely on pest control. Another effective (but slow) method is using Food-grade diatomaceous earth as if they were salt lines in Supernatural. A scorpion can cross the barrier and survive, but will likely eventually die after a few weeks. Also, cats are effective against indoor scorpions as long as they're not idiots, and chickens go crazy for them outdoors.
Good luck if you're living in or moving to the Phoenix Valley of the Sun, and stay un-stung!

Scientists are still researching why it's the case. There are many theories, one of which is that a layer of their skin, similar to a nail/cuticle, reacts to UV light (the hyaline layer).
It takes time for this layer to grow as scorpions don't glow when they've just shed. As for why this occurs in nature, potentially to ward off parasites.
