It is impressive what Kia/Hyundai had achieved in the last twenty years. The Niro is the proof they can push what we can expect from a mid-range car. The hybrid looks really good, I can't wait to see it applied to all their vehicles.

@13:20 To answer your question "Why would you connect to WiFi in your car?" it would manly be to update firmware on your car via your home WiFi instead of having to go to the dealership and do it.
Noah Cisneros Yes or you could connect (while not driving) to your hotspot on your phone for the purposes you said or maybe downloading maps for offline use.
while connected to your home network, can you also access the car by phone or other means to start the heating or cooling or other functions?

I am impressed! This car looks nice, inside and out. The blue one looks good, the interior is also nicely done with use of the white accents that brighten up the interior.
And apparently they managed to build a hybrid that works well and is also very frugal. That low consumption is quite something! Especially for this price they will give Toyota a good run for their money (especially with the Ioniq).
Kia/Hyundai has been making major steps forward for years now and they don't seem to be slowing down. This is going to be interesting..

Actually there is, since a few months you get 4.000 € off on any full electric vehicle and 3.000 € on any plug-in hybrid car. "Normal" hybrids like the Kia Niro don`t get any special treatment.

Hi Thomas! We tried out the Niro yesterday. It's a pretty nice car to drive. And i agree, it's simply, modern but great quality. Decent room for a family with luggage. And also starts from a decent private lease price too.

+Autogefühl Thomas, das Wifi wird fürs Navi gebraucht. Ohne das hat es keine aktuellen Stau und Wetterinfos, zumindest bei meinem neuen Kia so. ich verbinde es für lange Reisen vor der Fahrt immer mit dem Hotspot meines Handys.

Thomas- I bought the Niro LX, one step up from the FE, plus a safety package that includes AEB. After 6 tank fillups, I am averaging 54.x MPG, don't know what that is in L/100km, but it is above the US rating of 50MPG. I like the car very much so far. One thing you didn't mention is the Sport Mode on the transmission, which really increases power and steering if you need it.

I have the Kia Sedona minivan...200k on it and it's been great but mileage normal for minivan. Looking to get better mileage but for me it's all about if I can fit. I'm 6'4" and 300 pounds. I just went to the dealer and was amazed that I could get in and out very easily. Seat lowered and all the way back but was pleased. I had 2" above my head. I had plenty of room for both legs to bend and rest on the center console. I didn't feel cramped. All the videos I've watched show NO real spare tire only an inflation kit. The dealer says a spare tire is now standard at no extra cost. When the Sedona does, I'll seriously consider the Niro. I'll get the Touring with light gray leather and cloth with light blue contrast stitching.Los Angeles California

Really nice and fair review. I tried it few days ago. I drove it for 45 minutes (country roads and city) and I was really impressed by the fuel consumption (4,4 l/100) how smooth it drives and the general perceived quality. In my case it was really hard to notice when the combustion engine was on or off. My only dissapointment is that in Sweden the rear power socket is not available.

Just test driven the Niro very impressed test drove a Prius last week found it spongy rolled on corners a typical 1970's American car.
The Niro though does not do good milage like the Prius but as we do most of our driving in city the Niro should be economical more so than the Mini countryman 1.6 diesel we are getting just 35mpg to the gallon around town.
I will definitely consider the Niro a very impressive car.

I have road tested the Kia Niro 2 today, i have to say i am very impressed, i agree with your comments in your review. This could well be my new car.
Yet another outstanding review by Thomas ... very informative and entertaining. The vast majority of drivers without homes with private garages, a pug in electric vehicle is out of the question so a hybrid is an amazing choice for most. Love this mid sized SUV shape compared to the Prius. Really like the fact that they didn't saddle the vehicle with an anemic CVT. The hybrid is superior for people who do a mix of driving and in fact the more traffic heavy around town driving the better as that is where the hybrid really shines. Since Tesla refuses to make a hybrid, and the VW Tiguan isn't offered as a hybrid, this KIA NIRO is the idea alternative. If I can't get Christopher Walden as my GPS voice, perhaps I can get THOMAS to record the messages?!!!

