US M40 Protective Mask

- US M40 Protective Mask/Respirator/Gas Mask used by the US Army from the 1990s until it was phased out a few years ago in favour of the Avon M50.
The M40 was a return to traditional mask design by the USA, after using the M17 Cheek filter mask previously for around 40 years, the XM40 designed in the 1980s eventually went into service a decade later as the M40, using NATO 40mm filters.
The mask itself is made from silicone rubber so needs a "second skin" protective butyl cover to work against blister agents.

The only thing I think of when i hear/see the M40 is the HECU from Half Life
My thoughts as well.
THIS IS SHEPARD
holy frickin heck
Thats why I want one...
@@nakelot6029 Amen Brother
Fun Fact :HECU Marines from HL1 were wearing it (thats why am here)
MY ASS IS HEAVY
WazzJr good luck! If you think finding the mask itself for a good price is easy, you’re in for a tough time finding the laser outserts! They’re damn near impossible to find. If you’re looking for an alternative I got green gel paper and traced and cut pieces to fit clear outserts and then just pasted them right on
Me too
As bad as these were because of the silicon, I still miss them. It's basically impossible to reasonably aim with a rifle in the M50's with both filters on, and when you remove the one on your firing side you're only left with a less than reassuring sealing valve... That and the new harness design is way more complicated than it needs to be. Oh, and changing filters is even more annoying now.
Rant done, great video man. Looking forward to the next one!
The C50 I think is a lot better than the M50, basically the same mask with 40mm ports like all the older NATO masks.
@@Weaponsandstuff93 i realized thats a reoccurring thing where they tryout new filter styles but ending up doing back to the 40mm again
I still use m 40
I've got one of these. My buddy was in charge of the CBRN warehouse in the West Virginia Marine base, and he scored me one. The M40's got replaced by a new type of mask, and as a result my buddy was ordered to destroy several hundred M40's. He... "misplaced" a few, one of which is now on display on my desk. Out of my twenty gas masks, it's by far my favorite.
Cool
TheArsonator why would they just make him destroy those masks
@@mysticcollector8258 because if they are out in the field and no longer going to be used its cheaper to destroy them to bring them back for storage.
They do this with Jeeps, rifles, ammunition, food, you think of it, they break it if its to expensive to ship back
@@therideneverends1697 maybe I could camp out and wait for them to destroy some other things
@@mysticcollector8258 Im shure it happens
A mask for yo mask
Yes
This is the one they issued my unit around 1992 or 93. It was a real good mask we liked it. It could be set up for left handed shooters. It gave better visibility. It was alot better for crew served weapons like anti-tank and anti-aircraft missles with the m17 you had problems getting on your sights .. It was also alot better for belt fed machineguns, you could get your cheek right up to the weapon without turning the weapon or your head sidewasy to get on the sights.
Thanks for the info, I wanted one of these for ages but sadly due to the US surplus export ban I had to wait until some turned up in Germany getting resold to evaluate it. I do think the M40 is really good mask, as well as the M9A1 from the late 1940s, it always seemed strange to me that the M9 didn't get a 40mm upgrade during the cold war as lots were still in US military service for units expected to work with chemical weapons.
@@Weaponsandstuff93 it probably wasnt the design that caused the change but the contract. Alot of the time a piece of equipment is made under a military contract and sometime after the contract is filled the guys making the stuff move on to making something else for someone else and when time comes for the army to buy more, they cant so they have to find someone else to make something for the and while they are at it they look at new designs that are available at that time.
Interesting that certainly seems to be the case with lots of stuff now, the UK has had a lot of issues where trials were conducted on various services and military equipment then the winner was disregarded anyway for the company that would offer a similar product or service at a far cheaper price, it was the reason the British army has had a lot of equipment recently they've had to sell off and rapidly replace because lots of it wasn't fit for service
@@Weaponsandstuff93 even wine i was in back in the 90s , the US army would kinda buy alot of staff on a whim and give it to the 101st Airborne to test it out for the rest of the Army. Alot of it was good but with maybe one flaw in it. One time they gave us a badass rucksack, we loved it but if you tried to pick it up and put it on by the straps it would break, you. Had to pick it up and put it on by the FRAME once you started pushing like 60lbs of load in it. We loved it other than that one weakness.. It was rejected for service.
This mask reminds me of 2 things
1. MTF-NTF unit from SCP CB with orange lenses
2. HECU
And S.T.A.L.K.E.R Mercenary mask

SCP-173 has been successfully recontained.

Sweet dude i look up to you in gas mask collecting, my gandfather recently passed away and in his will gave me the mask that he wore. Keep up the amazing work
Sorry to hear about your loss, but any idea what mask it is?
@@Weaponsandstuff93 sure it's the M40A1 and i recently asked this question in anouther video in hopes you would see it but i just got a GP-5 gas mask and a new filter came with it and I was wondering if it is safe, do you have any advice?
Nice video and mask, my friend got one in boot camp.
Cool
We used that when I was in the US Army. Put the harness to the front, so you can push the mask to your face, then pull on the harness. Thats what that little pull tap is for on the harness.
Interesting thanks.
I had the pleasure of using the m40 when I was in the United States Army. Honestly compared to most masks I’ve used it’s easily on par with the Avon fm12 as far as ergonomics are concerned.
We heard you liked masks so we made a mask for your mask
I just got one of these masks and before checking it out that much I watch this video…after you mentioned the butyl cover I thought I should buy one too, but when I looked at my mask again I realized that it already had one on when I bought it lol
Man your like the only guy that i know that has all the information that i need
Pretty cool, maybe (might be tedious) but what if you did a camo, helmet and gas mask comparison between the NATO allies and Warsaw Pact like a Cold War showdown just a idea kinda like what Dragon Man does on his channel,
I don't have all the gear but I could do something like that.
Wanted one of this badly, now itll prolly be impossible to come across one for a boulder headed individual like myself
Same
That's Adrian Sheppard's gas mask from half life opposing forces
It's better to have protection than no protection. I agree with how it has some flaws and you learn from those to make improved ones like the m50
My unit was still rocking these even thought the rest of the Army was issued the M50. That drinking tube is always gonna be poking you in the lips, but it somehow goes from infuriating to endearing an a weird way. I cant explain it.
The second skin may sound absurd, but consider this- it is also a sacrificial layer to help protect the mask from abrasion. Also, in the mid 90's the mask had a slight redesign, followed by a later redesign of the second skin. I suspect that is why yours is not fitting properly at the bottom. Mine fits perfectly, as both it and the mask were made in the 2000's
Bought a barely used one from my local shop for 47$ and it came with a new filter, the bag, and voice amplifier.
Greatest gear find ever.
Too bad no second skin or manual.
Thanks for the review.
That's a great deal good find

