- Chevrolet, Ky, coal camp in "Bloody" Harlan, almost abandoned now - once home to apprx. 800 people. I somehow managed to confuse a 2-lane road with an interstate & four lane. Also, scrip is the plural of scrip - not scrips. Other than that it's aces.
Wow. That first house to the left ( the old yellow one) in the last part with the chimneys was my Pappaw’s. 6 of us lived in that house and it had 2 bedrooms. They have tore it down recently and I’m really missin it. Poor and broke but happy times. My Pappaw has since then died too.
Thanks for commenting I love hearing the history of these communities
Hey Hunter DIESEL Blevins we might be related. My mother had family named Blevins. Weird though my grandfather on my dads side lived in Chevrolet
Hobert Allen wow!!
Hobert Allen you can check me out on Facebook and we might get too find out! It’s Hunter Blevins
Why did they knock all the houses down?
Great video, loved the dogs running by!
I was worried about them. Too little to be just strolling down the road.
My dad grew up in Loyall. My papaw worked for the L&N. I found an old Harlan Daily Enterprise article about my papaw that said he purchased the pulpit for the Baptist church in Chevrolet. I'm glad to see the church is still there.
Thank you for your videos. My grandfather became the town Barber in Harlan after a mining accident. He was a lay preacher in the coal camps, C. B. Buckner. My dad said he escaped from Harlan. His brother Bill Buckner worked for the State for coal truck safety. Thanks again, saves me a long drive. God bless you.
Thanks so much for the comment and for watching. Love hearing from folks with roots in the area.
That is the most kentucky thing i’ve ever seen hehe, the decorations, i live about 2.30hrs away from harlan
I live about 2 1/2 hours away too
The Appalachian Project that’s awesome! where are you from?
I’ve got an Aunt and two uncles buried on the hill there just down the road where my dad lived when he was young. He was there in 1940. My two uncles where young when they died.
Thank You Mr. Simmons For Another Fine Video! I Love Your Narration !!!
My Pap mined coal in Chevrolet, Kentucky. I still have Kinfolk in Harlan County.
You can always tell those Hollars in Appalachia, I'm in Western North Carolina Mountains not too awful far from Madison (Bloody Madison) there's no mistaking these Mtns.
My grandfather was born here very cool Thanks for the tour
Glad you enjoyed it
My mom and her family lived in Chevrolet in the lower part. Her maiden name was Farmer.
I know this is a old video..but my wife is from Harlan (Evarts) and I love the history of that place..go down there for vacation a couple times a year..I'm going to take that drive next time we come down there
it is well worth the effort, I love it there
Awesome, I grew up in the Evarts area!
Those cute little dogs looked like cute little coyotes.
I'm glad you said it. At first I wasn't even thinking dogs! 😂
My dad was born in this holler in 1946.
My dad was born in Chevrolet in 1939. His Dad was a coal miner there. Wooton/Wooten family name..
We are moving to Baxter. How far from there (522) is this place ?
Man those dogs were like "DINNER" when they saw you lol
I heard you never leave this place alive, you got lucky.
0:27 yeah buddy. The only reason I caught that is because I'm from Bell. Right off US 119.
Why did it take so long to figure out that the coal companies really had no concern for their workers? I have never understood the people of Kentucky and West Virginia who talk big game about loving the place but let coal companies destroy the environment and their lives.
Turn the camera sideways so people can see what you're looking at
I only had my phone with me that day, usually have a camcorder
Still haven't figured out how to hold a camera good Lord
It's apparently about as bad as your ability to figure out how to read the month and year a video was uploaded...
