so important to know the difference between friendly critters and harmful ones. i noticed some time ago that i had a few of these worm like creatures moving along the glass. my first thought was planaria, so i ordered no planaria from amazon and some traps. later on i found out that they were actually rhabdo cilias and detritus worms. (pretty small ones). but now i have a hydra infestation so i guess it wasn't for nothing haha
To help with detritus worms use a glass shrimp feeding bowl to feed your shrimp in, then after about 10-15 minutes take it out and it will prevent lots of food getting into the gravel and decomposing.
Better yet, why have gravel in the first place?? I got rid of gravel years ago and only use ultra fine natural sand! I got sick and tired of using a gravel vacuum, watching fish waste and uneaten food settle down into gravel and rot so I cleaned it all out!! The food sits on top of the sand where fish and shrimp can now eat it all, and Cory and Rsbbit Snails burrow around in it as well. Current from the filter sweeps across any waste and the filter now does a better job of cleaning as well.

Years ago i had natural planted aquariums with all the different little critters which i just group together as "the pods". i then noticed the little white flat worms and just thought "cool" another life form, but my friend's were more alarmed and wanted me to take action and get rid of them since they were Planaria...which i told them it wasn't since they didn't have the arrow head....and besides...who cares ? i didn't have anything in my tank except snails and they all got along...swimmingly ! i did want to find out about what they actually were, but to no avail. One suggestion, though: instead of resetting the tank, i would suggest adding into the tank a school of 10 tetras and a couple of corydoras for a 20-gallon tank. Leave them there for a week or 2 with minimal feeding. They will get rid of most pests naturally. I ve had some issues with leeches, for example, and i saw with my own eyes, tetras in group grabbing the leech from various sides and tear it apart. Hungry fishes are really evil. I have a planted tank with lots of shrimps, tetras, corys and snails and i have to grow scuds separately because they won't last 1 week in the tank without extinction.

I put that duckweed in all three of my tanks. Smh I could cry right now.
You have NO IDEA what kind of a MESS Duck Weed is and when I see this, it tells me one thing! You obviously never had Duck Weed or as we call it @uck Weed and have no idea whst it is🤬. In ANY tank it is a TOTAL DISASTER🤬🤬. I didn't put it in by choice but instead purchased fish from an individual who had it. It TOTALLY takes over and you will end up with an inch thick layer on the surface in a short time. Plants? Your plants will all die because you will find it blocks out 99.9% of any light and now your aquarium will be in total darkness. Shrimp tanks, Duck Weed is a total disaster because when your forced to remove this GARBAGE, what do Shrimp do? They cling to it looking for food and you will see them walking along under it. While removing this garbage you will lose Shrimp!! I slide my hand along the surface and as it bunches up I lift my hand and the @uckweed out hopefully without Shrimp, and keep doing this until I can start seeing though it and then dip a net along the surface and skim it off. I lower the net slightly into the water so it floats in the net and check for Shrimp in the net as well. Shrimp DO NOT EAT IT and it is like a cancer that multiplies out of control. I also use a surface skimmer that draws it off the surface as well and I use a Magnum 350 canister filter with a clear canister and this way I can see if any Shrimp or fry are in the filter. Those who put it in, obviously don't know what they are doing!!
This was great. I got 'vegetarian' leeches in my patio pond last year from the floating plants I got at the Garden store. Not harmful, but way too creepy! This year I'm just getting my floating plants from my indoor tank. I don't breed shrimp for sale, so I at least keep a few Dwarf Rasboras & baby Endlers in my tanks so all this stuff gets 'et.
I have seed shrimp in my cherry shrimp tank. I panicked thinking they were scuds, but now I’m convinced they are seed shrimp. Hope they are safe for my shrimplets that are going to be dropped any day now.

Ever swim in a lake infested with leeches? They are a parasite, like many politicians and cling onto you with a sucker mouth and draw blood. They attactch to fish, just like gill flukes and live off the host. They are constantly sucking out blood and body fluids and a clue you have them is you will see fish swimming against gravel or sand attempting to rub and scrape them off. The fish will always be aggitated and upset and won't do very well.
If you buy homebred shrimp from a reputable hobby breeder, you'll likely skip most or all chance of having to deal with a shrimp disease. The shrimp diseases are likely on newly imported shrimp from Asia, its the way they are farmed

