@@andjj9038 Jamieson, Alan G. (2013). Lords of the Sea: A History of the Barbary Corsairs. Canada: Reaktion Books. p. 59. ISBN 978-1861899460. Desperate to find some explanation for the sudden resurgence of Muslim sea power in the Mediterranean after centuries of Christian dominance, Christian commentators in the sixth century (and later) pointed to the supposed Christian roots of the greatest Barbary corsair commanders. It was a strange kind of comfort. The Barbarossas certainly had a Greek Christian mother, but it now seems certain their father was a Muslim Turk. Attempts were made to give Greek Christian parents to Turgut Reis, but all the indications are that he came from a Muslim Turkish peasant family.
Khizr was born in the 1470s on the island of Lesbos in the village Palaiokipos.[1] According to his own autobiography, he was the son of a Turkish father, Yakup, who settled in the island after its conquest by the Ottomans and a local Greek mother named Katerina.[2][3] He also referred to his father as "Yusuf Yakub al-Turki" on the inscription of the mosque he built in Algiers, thus claiming that his father was of Turkish origin.[3]

In my home town in Algeria called Jijel we have a boat made of coper in the city centre called khir edin and baba arrouj' boat it symbolizes the Barbarossa brothers when they arrived to jijel/Algeria to kick the Spanish out of our country. So much history in Algeria, it was a hub for many civilisations and empires coming from europe and the middle east, hence a very diverse culture and languages.

Please, some misrepresentations must be addressed:
    1. Hayreddin wasn't a pirate, he was a corsair (privateer). the word corsair in English, corsaire in French, corsaro in Spanish, and korsan in turkish comes from the Latin word corsan. Unlike the pirate who pillages whatever cross his path and doesn't pledge allegiance to any political entity, the corsair operates under the sovereignty of a certain political entity and attacks its enemies only. The pirate is the enemy of all whereas the corsair is the a legitimate sea warrior.
    2. Oruç reis wasn't killed by the spaniards and the natives of Algeria in 1508. He was killed by the Spaniards and their allies of the natives (the kingdom of tlemcen). Not all the natives were against him as a lot of them were in his army and help him fight against the Spaniards.
Aside from that, it is a great video. Keep up the good work. Thank you.

His ancestor Yakup Bey is a Turkish Sipahi settled in Vardar Yenice. Vardar Yenicesine came from Anatolia and settled. Hayreddin Pasha had his father's name written as Turkish Yakup on the inscription of a mosque he had built. and he mentions himself and his soldiers as Turks in his diary.

At that time, the western states that committed genocide against the indigenous people in the Americas suffered a great defeat in the presence of Barbaros Pasha. He lived during the years when the Ottoman Empire was a superpower.(Period of Suleiman the Magnificent) There was no power that could stand against the Ottomans at sea and on land. @@Universal.. Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha was born on Lesbos Island in the 1470s as one of the four sons of Vardarlı Yakup Ağa, a cavalryman of Turkish or Albanian origin, one of the Vardar Aghas of Thessaloniki and the conquerors of Lesbos, and Katerina, a Greek woman from the island people. By the way, just for info, Albania also belonged to the Ottoman Empire for over 400 years, so it's fair to say that he was a Turk.

Some people in the comment section are fighting over his ethnicity. Was he Turkish or Albanian or Algerian? The real answer and ONLY CORRECT ANSWER IS: Who cares about ethnicty and race when Allah swt commanded you to not care about anything except being muslim and devout!
Update: People are still arguing in the comments as if they don't even care about Allah's opinion but only their own. Race or colour or nationality is as worthless as all our opinions. It does NOT matter NOT EVEN A LITTLE BIT.
What matters is how many Barbarossa's are there today? How many follow his example or the best of examples of the Prophet PBUH?

    • @theislamicjourney960
      @theislamicjourney960 2 роки тому +12

@Rijad Emrulai Thats great. How devout are those Albanians today? Should they lead the islamic world? If not then history has NO VALUE when you don't take any lessons from it!
The sole lesson to be taken is that Islam brings honour. Islam will be victorious with or without you. Allah swt doesn't need us to achieve anything. We need him. So its an honour for us to be muslims. Albanians can think he was Albanian. Algerians can think he was Algerian. For all we care American muslims can think he was from the America's. So show your honour and piety today. Be an example.

