Chopping Straw Into The Dairy Barn with Gehl 400 Chopper and International 1256

  • Old Man Winter has yet to show his face, which is fine with the Trinity Dairy crew. The cows are still going out onto pasture at night and we're almost into December. As nice as the weather is, soon enough the temps are going to drop which means the cows are going to have to start staying in the barn at night. That means the cows will need some bedding. Alan hooks up the 1256 to the 400 Gehl Chopper and chops our big squares of straw up into the barn. We end the video by remembering 3 family members we have recently lost.

Trinity Dairy was established in 2006, in Minnesota. Alan and Jennifer farm with their 5 children; Jessica, Justin, Jordan, Joshua, and Jason. We milk a mix of 33 Jersey, Holstein, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, and Ayrshire cattle. We also enjoy sharing our family's love of Draft Horses and using them for logging and other farm work. Dairy Farming in Minnesota can be challenging, but it's a lifestyle we really enjoy. Subscribe today to watch our small family dairy farm and family grow while continuing to thank our Lord for the blessings we've been given.

When I was growing up on the dairy farm back in the late 50’s, we did things like your doing with the chopper. I look back and it scares me now, trip and go into the chopper, over!!! Never thought of it then, we should have had an emergency shut off for the auger close…. Thx for the video…

Yeah, that's a good idea to use that chop straw for your application. I remember when I was a kid, the wheat that we had was taller back in those days... and the long stringy straw was difficult at times.
That was a very nice thing you did at the end of the video. To acknowledge who they are and the impact they had on your family's lives. That's a nice thing to do❤

Hi guys, sorry about losing people that are close to you. We also used chopped straw but we used to chop right in the field and then blow it up in the barn, I didn’t like the mess up in the barn though. We used to chop corn stalks right after corn picking and if it was dry enough we would leave the last three forage wagons full to the roof and just push them up in the barn for the winter. Times are changing pretty quick though. New ideas are changing everything , farms are getting bigger and bigger. Nice video, take care,🇨🇦👍🚜❤️

I have a 1890's family journal from DeKalb Co., IL where they talk about chopping the tops of the corn before picking when it was still green. Do you figure they would be feeding that to livestock or for bedding?

I used a WIC electric small bale chopper to shred newspaper for bedding freestalls. Had to be careful with the Washington Post supply, cows only wanted to come in the LEFT side of the Parlor if I used to much of it! 😂 Great video!

Folks don't see how good little farms like yours are. Big farms produce nothing but a lot of waste. No children, GMO corn and beans that we can't eat. And did l mention, ethenol that folks overseas say is ten times worse for our air then coal or curd oil. The big farm agenda is from Sociallist God haters. They shall receive their reward. So glad to see you still using that good old machinery. May you and your family have a blessed Christmas!

I can appreciate your thoughts and comments. I like small operations.
I also realize without large ones there would not be enough food production.

    • @mleppert8535
      @mleppert8535 6 місяців тому

Good morning! I must make mention that l didn't want my comment to seem hurtful to big farmers. But, mega farms don't produce healthy food. For over 50 years hassidic socialists that totally run our government have been bent on
Getting rid of the small farm family.
Now there are very few left in most
Of the US, and most of those are struggling or on their way out.
Big farms need to quickly heed
Christ's words and "sell all that they
Have and give to the poor" before it's
To late! There is one near Timber lake SD setting up young farm couples with land that he bought for
The cost he paid decades ago. That
      Is very remarkable these days!
But we are loosing so many people
Every day, and there isn't even a small fraction of new born babies!!!
Please folks wake up!!! Stop listening to these wicked people in
Government. Stop putting the children we have in socialist US schools. They are all the same.
Just stop doing what's wrong and Our Savior will have mercy, and spare us. Also don't listen to the Preachers that say we should be subject to this wicked government!
That is a lie! Read His word without
      The Zionist preachers glasses.
"He that hath hears to hear, let him
      Hear"

That is what we used for bedding. We blew it into a barn that is connected to the main barn I believe it was originally a square silo. Need to wear a dust mask when handling it coming out. Just a point of safety I really did not like your chopper setup. One bad slip into that chopper and it would not be good. Consider adding a railing on the chopper side of your wagon. It would not hinder slading the slabs to the chopper.

Sorry for your loss. Over 150 years of farming knowledge loss between the 3. Technology helps but not replaces experience that OJT can’t be learned from a book. Education has its place but so does sweat and an aching back.
