Some ran for 10K and other fresh legs joined in for another 10K etc...he was the only one out of them all that ran the entire marathon. Running is a strategy. I found out the hard way when I ran a half marathon. I sprinted out with the pacesetters and a few kms later mangusho (remember him?) passed me like a motorbike..at the end of the day I finished a respectable 77th out of thousands and the first lady was 78th....my motivation not to be beat by a woman lol.

Like other said, the organiser will paid for them to set the pace. The pacer can actually finish the race themselve if they like. But for this specific event, it would be useless because the pacer in this event didn't run full marathorn. The pacer rotate each other after few KM.