I bought one for 30 bucks off a buddy who was army now I’m glad to have it
Centaur Montano got mine for 120 back in March, glad I did, now they’re going for 2-300 even on eBay
Would be interesting to see a m40 and m40a1 comparison video
well actually i’m pretty sure the difference is that the M40 is issued with a good with the sewn in second skin whilst the M40A1 comes with the universal second skin and quick diff hood
Good find M8 congrats
Cheers
The most legendary gas mask ever...
Bought one of these recently as well. I have the A1 version of the second skin that has the chemical hood ridge near the edge of the rubber like the S10. Unfortunately, the actual exhale valve under the valve cover was missing, so the mask is technically unusable at the moment. Fortunately, it wasn't hard to find a listing for replacement exhale valves.
Yeah normal umbrella masks will fit and work with most masks.
Valves even.
i want to wear this when i go shopping
Suburbannite I have, didn’t get too many weird looks... I think
On thanksgiving my uncle gave me his mask the m40
Cool
I managed to snag one on a discount just a few days back, 20% off so it ended up being a decent price! Intact, including a radio microphone.
Can this mask be used for airsoft games? Will it cause much breathing discomfort?
@@hgf7enter The breathing resistance isn't too bad and it doesn't feel too fragile, make sure to use outserts if you do ever use it. But with how expensive it is lately, I wouldn't recommend using it for airsoft, honestly. Not worth the risk!
@@havocman3725 Thank you for your answer. Two are 200 dollars and they are both brand new and have c2a1 filters. If necessary, I can use it by removing the filter when using it in a war game or by opening an air hole in the filter. I want to use this mask instead of using normal glasses and a mouth mask, it is a very charismatic and nice mask.
@@hgf7enter 200?! I would wait for one that would be like, maybe 80-125 at the most! But hey, your choice!

do you have a full face visor BM-1423 gas mask?

hey, there, is there any cheap Geiger counter you can recommend?
Maybe a modern Soeks one if you can find it for around £100.
where do you buy your gas masks at?
nadenle eBay
I was looking for a gas mask with support for dual filters. Can this be modified by taking the blanking plate out? Not sure if it would damage the mask or not.
If you have special tools you can remove the blanking plate
Since it's a double filter mask. If you only have 1 filter. How do you block the other side since well it looks kinda exposed
Well it comes with the blanking plug, so you leave it in.
Right now less than a 150€ is impossible
Yes sadly lots of price gouging due to Corona.
Does that filter go on both sides
The Philippine Marine Corps got about 1,000 of these through the Mutual Defense Treaty. I still feel like the M40 is better than the M50 because it's easier to change the filters and is more affordable for many Countries that are on a budget.
M50 is a much better mask in terms of build quality, M40 is a better mask in terms of 40mm filter, FM12 would be the best of both worlds really.
Is This the same one that Stalker Spetsnaz use ?
The ones the Mercs use in STALKER is the XM40.
The spetsnaz also use the XM40
I got an M40 off Ebay. It didn't come with a cover for the right threading. It's just an open screw-cap, for some reason. Any thoughts on where to find a replacement? Or a D.I.Y. fix? Otherwise I would need to use two filters at once for a proper seal.
eBay for parts or sealing it with a tape. However tape probably wouldn’t hold very well.
Retro Toast I did try using Saran Wrap, and that seems to work pretty well to create a reliable seal.
Scott Brady if it works then it works but I think upgrading from Saran Wrap would be a good idea for a long term solution
How much did you pay for it?
Have you found out why your m50 valves don't seal properly, because mine seal automatically like your Scott GSR.
As about a hundred people pointed out, early M50's used a different valve design that was replaced quite quickly.
Would it be possible for you to review the PMK-3 at some point within the future?
Maybe
Does the m40 have an option for dual filters
Yes
I know this isnt the same mask, but are you familiar with the msa millenium? I believe the us military used it a few years back but i cant be sure. Anyway, would you happen to knowbwhat filters the msa millenium use?
It's 40mm NATO I have the MCU 2P which is almost the same mask.
@@Weaponsandstuff93 could it use the shalon 4a1 filters or no?
If you NEED another filter I can send you one. I have 2 spairs. A significant percentage of the us military is extremely allergic to butyl rubber. I say significant but it is only like 0.5 precent. I amn the M17 days they would have to be issued the mc/u2p. And knowing the us military they were likley never issued. It is not the best mask but it is ok
Why would I need another filter?
Orion69North no, they are C2/C2A1 filters used in the 90s and aren’t Warsaw Pact made
