The M.I.B.'s nonchalance in tossing the non-returnable box in his trunk with so many others, the crappy boxes containing whatever was glowing and was safe to leave unattended; these details and others made this film excellent. His proffering her school friend, telling her fame wasn't what she wanted, and apparent disgust at her choice ("on the left") while yet another arrives made him sympathetic. Great job! No pentagrams or blood needed just, human frailty on full display. ouch.
I especially liked the little detail at the end where she had to fetch her soul for him. Give it to him voluntarily. And then he just idly tosses it in the trunk with all the rest.
He can't coerce her compliance. She has to choose to give up her soul.
Wow!! Another homerun! This is up there with my favorites. He did everything in his power to make her see it wasn't a good idea. I especially loved how he offered her a chance for what she said she wanted and in her shortsightedness she couldn't see the forest through the trees. This happens so much in real life. You can see it truly bothers him. Like he desperately wants to believe in the goodness of people, but keeps getting let down. I though he was the devil at first, but maybe that is his own personal hell. Excellent short.
No reason why it can't be both. Why do we assume the Devil likes being the Devil?
Erik Johnson: That is a brilliant observation. Religion teaches us that the “Devil” is pure evil who wants nothing other than to destroy humanity. But that’s not necessarily the case.
In fact, the Book of Job in the Hebrew Bible presents the Devil (Satan) as Yahweh’s (God’s) “prosecutor” or “tempter” and an ally of Yahweh.
Christianity through lore and Biblical and apocryphal texts presents the Devil (Lucifer) as an angel who rebelled against God and is thus His enemy. This leads one to conclude that the Devil is either bipolar or they are two different entities.
In neither case is it insinuated that the Devil does his job with any joy or pleasure.
He obviously is the devil, and her soul is in her box. He isn't at all good for trying her to see there are more options.. Instead his testing her loyalty... Not only her soul, he wants her all, entirely her. And as soon as he touches that box, the light in it goes off.. And there's also NO WAY BACK! As Heaven is eternal, Hell is eternal.
Learn, guys learn... There are only two.
Good and Bad.
God and Evil.
Heaven and Hell.
There are ONLY TWO.
If you don't believe or follow one, automatically you are with the other one. It's your free will what is for... Options could be zillions, but there are only 2.
It's your decision. I'm very wise, that's why I've chosen God Almighty, Omnipotent, Omnipresent, above allllllll things ever!!!
Take care.
God bless!!
Bret Territo: God and Devil are labels that are taught, but what if the qualities are actually reversed? Maybe the Devil is what we think of as good, and God is a vindictive bastard, and the purpose of religious dogma is to make us believe the opposite.
Melinda Green: That too is a fascinating scenario. If one carefully reads the Hebrew “Bible” (“Old Testament”), God doesn’t give one a warm, fuzzy feeling. He orders or allows the slaughter of countless men, women, and children. He allows Satan to torment one of His most loyal servants, Job. Famine and starvation, pestilence, slavery, disease including the worst of all diseases-hemorrhoids...just another day’s work. Throughout said writings, God is not a nice guy. To seriously consider your hypothesis doesn’t require much of a stretch of the imagination.
You strike me as an intelligent, insightful, thoughtful woman. What I enjoy most in life is intelligent conversation, and I would love to have a face-to-face conversation with you. Oh well...I’m not willing to sell my soul for a chat regardless of how intellectually stimulating it is🙂.
I don’t know why but, this is probably one of my favorites so far. Devil? Collector of souls? Angel trying to give one last chance to keep their soul/personality/heart? Homerun guys
Look at the chrome on that big ol' Plymouth !
Did you hear the way that door sounded when he closed it?
That, boys and girls is what closing a car door used to sound like on a car.
There's a great message there. It seems she turned down what she really wanted. Instead, she goes the way of so many and what a thankless job he has with all those useless souls. Good share; thank you for it.
That was wonderful.
Every subtle detail in the storytelling.
A devil not that devil, just disappointed of the choices, just tired, just doing his job.
Just another effort of the media to humanize the unhuman..the Devil. As bad as hell sub, infimous creature..
@@RLyon "The Media"? Parnoid much?
Confusing Celebrity with Love is all too common.
The story of old. The endless human condition. We can be so tragically blind, and so easily misled. Heartbreaking, but, excellently done, short.

Loved the old 8 cylinder Plymouth. Did you hear that baby?
Yeah! How things have changed.
Which one is that. I had a "66 Belvedere II.
NVM it's a fury.
The state police here were driving that body style when I was in my teens. Pretty sure it's a 1970 model.
Ding, ding, ding, 71 is the correct answer. Most likely a 383 BUT could be a 440 definitely not a 318 they didn't rumble like that.
Selling their soul to get what they want.
