I purchased this pedal a few weeks ago from PGS and got it soon after. I've had this pedal for a couple weeks now and this pedal is a monster. The 12AX7's produce a monster OD tone. With 2 12AU's it produces a really sweet clean boost. Phil at effectrode was phenomenal in responding to my questions also and kudos to him for that, oh and for making a bad ass pedal.
Effectrode is the bomb. My favorite setup is with alternate lower output tubes in the #1 and or #2 position. Sounds fantastic in front of my THD bi-valve 30. Problem with this company is you will want all the pedals. Also the quietest pedals you will find anywhere and won't jeopardize the tone in your tube amp. If you are protective of your signal path and tube tone these are some pedals to check out.
I've been hoping you'd demo this ever since I heard this pedal on the Effectrode website and saw you were demoing a lot of their other pedals. I can't believe how amp-like and explosive it sounds. Best, most tube-like OD pedal I've heard by a wide margin! Too bad it's so crazy expensive!
I have Tube-Drive #0001 and couldn't be happier. Forget your "tube like" and "amp like" pedals. This doesn't simulate anything, IT IS a tube driven preamp to add to your rig, an outstanding unit in every way. Andy, I was interested in your use of the 12AV7, not long after getting mine I put one in the same position and that is my favorite setup.
I recomend the GE NOS 5965 with dual getter (12AV7 equivalent). These are medium mu tubes, which interact well with the Tube Drive for a very smooth response. There are bargins to be had on this tube on Ebay.
Andy, I was going to email you and ask you if you would do a review of this pedal. This review is very timely and helpful. As far as I'm concerned, your reviews set the bar for the rest of the industry. Thanks again.
@tommart123 you can get things called step down converters from most electronic stores, for not all that much all you need to know is the power requirements of the wall wart to determine how big your step down converter needs to be - be careful though, some bricks can take 110-240v, and the step downs are big and cumbersome, so use only necessary
This thing has a very similar sound to my duncan twin tube blue, but the bass is a bit better defined and it definitely has the potential for more gain. I just really wish there was a "brick & mortar" store that had these in stock. $400 is a lot for something that I've only heard youtube demos of. I don't even know anyone who has one. I'm finicky about just how the preamp section (or a "pedal" preamp like this) distorts, specifically how it reacts to subtle variations in pick-attack.
@TheSoyuken If all you need is an all-tube clean boost, try the Duncan Twin Tube Classic. With an overwound tele bridge pickup, it's squeaky clean on the rhythm channel with the gain at 11o'clock, and it can quadruple your signal on the front end of your amp if you peg the output volume. I set the gain on my PV Classic-30 to noon, a moderate crunch, then I step on the TT Classic, and it's high-gain like a 5150. You can get a "demo" of that setup in my uploads. I used it on all the heavier stuff.
Your cover of Ramble On blew my mind because of the punch, and bright and tighness, the amount of harmonics. Is it possible to obtain that with a higher gain tube and just rolling back the drive knob in the pedal or the volume knob in the guitar ?
@ThatBigMetalhead Judging by your handle... I should have expected you to say something like that. But come on man, you have to admit this has a glorious tone. As a fellow guitarist I hope you can appreciate that.
Also did you play with it's balls?... There's an internal trim pot with that lovely name on the circuit ball to further tailor the tonal possibilities. I can't wait to drive the unit even harder with their upcoming tube driven boost pedal, the Fire Bottle!!! It's a great time to be a guitarist...
How important is the order of the tubes? Like would there be a difference in the results if I put a 12AU7 in the middle socket vs. the first one with two 12AX7s?
Fantastic demo of what must be a great, if costly, bit of kit - £269 in the UK. But I want one. How does it react when you spill a pint of beer into it?
@ibanezman007 ive got the rocktron silver dragon (uses a 12ax7 tube) and it takes only about 10 seconds from the time i plug the pedal in till the time the tube is fully functional and hot. this might be just a little longer with 3 tubes but i doubt it. plug in and play baby!
really cool video! im just wondering what to buy from you guys. option1 sweet honey overdrive from mad professor option2 effectrode tube drive option 3 both, how would these two sound together? Im a pop rock blues player with a deluxe reverb reissue , stratocaster with tex mex and an LTD emg 81 and 85 Id really apreciate some help since I need to put my wish list for christmas to get the money ontime. PGS ROCKS!!!!!
@kungpow79 It's not even close to a tube amp in a box. The tube sound we're all after is as much, if mot more, a product of an overdriven power section, not just the pre-amp.
0_0 I think I'm in love... Would this be a good fit on a pedalboard in which it supplies overdrive tones next to a more traditional tube 'distortion' pedal, e.g. the tonebone plexi?
A lot of pedals with tubes don't actually drive the tubes, they use a SS circuit and the tubes are just there for a gimmick. True amp voltage means you are getting the real deal
I was wondering if you can use this pedal as a boost because I'm using an EHX English Muff'n as my main distortion and need something to boost for leads but I don't like TS type pedals
So? All solid state pedals are MADE to have their chips swapped out. Otherwise, they wouldn't be put in sockets (just like this pedal). What's your point, if you have one?
Only if I werent running a Marshall Super Lead already lol. btw to anyone reading this (including PGS employees): I think my power tubes are going a tad dim on my Super Lead. I think theres KT-88's in them at the moment. I want a nice tonal balanced crunch that sounds like it growls out of this Marshall. Im not sure what pre amp tubes I have in there. 12AX7s? ANYWAYS,what power tubes, pre amp tubes, or preamp/power tube combonation would be good for this tone? Thanks!
What type of sound are you going for? If you're just looking to "boost" the distortion I would just try a solid overdrive pedal. If you're willing to spend the cash Robert Keeley Pedals are absolutely phenomenal. Good Luck on the search!
hi, nice demo. i live in europe, can i plug the 12v adaptor into a socket in my house? the socket has 220v, if i cant, how do i lower the current? oh, can i order this pedal from pgs to all europe(i live in the iberic peninsule(spain/portugal)) or is it us only?, and if i can, do i pay a lot more? please help!!! tanks in advance! btw, do you sell anything that lowers the 220v and other stuff, if necessary(amperes, watts) to whatever i need to plug the adaptor and not destroy the beautyful pedal?
hi, very nice demo! im looking for the jimmy page like sound you get when you play ramble on with those 12au7s, is there any (cheap) tube amp that has that sounds like that? or can i just put those 12au7s in any cheap (+/- 500$) and get that beatifull jimy page sound? i'd really aprecciate your help! tanks in advance!
Does anyone know how well this pedal would work with a Mesa Dual Recto Road King? I'm looking for something that I can use to "boost" the dirty channels in my Mesa.
can tube pedals make a shitty solid state sound like a badass tube amp?i know thats a stupid question but this pedal sounds like the best distortion pedal ever
i dont want to take away from this pedal. but if you pluged into a twin reverb with a ts808, or a maxon od you would get great tone as well. my point being your other ingrediants have a lot to do with this tone.
at first when i saw this pedal, i was like wow a real tube version of a tube screamer, but the color is very misleading. this has much more cajunas then my 808, dont get me wrong it sounds very warm and nice, but this is reayy whaat u call disdrives, distortion overdrive,s very much like my fulltone ocd, i thought when i got that it would just also be like my ts 808. but i was wrong again. love ocd tho its like my marshall in box, and a hell of one @ that. and i know all pedals are not 808's
Sweeeet - but could I be bothered with messing about changing valves all of the time to get different tones - mmm - dunno - and it's uber expensive - great idea though for the tone hounds.
I purchased this pedal a few weeks ago from PGS and got it soon after. I've had this pedal for a couple weeks now and this pedal is a monster. The 12AX7's produce a monster OD tone. Thanks for doing such a great job on this demo video - you've really captured the sound of the Tube Drive - Phil (Effectrode)
Effectrode is the bomb. My favorite setup is with alternate lower output tubes in the #1 and or #2 position. Sounds fantastic in front of my THD bi-valve 30. Hands down the best OD I have ever heard in my life
The best tube drive pedal i have ever
heard!
Excellent tone!

