Fantastic incessant Marimba beat to this piece. This is so very different from most other music. Minimalist might get short shrift from died in the wool classical fans, but the players and singers here obviously liked it enough to give their all. Steve Reich is a genius and the world is a better place for him.

An amazing performance of a highly technical piece!! I wish this was in HD and remastered because it is the best version on the net so far! The conductor is precise and engaging. Desert music is a triumph and Reich is my hero forever.

Funny to see two of my former colleagues from the Monteverdi Choir singing in this. Neil Dalrymple and Suzanne Flowers. Recorded a decade before I ever worked with them. I have never sang this piece which has been a favourite of mine since I first heard it on LP at the age of 18 in 1988. I take my hat off to the total concentration and musicianship we see here. Although I would love to sing this I admit I would be TERRIFIED with only two Tenors and two Basses. Plus the whole thing is miked so there's nowhere to hide. Music of extreme complexity and mental endurance yes. But Reich gave us something completely new here because all the hard work is worth it. Compared to spending weeks rehearsing some serial atonal crap that fell into the dustbin of history. This music works and with the help of great musicians like these it really speaks to us.

This is the year I listened to this work on a cassette deck in my car as I drove through the Painted Desert from the south cliff of the Grand Canyon to the north cliff...still as profound as it was 30 years ago...thank you for uploading

Very nice. Less fuzzy than the "official" album version. Great playing and conducting here! European orchestras sometimes don't "swing" enough for Reich, but the Schönberg Ensemble sure do!

Wonderful performance, video and audio. Opens a drawer of long forgotten memories for me. So nice to be able to see this again.

Nice. Saw this concert at conservatory in the Hague they also did Tehillim and Steve Reich was there. And off course Reinbert de Leeuw.

@17:05 it sounded like dehydration started to get extreme. It sounds like ‘ok, you are going to die soon; get some water,’ because the slow attack of the strings and the chord it produced just sounded so urgent, important, and vital.

Sensacional. Parece trilha sonora de filme. É um deleite ouvir uma música de tão boa qualidade.

hehe, he created music of the 22th century without knowing it... I dont want to get to philosophical, but I really love the imperfection of humans trying to imitate phase shaped algorithm like music patterns. Like synthesizers could do it easily... It is totally awesome... Do you know what I mean? ;)m

This music to me is so sci-fi - the sort of soundtrack that should go with 'The Martian Chronicles.' Huge expanses of sound, with great distances. Wonderful music to me.

I think this tempo is a little too slow. I also do not like some of the singers' vibrato, which I feel has no place in this piece.