It would seem he had made a deal that he now regrets as well.
He's just very disappointed in each of them. They say what they want and he presents the real thing, puts it right in front of them, yet they are too blind to see it, turn it down, and sell their souls for the fake version. The one man who would have given her a world full of love was standing right in front of her and she turned it down. That dissappointed him. Perhaps 1% don't go through with it, they see the alternative, but 99% do.
Great film. Very honest, true and relatable. It stirs the conscience like a mirror.
Nice. I liked it, especially the fact that the woman, Kathleen McElfresh is Campbell Scott's wife in real life.
Thanks for the tip! I was getting this vibe of them as more intimate than the movie even called for. That explains it. I'll bet they are friends with the filmmakers and did it together during a week off other stuff.
He's in no way the devil. He obviously hates his job and is very upset that people don't see their happiness when it stares them in the face. He even tried to steer her in the right direction but it was her own fears that betrayed her. Another worn, tattered heart thrown in the back with the rest... He's a tired Cupid that recognizes free will.
Casting the Fury was perfect for this film. Well done!
Wow! Campbell Scott. Marvelous film.
Yup, That's what made me watch. I LOVE him; such a brilliant actor. :)
@@Tracy137 His Father is Gorge C. Scott.
Oh well, that goes a little way to explain his acting ability...but I'd stick my neck out and say he's even better than his late, great father. Thank you for the info tho, I honestly didn't know that. :)
Yes that is him. Son of the great George C Scott. Has the talent of his father and I hope he gets more chances at more lucrative roles.
First enjoyed his persona in 'Duma'. And read where he and Stanley Tucci got the idea for 'The Big Night' while in school together. He does so much by doing 'so little'.
This is the best short I've ever seen. I would very much like to see a continuation of this.
Try watching The Booth at the End. Has a very similar vibe to it. Had two full seasons a few years ago.
If it's the best, can't you be satifsied with it standing alone.? Successor stories are to often letdowns.
Somebody put quite a lot of thought into the locations, the cars, the clothes. Love the little touch where her friend shares the compulsive trait of having to dispose of the trash properly. Also, the Campbell Scott character having to work on his car while the other two are chatting, now THAT is realism with those classic cars. Well done indeed.
One of my favourite Dust short movies! And Campbell Scott is in makes it even better!
am i the only one... in the first minute, i wanted a beer so much, i felt thirsty AF.
That. Was. Wonderful.
I have a slightly different take on this. This man, call him a devil, a servant of a devil, or what have you, but I think he is really just representing her self conscience. She gives him a little peace of her, her hope or dreams and he is disgusted that she is too nervous to follow through to get what she wants every time. And this is why all the boxes look the same. They are all hers. The chase was too easy for her, and comes with too many commitments, so she isn't about to want it when it was right there. People are complicated like that. They want things but they don't want them when it comes right down to it sometimes or they really don't know what they want. They think they want one thing, but once they find it, it doesn't fill the void right then and there so they kick it to the curb and look for another instant fix. Adoration is certainly easier and less committal than real love. She want the easy way, but in reality, it just never works out that way. There are no shortcuts for love. It can't be given in a box. It takes work. It requires a leap of faith. Sometimes they just think they want something because they are more in love with their romanticized notions about having it than they are willing to actually work for it even when its in biting distance. If it were the devil, how would she know right where to find him and how would the devil be able to make someone she knows 'happen' to show up walking out some abandoned diner right as she arrives? That's all a little too convenient. She already knew the guy would be there at one level. The abandoned diner represents the fall from grace (or truth), the diminishment / tarnishing of her life and its dreams as represented by the poster she was enamored with (adoration, not love). The too easy an opportunity came knocking and the almost immediate walking away from the opportunity is all to familiar to her self conscience who is tired of her selling herself short on her goals and dreams in general or is tired of her repeating her name mistakes over and over wasting the time that she has left to find true love..
The next person coming could just be her next notion of what she thinks she wants coming around in this never ending cycle of want without satisfaction. When the man got in her face after she walked with other dudes phone number, she acted comfortable with him being in her personal space like that as if they were long term friends. You see the look on her face and the tone of her voice said she was lying. She knew she would never call him. It wasn't love she wanted, it was adoration, unconditional "love" that doesn't take work. And he's seen her chase that dragon just too many times. She'll never get it right. And with each lot connection, as seen when the trunk slammed, a little piece of her conscious soul needing love dies with it. But she's used to that pain. She wasn't startled by it. SHe's all too familiar with the lie herself..Or maybe it's just that she doesn't like nice guys, that's why she started pushing him away at the outset with comments about her pimples etc…. And the subtle implication at the end. She was told what he wants is what's left down the road (lots and lots of more emptiness and unfulfilled life purpose in chasing her tail in circles trying to obtain a love that doesn't have conditions that doesn't require work or earning it in other words a one-way selfish kind of love where she is the only beneficiary where everyone pays her homage for nothing other than the good looks an star power she doesn't really have, so she can't afford that price of admission either.). In the end, she choice this path, the one of what's left, not the path that is right.
