I have a 71 boss bought it when I was 16 back in 1983.. still have the car and believe I have one of the nicest one in the country.. actually showed the car in the late 80s.. still absolutely perfect condition.. only has 7 thousand miles
The 71-2-3's are coming up nicely in value. When I drive my '72 Mach around these days it seems to attract more interest than it ever has. My son drag races and for fun I entered the Street Trophy Class one weekend and had an absolute blast. While I was staging the announcer gave a really nice introduction and description of the car. It's almost like maybe it's time has come. It ran 8.8's in the eighth.
i drove one up and down a gravel road when i was 10 years old in 1971 my friends dad owned a ford dealership and well dont leave 10 year old kids home alone in the country...
One just sold on Barrett Jackson last weekend for $253,000! I am I 72 cobra jet Mach 1 for 18,00 6 years ago. Best money I ever spent. It was my only car for a couple of years now it’s my weekend driver.
I read the comments below and it shows people are not watching the values of old cars. Any fastback mustang, even the pregnant one are way up there. have any of you seen what kind of Mustang you can get for $16,000. You don't get much.
We all did stuff like that. My Brother In Law a Marine, specail ordered a 1970 Grand Prix, Black 455 HO 4spd MANUAL with a S.O. 2.08 Posi rear. Topped out at 140 from the factory. Had 81k on it. He wanted an automatic so stupid as I was passed it up and convinced my 16 yr old brother to buy it for $350. Ran excellent as he was a Millwright. Today that car commands over $100k, as there were less than 500 made as a manual &455 HO. Fastest car I've ever driven. My Brother sold it to another kid who blew up the engine a few mo later. WE can't even talk about it we're so pissed at ourselves. Sold my 68 Black Chevelle SS 396 4spd same way. TOO Cheap!
I really do love those cars. I have a fond childhood memory of those cars. So glad I wasn’t there with a pocket full of cash. I would buy to keep! Please, finish yours and keep it for you enjoyment!
The best of this style from 71 through 73 would be the 71 Boss 351, which prices have gone through the roof. So if it's an R code 71-72 or Q code 73, these are the next best options, and if you can get the 429 and a 4 speed the better. The price will fluctuate up and down in the short term but in the long run the trajectory points up.
I just watched on Hagerty and considering the condition it's not a bad deal, I'll consider this one a condition #3 GOOD the evaluation in this condition was around 29K in the previous two years and now are around 34K so I think it was a good deal
i have had mine from high school for about 25yrs now. It has always been my dream car. Its like driving a tank and it constantly needs repair but i wouldn't want anything else.
I think it’s all in the eyes of the beholder. If that body style is your thing it’s what you’re willing to pay. Thing is these cars and nice ones are getting fewer and fewer so five years down the road it could be going for $5k more. If you want it for your own pleasure or resale will determine what you should pay. Finding the right buyer could be tough or easy. A guy who had one and is looking for one will pay more. The market is so uncertain. I myself like this body style but I like older more but older is becoming out of my price range so this wouldn’t be a bad substitute. It needs TLC so high teens is a good stopping point.
I have a baseline 302 R code Mach 1. It's really nice, kinda hard keeping the plastic junk in good shape. I don't know the values right now in 2021, but i think they should be around 20K. I'm 75 years old and thought of selling the car, but the kids want it in the family. I have shelves of 71 parts in storage as I started collection in the early 80's. Nice video !
In 1985 I purchased a nice, clean, red 1967 Mustang GT automatic, coupe for $1500.00 didn't need anything,my brother drove it with hood latch ajar and hood flew open and tore hinges, drove it without a hood for many months until it got impounded for expired tags and never went to pick it up,wish I had it now probably a $20-25k car today.
I think it's sold for way too much money especially at a dealer's auction I like that you stayed firm on your price so that gives you an ideal of what your car could be worth or maybe even more because it's the real deal
It was a little high for that car. Hood stripes were wrong as was the console. 18k was a good offer. I just sold a 72 jade black with silver stripes and a 351cj. It went to Germany. It needed work but I let it go for 13k. You can find them for anywhere between 18k for a nice car up to 100k for SCJs. Happy hunting. They are out there and they are popular
I got my 73 for $13.900 two years ago . It’s an original car no rust paint is really nice. She has a couple of scratches not bad. As far as looks she turns heads and receives a lot of compliments every time I take her out. The only reason I got it is because I had one in my early 20s . I’ve always kicked myself for getting rid of it, it turned out to be my favorite car. Forty years later I couldn’t stand it no more so I broke down and bought this one. My first one was white with black stripes and it was a Q code. This one is ivy glow with argent stripes and it’s an H code. I’m keeping it stock that’s the way I like it. As far as wheels the magnum 500s are nice but I like the beauty rings with the center hub cap better. Plus that’s the way this one was born with.
Mine too! I grew up in Texarkana Texas and in 1972 a man would pass by our house everyday a little past 5 pm. He drove a Boss 351 red with black accents. You better believe I was always outside when he passed by. Great memories
Right. The automatic kills the interest and price for most classic and muscle car enthusiasts. But, I love the color and would have the hood and wheel wells repainted. However, once you get into that much paint it might require an entire re-paint and a good paint job isn't a cheap date.
71 Mach 1s did not come with chrome front bumpers. Personally I like chrome much better. However, if we could have seen the 05 on the vin tag, that will tell you it's a real Mach1. Starting 1970 Mach's got there own id in the vin #
Some people don't like the 71-73's but I do. That was a good price if you were going to keep the car and have fun. Hopefully the person that brought it will make money on it. Something is worth only what someone is willing to pay for it so we'll see.
