  • Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is the longest and highest aqueduct in the UK. Crossing the Dee Valley, it’s a grade 1 listed building and part of a World Heritage Site.
The aqueduct is 1,007ft (307m) long and 126ft (38m) above the river. Designed by engineer Thomas Telford, it was one of his first major projects. Telford’s plans used a cast-iron trough to carry water and boats across the valley. The structure would be more than 3 times the height of existing aqueducts.
The aqueduct was built during the 20 years of so-called ‘canal mania’ between 1790 and 1810. Over 1,180 miles (1,900km) of canal were completed over this period.

I was hoping for more construction details from the ICE (how is the section sealing done, how is expansion managed? How does the support below the trough work? What are the loading margins? Turn out wikipedia has much better info (although it could do with some drawings)

Superficial explanation. Expected civil engineers to show us how it works, from end-to-end. 🤷‍♂️

Fascinating and not a little miraculous. But why this obnoxious obsession with background, no, middleground, no, foreground (dare I call it) music that threatens the narrator at every syllable!

You're right that the music is far too loud. In fact, it really shouldn't be there at all.

Great video. Inspiring engineering but truly terrible music. its overly loud and somehow manages to be quite irritating and truly banal at the same time.

I've searched, but I haven't found anyone explaining how the boats and water get up 126 feet. Everyone seems to assume that everyone must just know.

It's actually around 317 feet above sea level and boats can get from sea level to this aqueduct by means of around 70 locks over a distance of around 120 miles. The water comes from the River Dee further up the valley under gravity along a navigable feeder channel.