Oh adopt a pet. Go to a shelter. Rescue a sweetheart. Guaranteed tons of love.
Would you mind telling that to my heartless cat
The lining of his coat is red. I am assuming he is .............. the devil?
thats the beauty of it
He didn't seem too happy about her choice, I got the impression that he was hoping she'd choose the guy she went to school with instead of what she chose. I think there's a lot more to the story than we saw personally.
chinookvalley
Of course,
Devil don't do recycling
NigelThornberryVEVO...There is no beauty to it at all.
THAT first bottle was one tough bottle.
I think she is seeing him in a near death experience probably a heart attack.
That's why her heart starts at the end.
Which is why she does not act that surprised to see him.
Her old school friend is just a metaphor for how she will always make the wrong decision because she has no closure and the courage that comes with it.🙁
Couldn't really say that this is sci-fi, but it was a good watch none-the-less. Very open to interpretation, and certainly I have mine... but, I think I will keep it to myself and leave the suspense and mystery unsullied.
So, the Devil drives a Fury with cop wheels & caps? Nice.
That was a bit of brilliant!
Awesomely done!!! Major kudos to all involved in it's making and presentation !!!!
Giving up what you need just for what you think you want. Truth is, both can be had through compassionate creation.
BRuuuuuuuuuh! It's the rich cuban dude from Royal Pains!
I am not effervescent. Loved it.
Excellent story...great acting too! Loved it.
Excellent performance from Campbell Scott. I think he is portraying Time.
"He" clearly has experience with human nature.
I so want his car. That is a dream car of mine. Love it.
The man is in a kind of purgatory. While the woman (and others who follow her) may be kindly souls who deserve love, and lots of it, the man may have been an ass in life who squandered such love and is thus consigned to keep giving it - or at least providing for it - in a perpetual, semi-after life.
Yes Ron I think your the only one who got it right.
He was a creep while alive and now as punishment he has to do this thankless hollow job for all eternity.
With no pleasure and no pain.
Just a numbness for the hell he put others through.
The devil has a bangin ride!
What great actor. The son of George C Scott!
I thought the box was her inhibitions, her innocence, her naivety, her comfort. The guide gave her a glimpse of what could be when they left it behind. Traveling down the road, she's going to find choices. Call her old friend? Pursue fame? I didn't get a read on this guy trying to lead her to damnation nor eternal happiness, though he hoped she made a better choice perhaps. Maybe I got this one wrong.
Aegelis: It was her soul.
Campbell Scott! I knew I recognized this actor--his eyes and voice were so familiar--but I couldn't place him. It's been years since I've seen him in a film so when I thought of him it was with black hair.
I really love that guy's car, a sixty's Plymouth, maybe a Fury. Not sure of the model name.
Pretty good 👍 video too.
The male actor has been in all sorts of movies and TV shows but I can think of his name right now either.
He's been around for years. I remember him in shows or movies when he was in his late teens and early 20's.
He never became a huge star but did work on a regular basis, but I've not seen him in anything new in quite a while as far as I can remember.
Ahhh, as soon as I got post remembered his name. Campbell Scott, the son of George C Scott.
I hope this guy does books on tape. What a great voice!
He has, I think a Stephen King one and others. Also has narrated docos (did one on American history that I watched just to hear him 😉)
The Morning Light...not as evil as we've been led to believe.
Not sure I'd classify this as sci-fi, however.
It's like Eros gone stonencold in reminding everyone that LOVE is not something that works with a click
Nice spin on making a deal with the Devil
Excellent. One of my faves.
Beautifully conveyed! Watched over after reading comments.
i thought redheads didn't have souls
Consider yourself educated. Quick fact - redheads have several genetic advantages over the rest of the world. Cool evolution going on there. Looks like humans are evolving into redheads.
nypost.com/2017/12/02/science-shows-redheads-have-genetic-superpowers/
Symbolism I noticed: The landscape is dead and decaying, she calls it lonely but it's actually lifeless. Her calls her a cynic but she calls herself a romantic then says the two are near in meaning - the first implies a lack of sincerity and the second an idealized reality. He told her to turn left. The Latin for left is "sinister".
Maybe, he is condemned to stand there unless someone turns down the offer.....
Wow!
Why has Campbell Scott (hubba, hubba! Sorry, but I LOVE him) got the car from Supernatural? Oh....wait...he's a demon, oh okay...well, that actually makes more sense; especially as he has a bit of heart.... Jeez I wonder if Dean knows Sam's been loaning his car out? Maybe if they check the boot, Castiel can give the stuff back. lol!