All respect and admiration to the founder of the Algerian state and unifier of my country, when he told the Algerians he couldn’t do more than he did without joining the Ottoman Empire, then Algerians gladly accepted the request and so did the Ottoman Sultan selim yavuz. So when you say original inhabitants of Algeria, you made a mistake, it was a local corrupt ruler, hayreddin couldn’t do much with few sailors without proper local help, Algeria did a lot for Ottoman Empire, hope the Turks Know this.

The origins and early years of Hayreddin are obscured by tales concerning him that originated in the sixteenth century but were sensationalized by Europeans in the seventeenth. Fortunately, more reliable information from Hayreddin himself corrects these inaccuracies that misrepresent his background and early activities. Hayreddin's father, Yakub, the son of a sipahi from the Balkans in the vicinity of Vardar Yenice (present-day Giannitsa in Greece), volunteered to participate in the conquest of Lesbos in 1462. Vardar Yenice had been the center of "gazi" expansion in the late fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. But Yakub must have found greater opportunities on Lesbos because he remained on the island and married a local woman, the daughter of a Christian. Yakub and his wife had four sons-Ishak, Oruç, Hızır, and Ilyas-two of whom, Oruç and Hızır (known as Hayreddin to Muslims and Barbarossa to Europeans), became famous seafarers. Although Hayreddin's father's ethnicity is debatable, on the mosque that Hayreddin built in Algiers in 1520, he identified his father as a Turk. As the son of a cavalryman in the Balkans, his father might have been a descendant of either the earlier Turkish raiders who were centered on Vardar Yenice under Gazi Evrenos or of the local inhabitants who lived there. What is most likely for the later fifteenth century was that he had ancestry from both groups. That Hayreddin emphasized on the mosque that he built in Algiers that his father was "Turkish" made sense in the context of the spread of Turkish-speaking seafarers into the waters of the western Mediterranean that had begun under Kemal Reis and Piri Reis. In light of the developing conflict in the western Mediterranean where Muslim Turkish-speaking seafarers from the eastern Ottoman lands were beginning to lead resistance to Habsburg expansion in North Africa, this aspect of his identity would have merited emphasis.'
    Isom-Verhaaren, C., n.d. The Sultan's fleet. p.108.
Lines 3-4 of this six line inscription provided the following detail relative to Hayreddin and his paternal lineage:
السلطان المجاهد في سبيل الله رب العلمين مولاناخير الدين ابن الامير الشهير المجاهد ابی یوسف یعقوب الترکی
    Es-sultânü'l mucâhid fi sebîlï'llâhi Rabbi'l-âlemîn
    Mevlâna Hayreddin ibnü'l-emîrü'ş-şehir el-mücâhid
    Ebi Yusuf Ya'kub et-Türki
Sultan of the Warriors for the faith-fi sebîlï'llâhi Rabbi'l-âlemîn (in the service of God, Lord of all mankind)- Our Lord Hayreddin, Son of the Great Emir, the Celebrated, the Warrior for the Faith, the father of Yusuf, Ya'kub-the Turk
In addition, at the end of line six it provides the date: 19-28 Cemâziyelevvel 926 (April 19-28, 1520). This date establishes that his mescid was built in the very period that Hızır Reis was seeking the assistance of the Ottoman ruler Selim 1. Their negotiations culminated with his acceptance of Ottoman suzerainty on September 20, 1520. From that date forward he named the Ottoman rulers both on the coins he minted in Algiers and in the hutbe (Friday prayer sermon),¹4
The use of the honorific 'Hayreddin' on the Algiers inscription appears to undermine the oft repeated assertion of Şeraffetin Turan and others that it was bestowed upon him either by Sultan Selim or Sultan Süleyman, establishing instead that he must have been so known prior to his entering Ottoman service. 15 Indeed, it suggests that this is how he was commonly known in Algiers as early as April 1520, i.e., as the endower he presumably would not have used it on his mescid's inscription were it not the name he was known locally by.16
Hadjianastasis, M., 2015. Frontiers of the Ottoman imagination. Leiden: Brill, p.192.
