    I lived for several years without utilities. You can survive if you try, that's what I tell everyone. your bed is a sofa. Very well insulated then on two sides right? Ok, now long johns. regular street clothes. A heavey hat, Winter coat, Then 2 blankets and 1 comforter. Hide your head under and leave a little passage for air. You will wake up sweating.

      Lol .. not at all. Its a very nice setup but almost anyone can do it.. if u dont know how just ask (almost anyone)
      Just keep hot wires taped off (and, or solar covered up so it doesnt make power) until youre ready to plug it all up.. very simple and fun todo. 4 wires in and out of the solar controller.
      Panels are Indian givers with out an SC lol... theyll give power, then take it all back at night .. draining your batteries worse than u began with lol .. also overcharge batteries and ruin them over time, pretty quickly.
      Be sure and have an SCC

    What a great inspiration! Thank you so much for the video. Very politely, I wanted to ask, how many batteries you think I may be needing for one 25000 btu window air condition (3000watts) and two Extractor Fan Blower (1040 watt for both) and an industrial humidifier (3000watt)? However the humidifier and fans will not run all day continuous, only the air condition would. The fan and humidifer, again, will run one and half hours every four hours. I would use all three applances only day times, say from 7am-8pm daily, no night usage of them. And I live in texas where the sun is super hot in the summers. Please advice me on how many batteries and panels I will be needing for my project. Again, thank you and for your response in advance.

    • @Geoff9001
      @Geoff9001 2 роки тому +5

      That's 7040 watts per hour those are on(just added them all up). So the next question is how many hours will you run each device? When in doubt, go for higher hours (aka duty cycle). If you have 100% duty cycle on 7040W that's 168,960 Watt/hour(or 168.96 Kilowatt/hour) for 24 hr cycle.. which is quite a bit. You always want to add a buffer on solar and make sure to include everything when figuring out your daily use. You can google your zipcode for how many "sun hours" there are in your location. Then for the battery pack, you need to decide how long you want to have power if you don't have any sun(I call it standby power). If your in Arizona desert, you probably don't need more than 1 day standby power. If you're in Northeast you may want 3 days standby power.
      Ex: If you have 5 sun-hours in your location then you should size your battery for 5X max rating of solar panels. And you want 2 days standby power. So lets assume you need 169Kw per hour(for everything you mentioned) 24/7 use(100% duty cycle). Battery would be 169Kw x 24 hrs x 2 days standby= 338 Kwh. Solar panels should be 169Kwh / 5 hr = 33.8Kw solar needed. Its a lot cheaper to oversize solar panels, than to have a big battery.. but you do need standby if you wish to remain 100% on solar. For batteries, Lithium Iron Phosphate are the preferred chemistry among a lot of tiny housers/RVers. UA-cam search "Will Prowse solar" for more information on batteries/solar and he does go over everything I just mentioned in one of his videos. He's got several solar systems at his house, and he's charging multiple electric cars from solar which is pretty cool.

    Nice job. Congrats. I did something similar once with $13 10' T-posts. That still up? The biggest threat to that set up is not nature, it's man.. trying to steal, destroy or report you.
    Long story (optional read).. but FYI. I've tested 450W AC with solar.. IMO, it's not worth it and it's better to adjust your life to where you live vs trying to seal yourself in an air conditioned box. Florida is hot and humid, but there are parts of Florida that are cooler at night and where sleeping with some USB fans is not uncomfortable at all. Florid has no winter a blanket or sleeping bag can't fix. No wrong way to live, but I'm taking a very different approach now with just shade and fans.. lots of fans .. IMO, Off-grid is a great opportunity to get away from couch life. I'm building a tiny 4X8 personal, screened in pod UNDER THE TREES. It's a couch, desk, bed and counter. Corrugated insulated roof, but otherwise open screened. USB fans super ventilate it. Idea is to cook, eat, work and hangout outside under the trees, but mostly I find something else to do between 11am and 3pm...that's the best time to go out , have lunch, do laundry, go shopping, etc.. The pod is basically to sleep, couch and surf.. which unfortunately is an American pastime now. A single 250W solar panel perfectly situated away from camp in direct sunlight will charge a 48v 50AH battery that is not only my only power source for fans and technology, but also drives an eBike 100 miles and will run my security camera year round. Anyways, off-grid in Florida in July and August is brutal so I would try to van life in the beach or mountains those months.

    • @marvinsalee7134

      I don't understand why you're 450watt ac didn't work out. As long as you have atleast 450watts of solar power while it's running I don't see how it wouldn't work if you have sunshine. I'm sure it would take a decent size battery bank to run it through the night but it's doable 4sure. I'd use about 800watts of solar panels so it could run and have enough power to charge the batteries for night time use.