So true, many of realize too late, our chances for love were many, but maybe if I wait it out a little longer, something better will come, and then time runs out, and we are old and lonely, and that’s not a good look.
Awesome car!
Good story here, well done. The classic Plymouth is wonderful too.
in the search of something big, we just ignore or forgets the things offered to us
Well done! Rob Feld? Good job, Rob.
I do believe her soul was in that box.
Excellent!!!!
Feels like it's set in the American Gods universe. Fantastically well done on every count!
Blind as we all are to what we actually need and trade it with what we want instead and the cycle of unhappiness keeps repeating itself...... the wish granting dark angel is something.....
wow, so abstract, yet so accessible.
Of course the Devil drives a Plymouth. And God drives a 1959 Buick.
Terrifically well crafted.
Isn't that Campbell Scott?
Yes, it is.
Wow he is really handsome.....
How do you manage to get all the big names to act in your videos? Seen a few big celebs in one or two. Saying that, the ones I have never heard of are so awesome too, real professionals :)
Wired but good 👍
Wow! Very nice! Why does that actor look familiar?
Ok, never mind. Campbell Scott.
I cringed when he put the bottle on the car then my heart skipped a beat when it fell 😮
so... He works in shipping!
This has kind of a Mamet flavor to it.
Wow! You are right! Too bad most of the people who commented here wouldn't know who David Mamet was
Very nicely done. I'm not sure why everyone who trades a soul (? Essence/whatever) packs it up in the same kind of cardboard box, but that's a pretty small quibble.
Because all souls want the same things deep down. The box is merely dressing, it's symbolic. Just something to containerize the soul so that it can be captured, acquired, given and taken away. It serves no function other than to hide that which is unseeable and can't be visualized thus to the living.
BORIS!
Wow! Really, really good.
Amazing!
Many have done it. Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Leonardo DiCaprio and all the rest.
They know it's non-refundable but don't care as long as they have love, lots of it.
They all feel that empty space inside too but accept the price.
Also, don;t forget, Joel Osteen, John Wesley Fletcher, Albert Benjamin Simpson , they also made a bad trade and ended up deceiving people
I drive that Plymouth.
did the leather coat guy give her a chance so she WOULDNT have to give up her soul>?
If you've never met the devil you've never met this man.
Interesting Devil interpretation, but imho the best devils are in "Allegro Legends" by Baginski.
Reminds me of a movie when a homeless guy was taking sad memories from people for $20.
The type of love she wanted was to be loved and adored like the girl in the poster, not to be loved and adored by a single person with which could be resiprocated. She threw it away when it presented itself. The type of love she wanted has a path to destruction, and shortness of life like so many living the "Sex drugs and rock'n'roll" lifestyle. She was reminded of the toll it takes by her sudden short attack getting into the car, but it didn't stop her. She was given a chance and heads up by the entity who presented her true love in the shape of the guy, she didn't take it. The souls in the boot showed us that many humans will sell their soul for materialism and notoriety "high" in the short term and it looked like the entity wanted a change of venue and beer which could only be granted once a human takes up "it's" offer and chance to rethink after the drink from the fridge. Until then it's business as usual Inc the same bloody beer, and he's bored and pissed. (That's my take on it anyway guys, thing is, this short film had done it's job in the sense it's provoking ideas on what we think it's supposed to represent. great acting also, kudos to all)
Hermoso! 🤗
This is the difference between loving love and loving life.
Love as a drug.
Just another drug!
Just another way to divert your life from the real problem.
That your life is missing something and usually it's an answer!LOL 😂
For once on dust I think I got it..he is a demon or the devil. And the trunk boxes are full of souls...
Was that Campbell Scott?
Yes.
The guy should get casted in more roles like this -- dark, ambiguous; you question his motives. Great short, btw!
that's the guy from Singles
Who carries their soul in a cardboard box nowadays? Most women would like to carry it in a Gucci handbag but settle for Radley.
He's most likely god as someone once described him as 80% maleficent and 20% effective. The stats certainly work out.
oh nice its that guy out of house of cards
What did the boxes represent?
Hmm, my guess is, he's some kind of devil, and those boxes contain souls?
Why date the guy from highschool when the grey fox is way hotter lol
The real devil NEVER says, "Are you sure you want to go through with it"?
How would you know? Have you ever spoken with the Devil, Jerry? Have you?
Khalid Goldstein He is a liar & murderer, & I know the persons who have spoken with him.
Brilliant ;-)
I feel like I'm that guy they blow off
Him expecting a "Good" response from these people is unrealistic because of his true nature.
fallen angel...