My new shrimp tank is infested with B. Weberi leech! They do kill shrimp, I saw it happen. They are impossible to get rid of and live for many months without a meal. They had to have come from the plants from Aquarium Co-op. I did quarantine the plants and treat the plants with hydrogen peroxide and a salt dip before adding them. I’m so angry a company who knew they had these would send them to their customers. Complete reset, what am I going to do with the shrimp I put in there before noticing these things?
I recently bought rotala rotundifolia from a aquatic store and started noticing a white leech. I figured it may of leeched onto the hitchhiking pond snails or the plant.
I almost think I have all of them but I’ve had an extremely heavy tank get taken down and every plant dead and everything was dead in like a week when is super infested what can burrow through rocks and use them like armor?
I just notice some white worms crawling on a glass in my tank (and some swimming thru the water) and I know those string like were ditirious worms, but on my glass was also those more "chubby" ones, kinda looking like tiny slugs. I panicked that those are planaria, I took some photos with my micro lens on. They have an oval shape and I didn't notice black dots on their head, so probably not planaria. They also mostly chill on glass were is more algea, so... Are my shrimp safe? (Probably)
My sister had those black leeches come in on her rabbit snails and one was killing her snail and so she removed her rabbit snail that was dying and put him into an aquarium salt bath for just a few minutes and boy those leeches let go of that snail and she said the snail popped his head out for the first time since she got him and she put his leech free body back in the aquarium, she fed him first with some algae tabs and by that evening he was climbing the glass! 5 leeches were on this one poor rabbit snail and they would of killed him if not for the quick action of my sister. When she saw one in the water, she quickly removed all her fish and snails and put them into a temporary tank and she treated the tank with aquarium salt and left it... it didn't take hardly any time at all until she saw all the dead leeches floating.. after that she cleaned the tank, and changed the substrate to ensure no baby leeches were left behind and she has never had another issue. Now, for preventative measures, if she buys wild caught rabbit snails, she just gives them a quick aquarium salt bath and isolates them for a few days to ensure they are leech free. However, usually there is little to no need after the salt bath, she always finds them floating in the bath as they let go of the snail right away. ***Disclaimer*** I know that she uses a specific amount of salt for the baths as the salt baths can cause harm to your snails so I would research how much is safe for your snails.
I introduced new shrimp, to my tank, since adding them I've had 3 die, including 1 that was not newly introduced. I have since seen worms, but they look long and thin like the ones you say aren't harmful. I can't see anything else wrong with the shrimp, and my water levels are fine. What could it be, and what can I do?
I've had a cyclops bloom in my daphnia tank, they're pretty nasty. The entirely wiped out the entire daphnia colony in a matther of days. Thousands of individuals killed just for fun, they weren't even being consumed. Lately I spotted them in my shrimp tank and I'm worried they're going to attack baby shrimp too.
So glad I watched this 2 months ago cuz I bought moss balls and they had scuds in them maybe like 30 of them and I thought they were cute but I remembered this video so I put the moss balls in boiling water lol

Yep, about restart, but maybe she suggests, remove all your lovely shrimp and other animals, then just heat your aquarium with heater, go to 33 or even 35 celcius, hope all scuds die
You forgot about dragonfly larva. I had a single one that came in with a plant and it ate all my shrimp for two years before it hatched into its adult form and I never even knew it was in there
great video, i didnt know what the fatty was about cuz i do see them and they crawl around faster than detritus worms too, but now i know! i guess my shrimp shrimp deaths must be "nitrate poisoning" in this case since i tested regularly 20-40ppm and i wasnt sure if it was too much. I may have been slowly killing them through toxicity so i slowly added plants and maybe water changes will help establishment. Man the internet stuff you read is so useless when you need facts to get things working properly lol, anyways keep it up!
I wish I'd watched this video before. I saw a couple of worm-like organisms and after looking up detritus worms and planaria, they looked more like planaria to me so I picked them up with a q-tip (they were near the surface, on the glass) and got rid of them. I didn't realize that some type of detritus worms look a bit like planaria. I mean the head looked round and the body was pale, kinda milky white, but since they were so small I didn't want to take the risk of leaving two planarias in the tank just because they kinda looked like detritus worms and I thought they were harmless. The good news is I doubt only two of them got into my tank so I'll be more careful if I see one again.
I think you mean scutariella japonica. Please google for images. You do salt dip on the shrimp and you have to remove all molts or else it will keep reinfesting your shrimp
In my country, Vietnam, we have a lot of Leech Barbronia Weberi. People say it eats baby shrimp. I never see it happen by my naked eyes but I can tell baby shrimp in my tanks decrease significant after they appear (As I belive they just eat few days ages baby shrimp only). One of my small tanks Cubic 25 has no baby shrimp grow
I start over. Discard everything because they can hide in anything including filters wood substrate plants etc. Net and rinse is not enough. Once your shrimp population is booming, so will your scuds. Scuds will outcompete your shrimp and baby shrimp and even attack shrimp and baby shrimp.
About Scud, i want to share experience against them, try to make the pH around 5 and keep bellow 6 for a while, most caridina shrimp can adapt to it, do not feed the tank for a while, and just wait.... After one or two weeks, all Scud would have big problem, look like they can not adapt with low pH and low TDS of water, but the snails too will start have a problem
That’s really interesting, thanks for sharing. They definitely can survive in a low pH though because I had hundreds of them in one tank with a pH in the upper 5 ph... Well if you have a large infestation I don’t think that you can trust any method to completely remove all Scuds, its easier to reset the tank
For scud, I will advice you to put guppy or other fish, so they can eat them, but first move your shrimp to other tanks first.. for the seed shrimp is the most problem of all, we can not destroy them by adding fish, fish won't eat them.. if we restart the tank it will appear one day, because they have laid their egg in the tank glue..