    If I would do this I would run my panels in series to get approx 50 volts via solar into a MPPT charge controller. The batteries would be hooked in parallel for 24 volts. The inverter would be 24v.
    The advantage would be smaller gauge wire and more efficient charging… Big, high gauge wire for a 12 volt system will cost as much as pure sine wave 2000/3000 peak inverter. Furthermore in my experience the wire always seemed to heat under 12v systems at high loads as it is difficult to make low resistive connections. Otherwise good build.

  • @pstoneking3418
    @pstoneking3418 2 роки тому +3

    Keep in mind 10 amps charge at the batteries (12 volts) is only 1 amp or less at the inverter output (120 volts). They didn't say how many amps the air conditioner uses. But if the batteries were 12volt 200 ah. 2 in parallel would give him 400 ah. You should never take deep cycle batteries below a 50 % charge so you have 200 amp hours available plus whatever amps your getting from solar panels. Converting that 12 vdc 200 ah to 120 vac gives you approximately 20 ah of electricity. That equates to running a 1 amp load for 20 hour, or 2 amp load for 10 hours. But after those time frames the batteries will be only half their capacity and will require a full charge to get the best life out of your batteries.

      I see you understand how solar works. I don't see batteries lasting all night unless they're lithium and 300ah each. Lithium batteries can be discharge completely without any problems so he'd have all 600ahs available if they're 300ah each and I do think that may work

      @@marvinsalee7134 one misconception is the longevity of lead acid batteries, maintenance free labels are simply patched over the maintenance holes to prevent honest people who don't have the knowledge of how to boil their batteries from doing so and injuring themselves. In the solar community however, I think that this is less of an issue since safety has to be learned anyway to run the system. If you safely learn how to boil your lead acid batteries they can last you 75 years or more if you're lucky using the proper machine for it. Now weight and space is your main concern when using lead acid if you learn this. Which is not really an issue if you are a home owner. Lead acid for stationary, Lithium for portability. My problem is I have studied the batteries more than the solar itself because at one point I was considering making my own batteries because of how expensive that they can get. overall lead acid is safer. You can mix battery banks of different types by the way but it needs a certain type of combining circuit. You shouldn't combine them in the same bank however. Combo circuit is basically a fancy filter capacitor in a very basic version of a mppt controller yet they are not the same.

      He's not even using deep cycle, or the expensive life batteries.. hell hes not even using 3 or 4.
      Hes got a good get down there with that little setup.
      The secret is how many solar panels hes running.
      I got 3 of those cheap charge controllers and was happy to see someone else using them.. bought my first one Dec 2018 and my 3rd one last week. All from ebay for less than 16$ for this last, most expensive one.. others were 12$ each. They work great so far and like i say, i been usin em since late 2018.

    Makes sense because of the size of the building. 5000 BTU ac is supposed to cool 150 sqft. What size is that trailer 6'x10' ? So the AC only has to cool 60 sqft instead of 150 sqft... assuming he closes his doors. An AC is going to maintain whatever temperature it is set at, so if it takes 500 watts per hour to cool 150 sqft, would it make sense then that an area of only 0.4x the size would use approximately 200 watts per hour? He says at one point the controller is taking an input of 14 amps. Voltage from the solar panels I've been looking at recently is between 17-22 volts. 14x17= 238 watts 22x17=308 watts.

    • @pstoneking3418
      @pstoneking3418 2 роки тому

      @@curierfromxibalba1155 With say 5 amp at 120 vac draw equates to 50 amp draw on his batteries. I'd say his 2 batteries wouldn't last long even if they were each 12 volt 200 ah batteries. You wouldn't want to drain your deep cycle batteries more than 50% so you're only looking at about 4 hours of continuous running of that air conditioner. He said he had as much as 20 amps coming in from solar panels during a sunny day. That equates to 2 amps at 120 volts ac not including the loss to invert that power.

    1 horsepower = 746 watts of motor is 100 percent efficient single phase Walmart acs are only 50 percent efficient and probably have 1/4 horsepower motors. Depending on unit. So that wold be 1500 wats/ horsepower 1/4 horsepower needed to run ac. At 120 volts 375 watts/120volts = 3 amps@120 volts or 30 amps @12volts. If you use an inverter run ac it works more like a 3 phase motor and is between 70 to 90 percent efficient. This would mean you only Abe to put in 900 to 1200 watts to get same horsepower. Divide that by 1/4 horsepower and you would save the extra you spent on ac by needing less panels and battery’s.

    I don't think there's any reason A/C, refrigeration and freezers couldn't easily run off solar power because they have start capacitors, right? That's what provides the surge of power required to start a compressor, isn't it? And capacitors charge practically instantly so why do people assume they can't run cooling devices off solar?

    They installed a Pure Sine Wave Inverter 12V Input, Power 2500W, Output 120V.
    I also have a Victron Smart Solar Charge Controller, MPPT 100/30.
    When the electrician hooked up everything sparks began flying, the system got hot, and he has given up trying to set it up. I have no solar power now in my van, which is my home.