In the UK a decent 71/72 Mach 1 would go for about £28k and a cobra jet about £32k. Classic mustang prices are going up and up,even for a rusty one that needs work.
I've been shopping for a 65-68 Mustang for a few months now. Prices are crazy, especially for fastbacks, which is my ultimate goal. But even clean coupes are being priced at nearly $28k by the main classic car dealers. There's a dealer in CO that actually prices things appropriately, but I haven't seen them get a car I want to buy yet. But I'm keeping my eyes open.
Considering the time and money it would take you to build one of those I'd say you got a good deal. After everything was said and done it cost me $14,300 to build my 73 and that's including the price of my car. It would have been about 17,000 but I got deals on a lot of the parts. I did all the work myself too.
Your explanation confirms what I believe. In my small town, my two daughters ride their bikes and look around. They found two 71's sitting in a front yard. We went over and I talked to the owner of the cars. One is a Cleveland 4 speed car the other is a 429 scj. Even though I can do all the work to restore them, my daughter's and I just finished a 67, it isn't worth it when I can just buy a car for $20 to $30 thousand already done.
That was a good price at 17k. But at 23k not bad either. I would retail at 35k. The right buyer would pay it. If not I would hold on to it for a couple of years.
Guys, don't waste your time. Get a 2023 Mustang GT and considering what it costs to rehab an old Mustang from the 70's, you'll come out ahead. Plus the performance of the current iron will simply bury that old stuff. This frees up time to work on your game with the ladies.
I prefer the original Nothing like the 1st ones made It's like copycatters And if the world was to go on The new ones today Will never appreciate like the old ones
I had a 73 convertable with 45k actual miles, pulled the 351c 2bbl, put in a 400 with boss 351 heads. car ran 10:80's on a 200hp shot. first time I ran 10:80 the track banned me since I had no roll bar.
Love these little special clips you do. You were right with the price even though it went for more. Those Mach 1 aren’t that desirable. You should be looking out for the fox bodies right now especially the knotchbacks.
Fox bodies are ugly and will never have the appeal of these older mustangs. Yeah they're lighter but not by much. The 71- 73 models are still way lighter than the new Mustangs.
I was thinking $25K but I think in CDN dollars so I was a bit low. Even still, I know people who would pay more than that for that car......Even with the rough spots that would appeal to them because they are the type to want to work on it themselves but not from scratch.
I guessed it was worth around $25,000 retail just from watching Mecum and Barrett Jackson auctions on TV. I think the guy over paid at $23,000 if he was planning on re selling it. Beautiful car though. It has the look especially with those wheels. You probably should have gone up to $19,000, but that would not have bought it anyway. Good video.
This "71 will go for way more than a "73... 73 is an undesirable year (Ford pulled the compression back on all the engines to get everything running on 87 octane)
There was no 73 R code, 72 was the last year. So, if it is a real R code it was not original to your 73 car. The 71 on the auction site could have had an R code but not with an automatic and not with the Mach 1, the R code only came with the Boss 351 in 71.
My buddy does older car flips he paints them color the people want. Start with paint then engine then upholstery. We can do classic car 4000 dollars from scratch nothing inside. Paints like 2500 and rolling chassis and engine cheap. Just get any classic park it at shop any shop like moths to light you will sell it before it's done. Anything El Camino's, impala, Camaros, Chevelle, just make sure repop parts. Any odd ball car get it as complete as possible. Get then with no title
Hey man, love your videos. If I may make a suggestion, you should have somebody edit your videos for you. You don't do a bad job at all, but paying someone to do a really good professional and seamless edit could take your chanel to the moon because you have really good content, I just think your editing holds you back a bit. Also, I don't edit videos....I'm just saying. I wanna see you get to 1 mil+ subscribers. Keep up the great work and thanks for the good info and regular content
Seeing the Cobra Jet Mach 1 in primer sitting there collecting dust makes me sad. I've met guys who have sweet project cars like that who never finish them and stubbornly refuse to sell them at any price because "Someday, I'm gonna finish her." Then 20 years go by, the guy dies, and his family members send the car to the crusher - or sell it to some teenager for peanuts.
Huh, and theres a yellow mach one down the road from me under a cover. Just needs a good cleaning then to what it needs to get running. No rust i might add and they are just sitting on the thing...
It was over priced considering that it was a clone of a mach 1. A true 71 mach had a rubber front bumper and the hood definitely wasn't painted correctly either.
Wouldn't have paid more that $15-$16K was out when it went over that. You did the right thing, that price was way, way too high, AND the rust should throw up red flags and your car dealer spidey senses should be tingling like crazy - they will have to get +$25K when they sell it just to try and break close to even - nice car, bad deal AT A DEALERS' AUCTION, THEY PAID RETAIL +++
These 71-73 Mustangs are so misunderstood by most people... They are rarely painted or detailed correctly. Using this car as a benchmark as to what yours is worth is useless.. a lot depends on how you plan on detailing your car. Will it be concours correct, or a cobbled together facsimile like this one? Who knows? A car is worth what someone is willing to pay...
I question why anybody would bring a car like that to a dealer auction when there are so many other options for a car like that. I would have listed it on Bring A Trailer and gotten world wide exposure for it.
I understand that used cars are at a premium right now. Even classics. But? How about a follow-up? What can you do with that car at that price? Dealers are chatty lol.
I have a 71 boss bought it when I was 16 back in 1983.. still have the car and believe I have one of the nicest one in the country.. actually showed the car in the late 80s.. still absolutely perfect condition.. only has 7 thousand miles