My favourite overdrive pedal. I swapped in a couple of 12AU7s and it's a such a warm tone.
That thing sounds tremendous and is versatile, great for a tube combo like a peavey classic or fender deluxe.
I recomend the GE NOS 5965 with dual getter (12AV7 equivalent). These are medium mu tubes, which interact well with the Tube Drive for a very smooth response. There are bargins to be had on this tube on Ebay.

that ramble on cover is truly epic andy!!
4:47 did Brian may just walk in playing his rig?
WOW. awesome demo, i want this so bad!
This in front of a Blankenship TwinPlex would be mind bending.
Ramble On did something deep in my soul BTW.
I've tried this combination. Best results are substituting the top 12AX7 with 12AU7/12AV7

@ThisCoverBlows , try the link in the description :)
I gotta say, I dig the tone of this thing, but when I hit that little soccer ball in the bottem right corner then it really shows its awesome tone!
I'll second that - awsome job Andy
I want one for my Rhodes! That would be killer.
Rock n Roll is Dead for the intro is a genuine WIN
One of the best...so far! When do we get to hear the Rockbox Boiling Point?
love the strat sound with this pedal!
lovin the "ramble on" tones

I wish these were still in production. If anyone knows where I could pick one up, please let me know, thank you.
@acm12358 of the adaptor working on british 110 volts , you need the 110/220 volt converter/transformer
12V powered tubes?
A high price, should be called "Penetrode"
How important is the order of the tubes? Like would there be a difference in the results if I put a 12AU7 in the middle socket vs. the first one with two 12AX7s?
Fabulous sound with all 12AU7s... the others were good but not as nice as that. Personal opinion, of course!
Fantastic demo of what must be a great, if costly, bit of kit - £269 in the UK. But I want one.

