I probably listened to Hawaii Part II about 50 times and I’m still not 100% sure what it is about
Perhaps Zeal and Ardor's Stranger Fruit, it's a really awesome listen
Tackle Deathpile's GR. It's all based on a true story presented in a style that fits so well since Gary Ridgway was himself a man of extremes. He had a lot of emotions about the world around him, but those emotions were never slight or distant, everything was top notch for him. Jonathan Canady's devastating vocals alone are nerve wracking.

My dad played drums for Jamie in the 90s. I went and saw Xiu Xiu in July at the Chapel and afterwards I spoke to Jamie. He is such a genuine person. So glad you're covering Xiu Xiu, they deserve so much more love and attention.

@@zweiihanderr jamie was in a band called 10 In the swear jar before xiu xiu that formed in 1999, so he could have played for that or another obscure band he was in around that time.

Another great gem on this channel. I remember when I first discovered "Girl with Basket of Fruit" and it sounded like nothing I had heard before. And that is great about music - to be introduced to sounds you never thought would be combined and developed into a song. Find artists that go beyond the threshold and are not afraid to show their sound.

The first track 'Girl With A Basket Of Fruit' blends electronic with Candombe/Candomblé, an african rythm that is very popular in Uruguay (South America), played in the streets with just drums, imagine me as an Uruguayan listening to this for the first time, it was just incredible

Xiu Xiu is an incredible project, Jamie one of my favorite songwriters of all time. He’s one of the few artist I always feel genuine and extremely sincere, like being naked in front of a mirror.
Jamie’s approach to letting the listener decode their own feelings and thoughts on the music of Xiu Xiu without any overt input from the band itself is really fascinating. It reminds me of the likes of Tool or even David Lynch who place a great deal of importance on allowing the consumer of their art to formulate their own view on what the media represents to them.

I LOVE Xiu Xiu. I got into them right out of High School. A friend turned me on to the album A Promise and I fell in love with the albums brutal honesty and creativity. Ian Curtis' Wishlist is so haunting. The album Knife Play is also another personal favorite. I feel that Jamie in more ways than one has helped me creatively while being a music artist. I'm happy to know that you Pad are also a fan!
When this album dropped, it was the perfect realization of everything I wanted from them in this era. It sounded as if, much like its predecessor Forget, it took the sonic discussions crafted on Angel Guts: Red Classroom, selected an avenue of exploration, and dove straight in. Where Forget was a launch towards industrial pop and synth pop with further danceability, Girl With Basket of Fruit dove into the frightening organics of post industrial and created what is in my eyes Forget's perfect foil. With what I've heard of the upcoming release, it sounds like it'll be either further down the trail of Girl With Basket of Fruit or a new adjacency from Angel Guts: Red Classroom. In any event, I am very excited.

I love weird, obscure music like this and I've been on the search for an album or song from when I was a kid that sounds a lot like Xiu Xiu, but with vocals much more distant and whispery.

Also dont wanna sound pretentious but getting into more genres of music really helps (or at least it helped me)

I haven’t listened to this since it came out. Mary Turner Mary Turner traumatized me for awhile. The soundscape and instrumental choices over such a ghastly ACCURATE story and it’s disgusted conclusion kept me awake at night for several weeks.
Everything that’s been said about it has been said a hundred times. But even when I saw Xiu Xiu with Daughters and Health (pre-quarantine 2019) in DC, I got to meet Jamie and he was the sweetest nugget of a person ever. I just could not connect the music to these genius musicians. This album is an entity completely separate from its composers. And it’s guttural and terrifying and without form.
Mary Turner Mary Turner is indeed very terrifying. Really makes you think about how disturbing the story really is.
On their bandcamp, not the official but their other bandcamp they have released the original inspiration for this album deforms the unborn
Was really stoked to see this on my home page. More people need to listen to this album and Xiu Xiu in general
always love to see more coverage of shoe shoe, would also like to hear your thoughts on Jamie’s side projects over the years if you’re interested. lately it’s been a lot of noise / drone but earlier on he was in more offbeat stuff like ibopa and ten in the swear jar that experimented with mambo music / ska and accordions over electronic art rock - definitely worth a listen if nothing else.

Thank you for covering Xiu Xiu! I listened to them obsessively years ago, and this video is a call to go back to them. The intensity was their signature back then too. Dear God I Hate Myself will be forever my hangover song.