As a Ceed (2014) owner I have to say I like this car. Interior looks like "better Ceed" :-). I like the hybrid technology idea in this car. Maybe one day there will be Sportage hybrid :-)

The leather used is obtained from animals that we already eat. Not wild animals :) So there is no saving of animals by avoiding leather use.

to be honest, although I'm fan of Kia, I didn't expect Nitro will be such excellent car (as it is their one of their first, if not the first hybrid car of this type and every hibrid car so far had some dealbreaker flaw. Consumption is great. I have also achieved officially stated consumption in real driving in my Kia (in my case it's 6.4 litres / 100 km, it's 1.6 126 hp naturally aspired engine). So Kia seems to be more honest with these stats than many other car manufacturers.
Plus interior is of great quality. Exterior leaves something to be desired though, but it's still better than most hybrids nowadays.

So you could use your phone as a wifi hotspot for the car.
It can connect to wifi networks so it can receive software updates over the air.

I think that with the wi-fi function you are supposed to use wi-fi hotspot on your smartphone to connect your car to the internet. I think that is a great solution because you don"t need special SIM card just to have the car connected to the internet, although I don"t know if infotainment system in Niro can make use of it.

The detail information is spectacular... but it would even be better if your conclusion in the end would be rated from 1-10 as 10 the best, like in terms of exterior design, interior, power, consumption, mpg, price range. that is displayed on the video itself and not just simply mentioned.

Good review! I agree with other commenters, current review format is great. Your videos are longer than standard, but it is just fine. Do you do a standard consumption loop or differ with different cars? It would be nice to get comparison statistics for different cars on same loop.

You use the Wi-Fi connection for the Navigation system for example. It then shows you radars and other things.

This car is unexpectedly a very interesting proposal from Kia on the hybrid-car market. I'm seriously interested to make a drive when it is possible in my country. The outside look is not as impressive as e.g. Toyota CH-R but it seems this car is quite resonable. I'm waiting actually for the above mentioned Toyota - it could be the main competitor for this Kia Niro. Please make a review of CH-R when it will be aviable on the market. This car stands out only because of the hybrid system which I like, hopefully there will be much more affordable hybrids in the near future and push out stinky diesels, but caremakers like VW for example, should really start producing hydrogen cars which would affordable for the public.

Wi-Fi is a good option. You can use it for transferring media data to your system.
Nice review, but you should have shoved it´s power in sportsmode. It really makes a difference, and overtaking is no problem then. You can switch easyly between the 2 modes :)
Kia make nice looking cars let down by old tech and fuel consumption but this new one looks a better prospect than their normal output.

Did you have a chance to drive the trim with 18" wheels? Other reviewers have made a point of mentioning a negative effect on ride comfort with the bigger tires. How would you compare road noise at highway speeds to say the Golf 1.8TSI or other cars in the class?

I testdrove the Niro with 18 inch wheels. Ride comfort was great, but some tire noise, and lesser fuel economy because og that. I would go with the 16 inch.
As for wifi, you can create a Hotspot on your phone and use it for the Internet and stuff on the car unit.
I just ask myself for what, I can connect via carplay etc. then I have internet anyway?

Very quiet. We have a q50 hybrid and I never miss hearing the 3.5 v6 coming alive but i guess if it's not an impressive sounding engine it's great that it silent.
Very nice review. You highlighted many of the positive elements of the Kia Niro. However, you did not use and review sport mode at all. I find sport mode rather dramatically changes and improves the driving experience, particularly in the city. Hope you can provide an addendum that presents the benefits of sport mode. :-)

I wish you gave some measurements eg. max length/height in cargo.
regen braking, would removing the foot from gas be enough to trigger it? or you really need the brake pedal.
dynamics, does it lean to much in fast curves or corners.
active safety, can you spec an adaptive cruise control? or just AEB
power socket, leaving a powerbrick hanging seems bad to me with its weight and ride vibrations, just put the longer mac cord.

Perhaps they think about people using their smartphone to create a wifi network, so you use the 4g from your phone to connect the car to. In Korea most phone contracts work with unlimited data so from that perspective it's kinda a cheaper solution than having to buy a separate simcard. :)
In your opinion, how do you think the Niro will fare at continuous speeds at +/- 120 hm/h for extended periods of time?

Does it recharge the batteries when you for example drive on the highway? I tried the Yaris (from Toyota), and I saw that when driving at higer spped, the battery recharges as well which I tought was a good feature.