option1
sweet honey overdrive from mad professor
option2
effectrode tube drive
option 3
both, how would these two sound together?
Im a pop rock blues player with a deluxe reverb reissue , stratocaster with tex mex
and an LTD emg 81 and 85
Id really apreciate some help since I need to put my wish list for christmas to get the money ontime.
PGS ROCKS!!!!!
Nice. If my spindoctor ever breaks, I might buy this instead of a Spindoctor II.
i think ive finally found a drive pedal i MUST have...guess i better save up.
@kungpow79 It's not even close to a tube amp in a box. The tube sound we're all after is as much, if mot more, a product of an overdriven power section, not just the pre-amp.
@daniludoilk it's Ramble on from Led Zeppelin
What is the "true amp voltage" in this case?
As if I recognized every song lol, that pedal sounds perfect for me :P
@ThatBigMetalhead are you kidding? sounds AWESOME.
0_0 I think I'm in love... Would this be a good fit on a pedalboard in which it supplies overdrive tones next to a more traditional tube 'distortion' pedal, e.g. the tonebone plexi?
thank you very much for posting this again thank you

The effectrode site says there's a 'helios fuzz' coming out.. That sounds even interesting imo!
"Mama Im Comming home" Cuz I'm Broke hhahaha. Amazing pedal.
So? All solid state pedals are MADE to have their chips swapped out. Otherwise, they wouldn't be put in sockets (just like this pedal). What's your point, if you have one?
What brand of 12AU7 and 12AV7 are you using as replacements? Is there a particular brand you would recommend for either?
Only if I werent running a Marshall Super Lead already lol. btw to anyone reading this (including PGS employees): I think my power tubes are going a tad dim on my Super Lead. so does this have to go in front of a tube amp? doesnt seem like it would.
hi, nice demo. i live in europe, can i plug the 12v adaptor into a socket in my house? the socket has 220v, if i cant, how do i lower the current? oh, can i order this pedal from pgs to all europe(i live in the iberic peninsule(spain/portugal)) or is it us only?, and if i can, do i pay a lot more? please help!!! tanks in advance! btw, do you sell anything that lowers the 220v and other stuff, if necessary(amperes, watts) to whatever i need to plug the adaptor and not destroy the beautyful pedal?
is 12Ax7 a high gain tube ?

can tube pedals make a shitty solid state sound like a badass tube amp?i know thats a stupid question but this pedal sounds like the best distortion pedal ever
man i feel dumb.... but anyway, does the sound come out of the tubes ?????
A few hundred volts. A lot of tube fx run at low voltage and people tend to believe that you don't get true tube benefits this way.
Is it better than the BK Butler Tube Driver?
wow thats really ripping that sound to shreds isnt it
what is the advantage of a tube pedal
Do u ship to FINLAND ?
thanks
Wow... tube-swapping-Overdrive-distortionorgasm...
argh... RAMBLE ON BABY!
whats the song at 2:07?
What's that song on 4:28?
@tommart123
you need to use to a 110v to 240v step up transformer and you'll be away. The transformer costs about £8 and you can get them on eBay.
@tommart123 If you want these boutique pedal try vintage and rare guitars
I can't imagine a pedal getting any more "amp like". I can't imagine paying $400 for a dirt box though. Maybe when I'm out of college :)
i dont want to take away from this pedal. but if you pluged into a twin reverb with a ts808, or a maxon od you would get great tone as well. my point being your other ingrediants have a lot to do with this tone.
I think its "Mama I'm coming home" by Ozzy.
at first when i saw this pedal, i was like wow a real tube version of a tube screamer, but the color is very misleading. this has much more cajunas then my 808, dont get me wrong it sounds very warm and nice, but this is reayy whaat u call disdrives, distortion overdrive,s very much like my fulltone ocd, i thought when i got that it would just also be like my ts 808. but i was wrong again. love ocd tho its like my marshall in box, and a hell of one @ that. and i know all pedals are not 808's
Best drive ever...
no ''Rock and Roll is Dead'' Lenny Kravitz 1996
sounds good
Make a video of your vibrato to show people what it should sound like...
Heard they were going on eBay for about 700 bucks!
one problem with this pedal, and that's that a vintage BK Tube Driver can be had for less.
Hell yes EVENFLOW!!!!
:)
1013301
b.b. king's vibrato, not good, what you smokin?
id buy this if i had $400
2:35 sounds like Hotel California ?
@marvelboy04 Don't forget Ozzy! Haha... Road to Nowhere solo.
Mommaaa im coming homeeeeeee....
Sweeeet - but could I be bothered with messing about changing valves all of the time to get different tones - mmm - dunno - and it's uber expensive - great idea though for the tone hounds.
another standout stompbox!!!
Mama I'm comin home
All along the watchtower
ramble on
All Down The Line .. yeahh
Rock n roll is death!
even flow!
Nice.
Great product. But....
Its more fun to build your own than buy one so I built my own tube distortion pedal.
Rad if you're rich lol maybe just take that money and put it towards a nice amp... I do have to say, that thing sounds amazing though.
Pearl Jam & Led Zeppelin, I love andy
SUENA PRECIOSO!!!
Y ASI TAMBIEN CUESTA JAJAJAJAJAJA!
$400 DOLAROTES!!!!