@@PadChennington I’m still making my way through xiu xiu’s discography, but two albums of their’s I’d highly recommend are Forget and A Promise. Forget is a really detailed and full poppy album, it has some incredible production and blends both pop and experimental sounds in a really cohesive way. Incredibly catchy tunes within an incredibly dense soundscape (at least, until the album ventures into more minimalistic territory on the second half). A Promise is like the polar opposite, it’s a brutal stripped down mental breakdown given sonic form. It’s imperfect and raw and it’s so beautiful for it. Ian Curtis Wishlist made me burst into tears after repeated listens once it finally clicked. It’s so deeply personal and so potent in the amount of emotions it expresses with so little sounds. It might not resonate with you on first listen but goddamn it really hits deep when it does. I’d love to hear your thoughts on both :D
Hi Pad, love your videos. An unrelated question to the video, but how do you feel about discographies on Bandcamp and their pricing? For example, the Geometric Lullaby discography only costs $5 minimum for 111 albums currently, that's ridiculously cheap, to the point where I wouldn't feel comfortable paying so little for so much great music. On the other hand, if it was $5 an album it'd be $555 for the whole lot, which is far too much for me to spend. I currently just buy albums I like individually, but I just wondered what your thoughts are on this as well as other cases where artists/labels don't have the ability to purchase their discography at all, like your own label.

never thought i'd see you cover this. this album is the musical equivalent of a snuff film. horrifying, but also impossible to ignore. definitely one of my favorite albums of all time.
I remember starting with Twin Peaks too.... I was so surprised when I heard their other stuff. XD
By Girl I was already a fan but hearing it during their premiere made me feel like I was there for a part of music history, something I've only ever felt with the Glowing Man by Swans.... Not to say those are my favorite albums ever but I remember listening to something that was so unlike anything else I heard and not seeing anyone talk about them yet. It was a really great experience!

hey pad, I saw your video on Bruce Springsteen's darkest album. I think you should do one on the darkest album of the beach boys. Surfs up is an album that came out in 1971, well past their surfing music and past pet sounds as well. The name exists purely in an ironic sense, as the whole album is meant to tear down their reputation as a fun loving surf rock band. I would love to see you make a video on it

xiu xiu's music is so wild to me, it's raw, loud, emotional, gritty, hard hitting, it's a beast, every project i've heard so far has been a rollercoaster, it's wonderful i love it when music does that, i wish more music was willing to be as bold as Jamie's

I heard this album a while back while working in a city, it fit very well along with the really REALLY heavy lyrics and sound, it felt like I was hearing things from those in the city itself. Or rather, the spirit(s) of the city
My guy, you need to experience A Promise. Equally as harrowing and I'd argue their more emotional counterpart to Girl With Basket of Fruit.

I got to see XiuXiu in either 2017 or 2018 and Jamie's performance was just breathe taking. I briefly got to talk to him because he was at the merch table he was really great to talk to

My favorite album by my favorite band
I just found that Xiu Xiu was formed in my hometown, San Jose, California. I also thought it was cool that Jamie played with other local bands, as well as throughout the Bay Area. I’m gonna binge his stuff some time.

Have you done sleepytime gorilla museum they are a super interesting and I would say pretty dark. I would recommend the album Of Natural History. I found it to be my favorite of the albums they put out.
I've only ever heard one song by Xiu Xiu. "I Broke Up". I haven't heard it since it came out, but to this day the phrase "this is the worst vacation ever. I'm going to cut open your forehead with a roofing shingle" pops into my head on a regular basis, haha.
I've personally written over 4000 words on this album, and I could just keep writing.

I've listened to this album a time ago but really i wasn't into it, i'm gonna try listening it in the future and give it another chance. But i loved the whole concept, it's just that i'm not familiar with Xiu Xiu music, but surely going to listen to them.
the mary turner mary turner song rlly reminds me of the song hamburger lady by throbbing gristle. to this day i cannot listen to that song, not because of the sounds but just the mere fact that it actually happened, at some point in time these things actually happened to real people. scares the living shit out of me.

It's very surreal to me for you to discuss albums and projects that aren't vaporwave. Both of these new videos are about very dark albums that fit in with the obscure vaporwave/drone you've talked about before. What if you talked about a project that's just pure sunshiny joy, vaporwave or otherwise. Although I don't have any projects to request in particular, just something happy and sunny after a few more of these darker videos.
I'm halfway through the video, and I have yet to hear a single sound from the album.

I think that the obvious choice to talk about would be Soundtracks For The Blind since you can talk about that album for an eternity, but I think that more contemplative albums like The Seer and The Glowing Man would make a fun video.
