    Forgot to mention in my other comment that it is good to see the White Ewe Lamb slowly starting to stand and gain strength.

      I wrote a reply to this, but don't see it appear for some reason. But yes, it's great to see her recover so much. It went slowly, but then she was in a very bad way. So bad, that I really didn't think she was going to make it...

      Perhaps it was the thumbnail change? We're still trying things out and thought we'd go for the more natural look from now on instead of adding writing to it... What do you think?

      I'm not sure why I didn't see it but I don't think it was because of the thumbnail. I think I might have been a little overloaded with notifications lol, that time of year. I liked the thumbnail picture.👍❤️

    Hi Vince and family. The snow is so beautiful on video but it must be challenging dealing with the combination of snow and cold.
    With the cold temperatures do you have a problem with your eggs freezing if not collected fast enough? I would imagine with as cold as it is it's challenging to keep them from freezing.
    Must say that Amber is smart to put her sled behind her Wheelbarrow to collect extra wood. Glad that you include those clips on your videos.
    Your Snowblower sure gets put to good use to clean your current home and it looks like you drive to your other home to clear the driveway.
    You must speak both Swedish and English in your home. I was impressed that Amber knew the word Spatula at such a young age. It is great that your wife lets her help so much when making muffins.
    Look forward to seeing more of your new Drone in future videos when the weather is more accommodating to fly it.
    Vince, best wishes to you and your beautiful family as we close out 2024 and begin 2025.

      Thank you for the wonderful message!
      I don't mind the cold actually. Now that I really have the right clothes to work outside, it's no problem. The hardest thing to keep warm is your hands, so if it's a fiddly job that requires taking off your gloves, like working with bolts and nuts, or screws, then it's no fun. But for the snow blowing I have the right outfits and actually get too warm a lot of the time!
      I asked Caroline when rewatching that video of Amber taking that sledge if she had suggested that to her, but she did it of her own accord, so I was very impressed as well! And she keeps surprising me with words such as Spatula. The other day I said I had to work in the barn and she asked "with the mitre saw?" I was taken aback with how perfectly she said it.
      I speak Dutch to Amber as much as I can (as I'm from Holland) and Caroline speaks English with her (she's from Scotland) and then at her pre-school she speaks Swedish, so she's learning 3 languages already. Together at home we speak English, so that's her strongest language at the moment.
      Yeah, that wind gust almost took the camera down that was on a tripod. I only saw that when I replayed the footage. It's a stormy week. Good for the wind turbine, bad for the drone.
      Best wishes from all of us and hope you have a great start to 2025!

      I forgot to answer your question about the eggs freezing. Luckily enough we have some hens that like to sit on them a bit longer and keep them warm, so usually we don't have to rush and check every 30min for eggs. We only go in at the end of the morning and at the end of the afternoon and we rarely get frozen ones. We've only had 2 burst ones from frost since they started laying again 2 weeks ago.

      I'm happy you noticed it, cause I wasn't sure if it would across on video! The snow insulates so much, that if there are no people or animals around and there's no wind then you hear absolutely nothing. It's a truly amazing thing to experience!

    Hi Vince, glad to see the way you backed your pickup to the Snowmobile trailer that you probably have a backup camera? They are such a great invention for tasks like that.
    I thought it interesting that your Snowblower is made by Honda. I didn't realize that Honda products are sold in Sweden in the major cities. Honda is a good name here in the USA so glad you have a dependable blower to help to fight the large amount of snow you get in Northern Sweden.
    If you don't mind me asking what is the story behind the nice Red Steel Gas Can that you have? It must have been made awhile back as most of them are now made out of Plastic and are just not that durable as the old days.
    Best wishes as you enter 2025 for your family and all the creatures on your Homestead.

    • @northernhomestead2024
      @northernhomestead2024  2 дні тому

      Indeed those backup cameras are very handy. Especially up north where you're rear windows are covered in snow 6 months of the year and the other half it's mostly covered in dirt!
      I have a friend who swears by honda for most of his machines and so far he's not been wrong. This snowblower certainly gets through huge amounts of snow without too much trouble.
      The red barrel was here already when we bought the place. There was another one that I immediately started hacking at with my inexperience, in order to make a contraption that makes pine tar. I messed it up and was left with something that I can hopefully still use for another project, like making charcoal. But this was before finding out how rare these things are these days and so I'll be careful with deciding on what to do with the red one. Most likely it will be used to make pine tar with, but can't make any big mistakes when making it. So far I haven't found any businesses that are willing to part with their old oil barrels as they are so durable as you mentioned.
      Best wishes to you too and hope you'll be doing something nice for your new years eve! We'll be going to bed early (right about now actually) and catching up on some much needed sleep.

      @@benburns5995 Caroline just made me aware that you were talking about the red jerry cans that I used to fill up the snowblower with! Sorry for that misunderstanding. There were actually about 6 left by the previous owner. These are not as rare here as we can still buy them at our local petrol station. We had also bought a plastic jerry can, but that actually start leaking petrol after one winter, so not durable at all!
      The metal ones are a little pricey though, so to find 6 left behind was a very pleasant surprise! 😁

      @@northernhomestead2024 Hi Vince, no need to apologize and thank Caroline for pointing that out to you. I did notice the large Red Drum as well on video. Here in the USA we refer to those as 55 Gallon Drums.

      I don't know how old these are that we have, but some of them looked pretty rusty, so we gave them a good clean on the inside and will probably give them a coat of paint to give them "new life" and hopefully pass them on to the next generations.

    Of course, I checked on g. maps the village you went with your snowfighting machine. Been several times to Sweden but never this north.
    So much snow, huge frost, and it amazes me that you wear T-shirts at home. It must be 40 C difference between inside and outside temperature.
    All in all great video, best regards 😊 thank you guys 🌲

    • @northernhomestead2024
      @northernhomestead2024  6 днів тому +2

      Yes, we are quite far north indeed 😁 It's certainly worth the trip!
      Since we installed that new woodstove, it just gets too warm for jumpers. And you're right, it's just above 20 C inside, so some days it's more than 40 C difference! Last year we had a bit of fun and cranked up the fireplace to make it 30 degrees inside when it was 30 degrees outside 😄
      So happy you enjoyed the video! Best regards from the family ☺

    Beautiful scenes! It must be nice to cut down your own Christmas tree right from your yard. Hardly any pine trees grow around in my area of the United States because the deer eat them all. That’s a lot of snow!
    Question: What is the temperature in your house when you wake up in the morning after the wood stove burns down overnight?

    • @northernhomestead2024
      @northernhomestead2024  5 днів тому +1

      It feels very special cutting down our own tree for Christmas. Here the elk like to eat certain types of pines, which can be a nuisance for newly planted pine forests.
      On very cold days we can wake up to about 12C (53F), which I think was worse last winter when we didn't have the kitchen woodstove yet. We do also have the heatpump which we'd leave on during the night last season to keep a level temperature, but this year we're really trying to save energy wherever we can and see how prepared we are for off-grid living.
