    Thank you so much for sharing your expertice. I am new to this, but as an artist, I found that my sculpting tools are very helpful with making the spirals lay down. You use a manicure tool, but sculting tools have lots of different angles and metal ballpoints that get into the creases well.

      I just have a one-step tulip tie dye kit so I'm shortening the processing time. Hopefully that doesn't effect the outcome badly

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  3 роки тому

      that is awesome, I am glad to be of help to you... Hopefully you had some great results!! But, just in case they were light in color, it could be from shortening the processing (Batching) time .... I leave mine for a minimum of 24 hours with a temp of 70F ... BUT, I prefer to leave mine for 48 hours with some heat added.
      As for the Tulip Kits, one other thing that will help improve the colors is to mix the dyes right before you use them as the soda ash is mixed in the dye powder, so the dyes are active as soon as water is added.
      Also, adding less water will make the colors a bit darker, and doing a soda ash soak even though it does not call for it will help your colors.
      Peace Love Light & Laughter to you ~ Carl

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  4 роки тому +5

      Are you wanting to place an order for one?? if so, then you can message me here: m.me/CarlMrTieDye
      Or if you are wanting to know how, then I would tie it up the same way as this one... and then for your colors... you just need to mix them very light to get the pastel.... if you already have dyes mixed up at full strength, then yo can mix your pastel dyes from them .... just fill a bottle about 3/4 full of water and add the rest with your dye, do this for each color ..... I do not have exact measurements for this, I just mix on the fly ...
      or if you are mixing the pastel colors directly from powders, I would use about 1/4 the amount of dye (once again, this is a starting point, not an exact, as I do not do pastels very often)

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  3 роки тому

      it is more work due to the thicker fabric, but yes it works, I have only done one hoodie and one Carhart Coat... both started out black and then I removed color, then I rinsed and washed them and then tied agin and then added color.....
      if you use Out or Rit to remove color, you can also tie with sinew, and remove color, rinse really well and then soak and dye ... here is my Black Tees playlist where I show how I use Out, Rit, Bleach and Decolourant :ua-cam.com/play/PLMEtBqB2BzuobKZarvDxELVgQCO25elQr.html

I just use the shake method when mixing my dyes with water... do I need to mix the darker dyes differently? They will either put little dots on the shirt or they will clog up the hole and I'll have to take if off and put it in water to clear up the hole then continue dying!

      I paste my dye up by adding just a little water in a mixing cup and mashing it up with a plastic spoon before adding the rest of the water. Also colors with red or fuchsia are super difficult to dissolve and you can invest in a cheap immersion blender to mix them. Mr Tie Dye has an awesome video on dye mixing if you go back through his videos. He uses an immersion blender and it saves a lot of time.

      Thank you ... and yes, I do a presoak in soda ash with my cotton tees/hoodies and then I spin out the excess so the tee is just barely damp when I fold it and when I dye it... the soda sh is what activate the Procion Dyes I use. and then after I dye it, I place it in a tub with a lid to keep it wet while it batches... I leave mine to sit for 48 hours and I stack the tubs next to a heater vent so they get some heat while they batch... this does help make the colors darker or brighter ... a good minimum time is 24 hours at a minimum temp of 70F. ..... and I see you found my Beginner's Video, I have a playlist with several videos to help get you started : ua-cam.com/play/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo.html

    What would happen if you soak a shirt in soda ash but you're just using like a standard store tie-dye kit, like tulip or something. Instead of those hardcore Dharma ones. Will it even do anything?

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  3 роки тому +1

      The Soda ash will help some of the kits.... Tulip is one of them ... I think they are made from Procion dye and have soda sh in with the dye powder, but probably not enough .... so when you pre soak tees in soda ash, you will get better colors from some of these one step kits .... also, a longer batch time will help.... I leave mine for 48 hours with added heat .... I batch mine in tubs with lids so they stay wet, but the heat builds as I set them in the sun or stack next to a heater vent : ua-cam.com/video/SvhwNQbhZJA/v-deo.html

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  3 роки тому

      After I dye the hoodie, I put it in a tub with a lid so it stays wet, if it dries out, then the dye stops bonding... so in a tub with a lid, or some people cover with plastic or put in a plastic bag. here is how I do mine : ua-cam.com/video/SvhwNQbhZJA/v-deo.html
      And, I use fiber reactive Procion dyes, after mixing with water, they are good for 2-3 weeks, and even longer if you store in a fridge.... but after the 2-3 weeks, they will still work, the just come out lighter.... so I write the date on my bottles when I mix the dye ... then at the 2-3 week mark, I will add another scoop of dye and blend again.... but I try to use up the dye this time round

    How would one add a logo to this without the color? I’m trying to add a logo to the left breast area and then tye dye the hoodie. Suggestions?

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  2 роки тому

      what kind of logo?? is it screen print? Dye? Fabric Paint?? ........ for me, when I am going to add a logo or something, I prefer to tie-dye it first and then add it.... screen prints and fabric paint will look much fresher if added at the end of the process, otherwise, the logo will need to go through a few washes after the tie-dyeing .... and then is can look a bit worn
      if you are doing a dye painting of your logo and it is not going to be black, then you can tie off an area for you logo, bag it and leave it white.... then do you tie-dye, batch, wash, and then prep your white spot by either dunking in soda ash or spraying it... then dye you logo .....
      those are the ways I Would do it.... but if I misunderstood your question, or you have more details for me, you can start a new question rather than reply as I do not see the replies readily .... just refer to this question so I can be on the same page again 😉✌🏻

    You said the front spiral will look better than the back. Is that because it’s a thick hoodie or is that true for all shirts? I was told I need 100% cotton. I have lots of tie dye from Thailand Bali but it’s not %100 because it’s stretchy. How do they dye those types of garments? My friend told me she wanted to tie dye a hoodie and this is perfect. Thanks for your knowledge 🙏🏽

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  2 роки тому +1

      I think the front looks better because I put that side down when I twisted it, so the pleats line up nicely on the front ... and this hoodie is a Hanes Ultimate Cotton Hoodie, it is 90/10 cotton/poly ... and it dyed up great.... when I look for items, I prefer 100% cotton when I can find it, but I like to have at least 80% cotton for the best colors.... so many fabrics will have a little bit of spandex in them and this is fine .... once you get down to a 50/50 blend, then only half of the fiber are holding dye, so it then looks a bit muted or faded... but even this is not bad, some people prefer this look .... so if you find a blend on something, do not let the number hold you back from dyeing it...
