  • Cultus Lake, British Columbia. Since it's a 10 minute drive from my house, I thought it's about time I started to figure out the fishing in this lake a bit. In this episode I get in the water to fish for smallmouth bass. It was a blast, but not as easy as you might think. 2 hours in the water got me 3 fish to take home. I'm pretty sure I'll get better at this kind of fishing over time.

      @@skinz1234 The fishing pole is ghetto. Just a crappy old reel taped to the top half of a rod that I found in the lake. The type of wetsuit you need depends on what type of water you want to swim in. I often swim in the middle of winter, so I have a 5mm open cell freediving suit, some people even use 7 mm. In the summer in lakes a 3mm well fitting suit is enough. If you're in the Vancouver area Diving Sports has all kinds of great suits to try on.

    Would stirring up the redds help keep the numbers down?

    • @petrhermanadventures9509
      @petrhermanadventures9509  2 роки тому

      Some people are already doing that. The fishing community are a bit divided here. Many people feel that we should just accept that the bass are here and enjoy the fishery. I'm not completely decided myself. The damage is done, best we can do is keep the numbers down. Pike minnows were the dominant predator in this lake for awhile, now maybe it will be the bass. Either way the Sockeye are fucked unless there is an extensive effort to keep agricultural runoff out of the lake.

    Never ceases to amaze me how people will kill the larger spawning bass, destroying a fantastic fishery for a run of about 400-100 salmon and some sculpin. These fish are truly vilified, literally the pitbulls of the freshwater world. How lame.

      I realise opinions vary. The really lame move was by the person who wilfully planted bass in the lake. I choose to go with the opinion of the fisheries biologists on this one. In the end, no matter what we do, the bass are there to stay. I did not waste these fish. All the meat was utilised and I had fun catching them. If you consider that all the bass spawn in spring and people continue to fish them, then I'm not doing anything different, except I did it knowingly. It bothers me when people kill pike minnows just because someone told them they were bad and waste the meat. My point is that I totally understand your point of view and will take it into consideration as my ethics regarding this fishery continue to evolve. I'm sure you'd agree that educating people about bass biology and behaviour is not a bad thing, regardless of how you feel about me catching them.
