Its an electrical diagnostic tool every DIY mechanic should have. You all know by now that electronics are the backbone of modern cars. Every component ties in to the computer system! A multimeter is a basic tool to measure critical aspects of a digital electronic system: voltage, resistance, current. A small fluctuation in these parameters could wreak havoc on electronic vehicle systems! This video shows you the basics of using a multimeter to diagnose several common electrical problems in your vehicle.
Here are some things you can do with your multimeter!

Be nice to have a ballpark idea what readings should be ie on amps and fan test you spoke about you said maybe 4 amps on old fan and 2 amps maybe on newer fan. My was thought is higher better but have no idea if 2 thru 5 amps or whatever is good or if 0 would indicate bad along with 6 or more being bad ???
I tested my battery which showed perfect voltage. So, I figured I had a different electrical issue. I looked and looked and tested everything I could think of. It
was -30°F in Alberta for 10 days in January 2020. It turned out I needed the battery test you mentioned which told me my battery had two cells that were bad. I learn something everyday. But, I wish I'd known about the "true" battery function test. Until I took it to a battery shop I didn't know of this other, true battery test.

Thank you very important
Good vid on using a tool that many are intimidated by.
You nailed it describing me.
Decent video. Felt a little rushed and incomplete. More detail while keeping it simple. Thank you for the video and all your efforts you have been a big help to a lot of people. Do not be discouraged we love your videos, keep them coming.❤
What l like most of you is the way u talk the way you take time, bless you good teacher

Love this video that make me understand more about the usage of DVOM. An automotive student from Canada. 31-07-2023
Good explanation
Please upload about ignition coil ohm's and ampere.
Great video, super helpful for me. Thanks!
Auto electric for dummies...so grateful for these videos!
When testing amperage draw (such as the fan motor example) doesn't the fan have to be running- actually drawing amps??
Excellent explanation. Thanks
hey.. happy tosee you are stiil around making videos.. you rock.
great job
Super helpful. Thank you.

Can this be used to test connector plugs ? My coolant plug got wet and I wanna make sure it works probably after I dry it and plug it back into the sensor
When testing auto parts does it matter which side you put the leeds on when testing continuity or volts?
That's great. But what if the wire is hooked up in the car/truck??? Not just a wire laying around.......... A little helpful but definitely missed the mark. I'll find another video guess.
So when testing on 20 k is testing the ohms I was wondering why on the meter it's doesn't say OL
Can u show how to test 3 or 4 pronged connector and sensor
Should I get a voltmeter or multimeter as a beginner mechanic
It would have been helpful if you could have put in some real life examples on when you would do each type of test say for instance if you're installing a stereo what test you may need to do at that time or trying to fix it 12-volt Outlet
Hello i need to see if my car has a bad wire harness and I have a mulit meter
Any tips?
Hi! I want to test crankshaft position sensor ! How can I do that? Thank you!!!
Ohm it out
Dumb question but…. I connected the multimeter to my car battery and immediately my interior light and the clock lit up. But nothing was captured on the multimeter. Would you know what causes that. I’m trying to diagnose where the battery drainage is coming from because I charge the battery and then hours later it’s back to normal. Thank you in advance 😊
I would try testing the connector for the interior and wiggle the wires along the harness. Wire could’ve rubbed and is now intermittently shorting out. You can either check the voltage, or try homing out the harness. You’d need access to the whole length of wire from beginning to end though
Do they have a video showing how to test House wall plugs, and wiring circuits?
+Charles Coker Thank you for your question. Typically our How-To videos are for automotive repairs. You could try looking on youtube.
Thanks you guy are the best. Do you have a school program? that a great idea
How do you test carburetor with multimeter
Anyone know how to move the decimal point over? It’s unclear
Decimal point is determined by the range you have the meter set. A lot of multimeters are auto ranging meaning the meter figures out proper range for voltage, ohms, and amps. Suggest spending a little extra money and getting one like that if you are serious about learning how to use a test meter.
Is a car built-in voltmeter not as accurate as a multimeter?
What if my battery is in my trunk 😢
+Maygen Castorena This procedure might be different for your application. We do not currently have a how-to video for this particular year, make and model. Thank you for asking! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