Truth ☝
Any car is worth whatever someone will pay for it,remember there is no guarantee on auction cars, if u can take an expert with you
There are more desirable mustangs once you get into the 20k range you bid right
Both the car & video was an oldie but a goodie
I had one of those. Sold it for $1500 in 1981. Too bad the new ones don't look like this.
We all did stuff like that. My Brother In Law a Marine, specail ordered a 1970 Grand Prix, Black 455 HO 4spd MANUAL with a S.O. 2.08 Posi rear. Topped out at 140 from the factory. Had 81k on it. i have had mine from high school for about 25yrs now. It has always been my dream car. Its like driving a tank and it constantly needs repair but i wouldn't want anything else.
Those cars are starting to catch on. Try to find one in that shape for that price, won’t be easy. I would pay that for that car all day long!!
1971 Mach 1 Fastback is my favorite. Mustang made. It's only worth what the buyer wants to pay 20K or 50K
I think it’s all in the eyes of the beholder. If that body style is your thing it’s what you’re willing to pay. Q Code in 73. R code in 71-72 only. Solid lifter Clevelands.

I would liked to seen .that deal alot more rare and desirable car value will be higher also when both r complete
You mean 70?
It was a little high for that car. Hood stripes were wrong as was the console. 18k was a good offer. I just sold a 72 jade black with silver stripes and a 351cj. It went to Germany. My dad had a Mach one back in the 80’s. Crashed it into a tree after falling asleep at the wheel. Sad shit 😔
That was my dream car as a kid
I guy in my neighborhood had a new Boss 351. Sweet car.

Beautiful car
I'd say 18-19 tops. The Automatic kills it for me. It's a driver on weekends, not a collector.
Right. The automatic kills the interest and price for most classic and muscle car enthusiasts. But, I love the color and would have the hood and wheel wells repainted. However, once you get into that much paint it might require an entire re-paint and a good paint job isn't a cheap date.
To much thank you for sharing
That is a cool car . If you daily drive that . You are a total bad ass in my opinion.
Their popularity has gone up. Even gutted ones in rough shape are going for 2k these days
I think you got ALL the money for that one. Good video, thanks.

My Favorite Treat!!! Love This
The 71-73 mustangs are tanks, although the Mach 1's are classics. You can find a more desirable 65-70 fastback in great shape in the 20's.
Awesome car man!! Good 2 c u with so many more subscribers since last week 👍🏼
I think you was about right on the money, I wouldn't have gone more than that and I'm not a dealer!
That was fun to watch and get an insight on the auction process

Not a surprise. They sell for $30k perfect
Smart.... Not Rare or Original. That is why The Owner Thru Her To Auction.

It was over priced considering that it was a clone of a mach 1. A true 71 mach had a rubber front bumper and the hood definitely wasn't painted correctly either.
Would look good next to that convertible you have
Convertible SOld Already
Nice
I have a 71 mach 1, with a 351 cleveland 4br. is it supposed to have Cleveland in it?
Would have been a good buy under $18,000. Nice car, not great car. Neat to see one roll through.
Lucky Guy 👍
Was it numbers matching?
I owned a 351 cobra jet 1971
Great. No R codes in ‘73. Just Q codes as top option...
I bought a 1971 Mustang fastback cherry red in Phoenix in 1991 for $1,250. I guess times have changed...
why so cheap? they are never that cheap if a complete driver.
it was nice looking car I like it you should buy it and fix it
Real money on that car is $18-21 because it needed paint work. With repairs that car would sell for $24 to $26
Retail I don't see any this good right now below 23k. Did they go up in value last year or so?
I would have listed it on Bring A Trailer and gotten world wide exposure for it.
because it brought all the money at auction. No need to retail it
The price depends on what's it worth to you!
I’m looking for a march 1 1971 to 1973 . With or without a engine
I understand that used cars are at a premium right now. Even classics. But? How about a follow-up? What can you do with that car at that price? Dealers are chatty lol.
if bad body work and paint prep on that wheel lip -- what all else has bad work that has not shown up yet ??