This petition, initiated by Barbaros, was sent to Selim (together with four ships and numerous slaves for the ruler and his commanders), requesting his assistance in combating the Spanish for control of North Africa and offering the Ottoman ruler the over lordship of Algiers.18 It names Oruç and his brother Hayreddin, i.e., clearly 'Hızır' was calling himself 'Hayreddin' prior to his formally entering Ottoman service.19 In short, the hon orific rather than having been bestowed by either Selim or Süleyman, appears to have been self-granted.
Was the Algiers inscription our only source for the name of Hayreddin's father, we might rightfully conclude that it confirms that his father was a Turk named Ya'kub. Less clear is the manner in which the name is given. It appears as: Hayreddin bin..... Ebi Yusuf Ya'kub et-Türki (literally: Hayreddin, Son of.... the father of Yusuf, Ya'kub the Turk), a form which is to say the least con fusing. Some earlier writers, in an attempt to make sense of it, have suggested (incorrectly in my view) that it should in fact be literally read and interpreted as: Ya'kub the Turk, the father of Yusuf,20 and then concluded that Ya'kub in fact had five not four sons: while others have simply given the names found on the inscription with no translation and no comment on the strange form of the name.21
My reason for not accepting a literal interpretation of the phrase: 'the father of Yusuf, Ya'kub the Turk, i.e., for rejecting the idea that Yusuf was indeed a fifth son of Ya'kub, is based upon the fact that the Gazavât-ı Hayreddin Paşa clearly states that Ya'kub and Katarina had four sons:
After a period of time their marriage resulted in the birth of four capable sons, among which the eldest is named Ishak and the second is named Oruç and the third is named Hızır, who is called His Excellency Hayreddin Paşa at this time, and the youngest is named İlyas,22
Hadjianastasis, M., 2015. Frontiers of the Ottoman imagination. Leiden: Brill, p.193.
Andalusia in Spain.83 According to the Gazavat (and therefore Hayreddin himself), Hayreddin was the son of a Muslim father and a Greek mother. Another significant source that reveals Hayreddin's self-identification is the inscription on the mosque he built in Algiers. This inscription dating to April 1520 states that he was: 'al-sultan al-mudjahid mawlana Khayr al-Din ibn al-amir al shahir al-mudjahid Abi Yusuf Ya'kub al-Turki.'84 Thus Hayreddin claimed that his father was 'Turkish.' Whether this inscription reflected the conflict with the Habsburgs in the western Mediterranean where Turkish speaking seamen had been raiding Christian shipping since the 1490s or whether Hayreddin's father was descended from Turkish settlers in the Balkans is impossible to determine.
Brantôme related a story that he had heard about the origins of the Barbarossa brothers, although he stated that it was generally known that Hayreddin was from Lesbos. According to Brantôme, a French noble family claimed that the Barbarossas were actually from France, but, since they had gone to Lesbos and converted to Islam, it was thought that they were originally from there. He admitted that this claim was unlikely, but that if it were true Hayreddin brought honor to France. Brantôme discussed Hayreddin's ancestry in his 'Discours' on French couronnels. When he described his exploits in his collection of biographies of great foreign commanders, he referred the reader back to what he had previously written concerning Barbarossa's ancestry. Brantôme considered Hayreddin both possibly French, because of his ancestry, and foreign, because of his service to Süleyman, the Ottoman sultan. While historians continue to debate the ethnic origins of the Barbarossa brothers, Hayreddin remained loyal to the Ottoman sultan despite offers from Charles V to persuade him to enter his service.
In the days before he became the admiral of the Turkish Navy, Barbarossa never forgot that he was a Turk and a Muslim. When he and Aruj first came to Tunis, they were not acting in the sultan's service , but they were not pirates either . They were privateers who sought profit for themselves by attacking their country's enemies .
Grant, N., 1972. Barbarossa, the Pirate King. New York: Hawthorn Books, p.72.
