As a young drummer, I use to love it when my parents would let me stay up to see Buddy on the Carson show in the late 70's and 80's. Thank you for putting these videos up on UA-cam.
Conte Candoli was probably Buddy's 2nd biggest fan, behind Doc, in the band. I enjoy seeing his face light up when Buddy solos. He's always talking to his fellow trumpeters, pointing out Buddy's superb technique.
Great to see these Carson broadcasts Never saw him ride the crash The twin toms made no sense And that bass drum was tuned so tight,it was higher pitched than the toms!
That kit was probably drums du jour, so Buddy comes out from backstage and it's a 5-pc with 2 in the air and that's what he got. The kick needed a felt damper across the front head, it was ringing badly. It sounded OK through the band but during solo the ringing sounded very bad. And because BR can play like that on poorly configured gear (with an injured foot) then everybody thinks us mortal drummers should do the same.
Lol. Most of these sets were just sent over from the Pro Drum Shop when he was going to appear. They probably didn’t do much with them aside from setting them up
It is a Ludwig set. Buddy endorsed Ludwig for a number of years but Slingerland was what he played for most of his career. But when guys like him make tv appearances they use what ever is provided on the set (tv set not drum set). Being that Ed Shaugnessy (The Tonight Show Drummer) also endorsed Ludwig I'm sure they renter a Ludwig kit wether Buddy was endorsing Slingerland or Ludwig at the time.
When I used to watch The Tonight Show Shauhnessy always had a white Ludwig kit but I'm sure just like most pro drummers that have been around the block he had endorsed other drum companies. I never even mentioned Shuahnessy endorsing Pearl.
@@billroberts7038 It certainly was out of his comfort zone, but then he never plays double tom anyway, which affords a closer, more comfortable position for the ride cymbal.
well i probably play that video 10 times a day and i’m 62 almost 63 now and i saw him play for the first time when i was 11 and i love his playing and i just think he was truly great.
@@billroberts7038 I also saw him play many times live. The last time was at Grendel's Lair in Philadelphia, PA in December, 1986. I have the cassette and CD from that last evening of a two nighter.
nice. i’d like to hear that. i played on a radio king kit in 70 & 71. it was blue sparkle. me and my friends had a lot of fun trying to be musicians. lol
The bass drum sounds like a tenor drum in a marching band. Ed Shaughnessy should be the one to tune it for him. Obviously who ever set it up doesn't know Jack or Jill.
The drum set was a rental from a local shop The Tonight Show had an arrangement with. Sometimes they don't sound too bad, often they are wide open but sometimes they have ductape all over the heads, sometimes they are just horrible. (Though they always had the snare drum tilted at Buddy's angle). It was hit or miss, Buddy sat down and played them all cold and never faltered. So because a once in a lifetime talent like Buddy always played fabulously on random lousy gear, there is a whole world of ignoramuses who piously preach that every other drummer on Earth should also play fabulously on whatever cylindrical furniture is placed in front of them for the sake of everybody else's convenience. Because Buddy blah blah.

And almost dropped stick at the end. Still caught it and finished. Wow. He was the Best!
Your channel is a true treasure trove. When you think you’ve seen it all, drumuitar provides with a new buddy video
I agree, Buddy was the greatest drummer and Johnny was the greatest late night host. Put them together and it was pure magic.

Always the best , thanks for posting.
The world's greatest drummer ever.
One of the rare times he used a crash cymbal as his ride.
Thanks for posting.

onemoremisfit - No way. I love the open sounding drums including the bass drum.
I've noticed in most of these, they gave him a set with TWO mounted toms.
Great post thanks !!
I guess that crash got it enough for that night 🤣!
What chart it is please ?
Thanks for BUDDY VIDEO! YA GOTEM WITH GRANDSON ERIC????PLAYING?
0:56 🥁
Buddy was playing through an ailing heart. Pretty tough guy.
Did they not make tuning keys back in those days??
Lol. Most of these sets were just sent over from the Pro Drum Shop when he was going to appear. They probably didn’t do much with them aside from setting them up
Buddy played his butt off as usual. Hard to hear other drummers after him.
Very possibly those are Johnny's drums
What the chart name please !
Great post thanks )))
I notice buddy got one down vote on this piece-there is one dumb person out there!
What’s the name of this chart?
The drums don't look like the usual Ludwig set he usually played. I don't recognize the drums.
jeff wetmore 99.9% of the time, the drums on Carson were rentals from Pro Drum Shop.
Drumuitar I wondered where they came from. Must have been out of Ludwig sets that day, lol.

@@spercoco do you remember what brand drums Schauhnessy played b4 Pearl?

I came for Loni
So did a lot of other guys. Ba dum dum 🥁
Odd seeing him use the crash as a ride.
if you look at the ride it was down or tilted down to low and he had to hurry it up.

The entire drum set sounds like shit. Fortunately, Buddy could play on cardboard boxes and sound great.
They might be Johnny's drums

G unloced
Drums always un tuned. Awful. BR always sounds great....he overcomes the poorly tuned drums.
The bass drum sounded like crap...who the heck tuned it? lol
Lil Elmo and The Cosmos - I like the open sound of the bass drum. It is better than a dull thud.
