I think thousands of retired cops would debate you on if .38 special is a “ potent” round ! It was run as standard issue for a long time! When I became a cop in 91 they were just switching over to the semi autos but .38 special can be a very effective round!

Taurus guns get better with age. They are rough new but after a few hundred dry fires and another few hundred rounds it will be as good as any high dollar revolver. 1000 rds and that little pistol will run like a champ!

None of the problems you described were present with the Taurus 856 Ultra Lite I purchased in November 2019. The only thing about this gun I don't like is the grip. And Taurus has discontinued the wood grips from their catalog. Also, slamming the cylinder shut with a flick of your wrist will damage the crane.

I bought two, always wanted a .38 and couldn't beat the price. The trigger and feel of the gun felt better than the SW. Overall I liked Colt the best, but didn't like the release for the cylinder. Kimber has the best release for the cylinder to me. But for me with the two Taurus models I got: One was the Stainless Ultra-Lite and the other was the heavier SS model. Paid $239 for ultra-lite and $223 for regular model. With the rebate and transfer fee that would be $219 and $203 in the end. The ones in the store had a nice trigger pull, I dry fired them probably 200 times and still tough. Purchased the Wolff spring kit to try and get a lighter pull. Nice revolvers to me for the money!

I had to send the piece of shit to FL under the "lifetime warranty" but for those who are tempted to get a Taurus POS due to price, save yourself a hassle and get something better. I wish there are known reliable budget revolvers out there that isn't POS Taurus. Potential buyers be warned!
