    Thank you for this video. I just got a job as a seamstress at a local cleaners and the blind hem machine (a far, far older model from the same brand in your video!) has quickly become my nemesis. I would love to see an additional “troubleshooting” video showing the effects of tension too tight/too loose or the less/more wheel too “less” or too “more.” The reason I called the blind hem machine my nemesis is that with practice on my first few days, I learned to routinely produce good hems on basic dress pant material - but if the fabric is just the tiniest bit thicker or thinner, or the tiniest bit stretchy, everything just goes all wrong! I would love to learn how to adjust the machine to compensate for these problems rather than using my supervisor’s solution of just hemming “problem” pants by hand.

      It’s similar to every machine I think. If it’s too tight it bunches up and possibly break a needle. Too loose and it looks like poo.

      @@Constitutionalist52 The machine at my job actually runs fine (although the motor is possibly possessed by a demon, judging by the noise it makes), but it’s still my nemesis. One year in I can reliably force it to do my bidding, but it still requires something of a battle every time. The straight stitch machine is my faithful best friend and I’ve managed to figure out the temperamental serger’s sweet spot… but the blind stitch machine still constantly tries to ruin my day!

    This instruction video is very for 90% of the video. Note: at 7:03 in the video you show how to change the needle, but you're using the wrong needle system LWX5T. The machine takes a LWX6T needle which has the flat side facing out, not to the back of the machine. By using the wrong needle it can cause damage to the machine, break expensive needles and not sew properly.
    Although many machines take that needle, all the brands Tony, Rex, Reliable, Kobe, Mason CM-500 series take the system LWX6T, 29BL or LWX2T. These models were all copies of the brand Treasure BT500 by Nara Sewing Machine Industrial in Japan.

      Because the blind hemmer does not reverse you just have to run back over your initial stitching when you complete the circle. If you are just stopping at the end, I like to gently pull the tail thread after I snip it to tighten it around the fabric.

    • @sewshowwithshae
      @sewshowwithshae  10 місяців тому

      The feeder on the bottom side of the machine is adjusted by the tension dial which has a couple of numbers on it and usually has More and Less written above it. This makes it really easy because if you’re getting too much fabric jammed up under the needle, you just need to turn the dial to Less until it looks right.

    The needles you show are a LWx5T, but the machine seems to call for a LWx6T. I have the 6T and all the needles I get in that system seem too short. The looper isn't picking up the thread, I assume because the needle isn't pushing it far enough.

    • @sewshowwithshae
      @sewshowwithshae  2 роки тому +3

      The most common issue we have is incorrect needle placement in the machine. Make sure that:
      1. The flat edge is pressed exactly against the back side of the needle clamp
      2. The butt of the needle is seated all the way up inside the clamp groove
      3. The needle eye is sitting exact in the needle trench down by the arm
      ALL as you are tightening the screw to keep everything in place. This is trickier then it sounds and we often have to readjust a few times before getting it right. Good luck!!

      You may not be using the right needle, I have always had trouble getting the right length and bend shape when shopping for blind hemming needles. The timing is also very tricky on these machines, if you bought it used or have had it for a while it would be good to have it serviced.

    • @sewshowwithshae

      I have never bought a new belt for this machine as it is a portable versus a stationary so often we end up replacing the whole machine instead of individual parts. If you look very closely on the belt, there is often part numbers printed directly on the pieces of the machines.

    • @sewshowwithshae
      @sewshowwithshae  2 роки тому +1

      Yes - serger thread is notoriously low quality and can cause a lot of issues on all machines, we use gutermann skala - tex 15 (half the weight of normal thread) for the blind hemmer, it will run smoother and catch better as the arm sweepes across.

    • @sewshowwithshae
      @sewshowwithshae  3 роки тому +2

      There are a few things I would try;
      1. Change your needle! You likely won’t be able to tell just from looking at it if it has been bent, dulled etc. and make sure you get the correct needle (look at the needle in your machine so you know which side is the ‘flat’ side). Make sure the needle is seated allll the way up in the clamped area.
      2. Next, if that doesn’t work, loosen the tension - unlike a sewing machine, the tension on the numbered dial of this machine is affecting how much material is being shoved up into the channel so take that down (turn to the left) because you may be taking to big of a ‘bite’.
      3. Finally, try a lighter weight thread - I use 15 TEX, for reference, normal all-purpose poly is 30 TEX so blind hemming thread is about half the weight.
      Hope this helps!!!

    • @sewshowwithshae
      @sewshowwithshae  9 місяців тому

      Yes! BUT; three really important things; 1. absolutely definitely put oil in the designated spots, check your manual! 2. Change your needle and make sure that the flat edge is facing the right direction. All machines are different so it could be toward you or away and this matters A LOT. 3. Make sure you are using the correct thread, I prefer a Tex 15 which is about half the weight of a normal sewing thread. Good luck!!

    I have this machine and can't stand it. Don't bother buying if you have drapes with any type of lining. It's just good for thin fabrics.
    My only word of advice after using it for years on thicker fabrics - hold up your fabric about 5 - 6 inches ABOVE the plate as you feed it in. It's the only way you can "catch" it in the thread without risking it skipping.
    I gave up on it though, nobody wants to hold up a heavy drapery in the air for half an hour while sewing...

    I have the same machine and lately it has been acting up. I press the pedal and it doesn’t work, then sometimes it works. I tried finding out online what could be wrong but no one knows. Any idea? I don’t think it’s the pedal because when I manually turn the wheel, it starts working again.

    • @sewshowwithshae
      @sewshowwithshae  Рік тому

      This sounds like a missing connection point between the pedal and the cradle with the needle; this could be an electrical connection (hence; still being able to manually move the needle with the hand wheel) or there is some type of physical blockage like tangled thread or fabric debris in a hard to reach area of the machine. Good luck!!
