- Olympian and world champion snowboarder Alex “Chumpy” Pullin tragically lost his life in 2020 while spearfishing in a free diving accident near the Gold Coast.
As the snowboarding community grieved the loss of the popular 32-year-old, Chumpy’s long-term partner, Ellidy Vlug, was left devastated. The couple had just bought their dream home on the Gold Coast and were trying for a baby.
After Chumpy’s death, Laura and Ellidy’s brother Dave came to Ellidy in her darkest moment to suggest posthumous sperm retrieval from Chumpy. 37 hours after Chumpy died, and with the consent of his family, a doctor successfully removed viable sperm.
7NEWS Spotlight reporter Denham Hitchcock spoke with Ellidy, their family and the couple’s friends, including legendary surfer Mick Fanning, over several months, creating a documentary that delivers a heart-warming and fascinating look at love, loss and miracles.

Chumpy seemed so loved by his parents as a kid. What a lovely upbringing. What a lasting impression Chumpy left on the world.

Omg what a beautiful gorgeous genital humble genuine human being... What a perfect voice. I truly hope and wish his voice gets to all of the ppl of the world.. Hopefully they have some music saved to share it to the world. His voice is insanely magical. I truly wish ellidy only the bat with her lil chumpy.. Idk how but I came across El’s IG a couple years ago and immediately clicked follow. I learned all about chump through her love for him. And now I get to learn even more through the eyes of his wonderful parents. Chump was ever so clearly a walking, snowboarding, surfing, singing legend. Genuinely lived life to the absolute fullest in the short time he was on this planet. It’s rare that I feel so much adoration for anyone I’ve never met but Chump was genuine and cool, and El and Minnie keep him alive every single second he’s floating around in another realm.
I cried all the way through this.. Ell you have a Long hard road ahead of you bring up that beautiful little girl on your own without her Dad. But it will be so full of love. God bless you both ❤️

i totally didn’t cry through that whole thing
it is a sweet story but such a complicated issue of consent...chumpys parents seemed a bit torn with the idea, i guess Elidy was his next of kin so they only needed her consent to get the sperm. i wonder what the parents would have said if they were the ones giving consent. i suppose it is up to the 2 parents to decide, and plenty of people have kids with people their parents have complex feelings about. he wanted a kid while living but it is a little differnt. i guess as long as he wouldve trusted elidy to bring the kid up how they wouldve and that the kid would do okay
there are plenty of kids with single parents but im not sure about this choice. t is kind of pressure for the kid, ive heard simular storys before where a kid is born into some legacy and always feels like a failure or over shadowed. kids need there own identity. if Elidy can realise her baby isnt chumpy, and not just a baby born to help her greve, but her own person then it should be okay but yea its a boundarie she will have to navigate.
Ellidy wasn't his nex of kin. If you read their book, it was Chumpy's parents who had to give permission/sign for the sperm retrieval
Chumps parents had to give permission for the procedure to go ahead which they did. She outlines in more detail her book & the darling, shine podcast 😊

I’m sure she is ecstatic to have part of her son here with her , however she had to bury her child . Nothing in the world could ever replace him and she looked utterly devastated. I don’t think it was unhappiness in regards to her grand daughter just incomprehensible pain .

The wealth these people have can’t be measured in money.
You don't need a million dollars for IVF and there's plenty of fatherless children. It's not uncommon either to collect a man's sperm after they've passed. In some cultures they did it specifically to carry on the lineage of that person
