    Very nice tutorial! One question? What about panning? All the tracks sounded great together, but I didn't notice any of the panning knobs being moved at all from their positions in your DAW. Do the sampled recordings already include the proper panning for each instrument already in them?

    • @ProjectSAMCinematicSampling
      @ProjectSAMCinematicSampling  8 років тому +3

      +Henry Cavalier Hello Henry, the majority of our orchestral instruments are indeed pre-panned when using the ambient mics (stage/wide), in the sense that the player was seated in a typical spot on the stage. We recorded the various instruments as if recording a full orchestra setup. The close mics are typically not pre-panned, but centered.

    could you please do a tutorial in more detail? :) for example with a more detail explanation on how the harmonic where used in this piece and how the orchestration works and what's make a fantasy piece different from other music genres

    • @Edbrad

      +Andrew MRQ I disagree partly, especially when you're layering libraries recorded in different ways in different rooms and especially if you're writing "hybrid" music that;s also gong to be fighting for frequency space with synths and drums and sound design. My mixes were "muddy" until I started EQing out the mud. This typically involves cutting mid-midlow's and often boosting the high end. However if you're warning against trying to fix with processing what really needs fixing with different writing, then that;s quite right. Though the more you use samples as more sound design tools the less your advice is good. Such as, if you want to unnaturally boost the volume of an instrument playing very softly you usually have to EQ it or you'll end up with undesirable frequencies also being boosted. As for mastering, if you've processed your orchestra in subtle individual ways well enough then you may well need nothing. But it always benefits from a little subtle compression at least.

    Nice work! I wish there was some brass in Lumina though. You can hear brass in some of the sounds but no playable solo or ensembles. I bought it thinking everything I needed was there. That was a lot of money. I don't regret buying Lumina but I wished I would've bought Symphobia 2 first.

    I absolutely love all those tutorials. Buying a sample library is risky - the demos might be perfectly engineered, but the actual workflow and ease of use might turn out to be pretty terrible. These videos disperse most of such doubts. One question though - is this really how this sounds out of the box? Is volume adjustment really the only mixing happening here? No per-track EQs in Logic used? No master EQ on the entire mix?

    • @ProjectSAMCinematicSampling
      @ProjectSAMCinematicSampling  6 років тому +1

      Thanks! Yes, unless specified, all we do in our tutorials mixing-wise is some volume adjustment and, now and then, some panning. We don't do any EQ-ing or mastering.

    Great video, thank you!
    I'm considering buying something like this. One thing that really concerns me about all these sample libraries is producing actual sheet music from it. How would that work? I've struggled to find anything out about this at all. I compose and arrange a choral music in my spare time and I need something I can eventually get into a piece of notation software (such as Sibelius). I'm looking for a good quality sample library which could be used as a backing track, or rearranged for a small ensemble or single accompanist. Transcribing everything from a piano roll would be a time-consuming pain.
    Apologies if the answer is obvious. I'm new to this sort of thing!

      +Samuel Licks Hi Samuel. There is no real automated way to produce sheet music from sample libraries such as the ones used in this video. A lot of our libraries include ensemble recordings, with a single sample holding a pre-recorded arrangement or orchestration. For example: cellis & basses playing in octaves or a part of the orchestra playing a looped texture of multiple notes. To translate this to sheet music you will need to remake the arrangement manually. For the majority of users the sampled part will stay in the final product. They may add live recordings, but not as exact replacements of the arranged samples. Hope this helps!

    • @HarrisonKingMusicOfficial

      Think you must be referring to the keyboard at the bottom of the instance of kontakt right? Notice how each individual instrument highlights a different set of keys, that's the playable range for that selected instrument. So play the non-highlighted notes for that instrument and there wont be any sound, and plau the highlighted notes and there will be sound! I'm guessing that's what you were asking! aha

      Harrison King Music yea i just like to play my own keys not have the software do it for you it seems by me pressig a key it will play a chord automatically i know some kotakt libraries are like that

    • @TheEcstasyOfPiano

      I'm not sure if this is still relevant to you, but I would say the music is in B minor.
      The intro starts on the note D, then adds an E to it which is a passing note to the F in the coming chord. @ 0:13 the chords are B minor to G minor. @ 0:20 with the horns, it's D major to F# minor (this repeats one more time). And then the piece ends on a B major chord (this technique is called the Picardy Third, when a piece of music in a minor key ends with the major version of the chord instead).
      Using roman numeral analysis, the progression (after the intro) would be:
      i → ♭vi → [III → v]x2 → I (lowercase is minor, and uppercase is major)