First time I saw a scud I did not think it was cute. I thought it looked like a crack head running from plant to plant before diving in them. What's my rasboras refused to eat him.

if its looks like a sperm. planaria it is. Not harmful to me. my tank thrive with them co exist. used to nuke them all but after a couple month they come back. so ill keep it too. its indicate your water parameter is fine but need to vacuum the gravel or any decaying plant. just me two cents from my experience
Hello! Im new to cherry shrimp and have 2 adult cs with these weird white worms attached to their undersides and backs... they look like ditrus worms but obesly not. they don't seem to fit anything here. If anyone has any idea what there are let me know! Thanks😊
no planaria is the answer for that. use half of them. and vacuum the dead out. do not exceed 25% water changes. care for the parameter. RCS not a picky shrimp
Don't be ugly. Some of us keep medical leeches as fun aand odd pets! 😚 Leeches do not eat shrimp. However they could conceivably attach themselves to larger fish species.

Planaria definitely attack healthy shrimp I've had them once and dealt with them quickly before they got out of hand. I noticed on one of my shrimp wipe bumps and it was from getting stung by the planaria which would probably cause the shrimp to die from stress had I not treated it when I did when. It was going up and down the glass but luckily it's easy to treat and I didn't lose any shrimp from them

I had leeches in one tank, yes they are impossible to kill. Only way is literally start a new tank with nothing taken from the old one.

My sister had those black leeches come in on her rabbit snails and one was killing her snail and so she removed her rabbit snail that was dying and put him into an aquarium salt bath for just a few minutes and boy those leeches let go of that snail and she said the snail popped his head out for the first time since she got him and she put his leech free body back in the aquarium, she fed him first with some algae tabs and by that evening he was climbing the glass! 5 leeches were on this one poor rabbit snail and they would of killed him if not for the quick action of my sister.
When she saw one in the water, she quickly removed all her fish and snails and put them into a temporary tank and she treated the tank with aquarium salt and left it... it didn't take hardly any time at all until she saw all the dead leeches floating.. after that she cleaned the tank, and changed the substrate to ensure no baby leeches were left behind and she has never had another issue.
Now, for preventative measures, if she buys wild caught rabbit snails, she just gives them a quick aquarium salt bath and isolates them for a few days to ensure they are leech free. However, usually there is little to no need after the salt bath, she always finds them floating in the bath as they let go of the snail right away.
***Disclaimer*** I know that she uses a specific amount of salt for the baths as the salt baths can cause harm to your snails so I would research how much is safe for your snails.
I introduced new shrimp, to my tank, since adding them I've had 3 die, including 1 that was not newly introduced. I have since seen worms, but they look long and thin like the ones you say aren't harmful. I can't see anything else wrong with the shrimp, and my water levels are fine. What could it be, and what can I do?

I've had a cyclops bloom in my daphnia tank, they're pretty nasty.
The entirely wiped out the entire daphnia colony in a matther of days. Thousands of individuals killed just for fun, they weren't even being consumed.
Lately I spotted them in my shrimp tank and I'm worried they're going to attack baby shrimp too.

Yep, about restart, but maybe she suggests, remove all your lovely shrimp and other animals, then just heat your aquarium with heater, go to 33 or even 35 celcius, hope all scuds die

You forgot about dragonfly larva. I had a single one that came in with a plant and it ate all my shrimp for two years before it hatched into its adult form and I never even knew it was in there

great video, i didnt know what the fatty was about cuz i do see them and they crawl around faster than detritus worms too, but now i know! i guess my shrimp shrimp deaths must be "nitrate poisoning" in this case since i tested regularly 20-40ppm and i wasnt sure if it was too much. I may have been slowly killing them through toxicity so i slowly added plants and maybe water changes will help establishment. Man the internet stuff you read is so useless when you need facts to get things working properly lol, anyways keep it up!
I wish I'd watched this video before. I saw a couple of worm-like organisms and after looking up detritus worms and planaria, they looked more like planaria to me so I picked them up with a q-tip (they were near the surface, on the glass) and got rid of them. I didn't realize that some type of detritus worms look a bit like planaria. I mean the head looked round and the body was pale, kinda milky white, but since they were so small I didn't want to take the risk of leaving two planarias in the tank just because they kinda looked like detritus worms and I thought they were harmless.
The good news is I doubt only two of them got into my tank so I'll be more careful if I see one again.

There are leeches that kill snails specifically- I had a tank that my mystery snails died suddenly and it was a snail leech. Eek!
I am having problems with a parasite that lives on the shrimp like in the nose area. Have you had problems with these? I've lost a few shrimp to this.
I think you mean scutariella japonica. Please google for images. You do salt dip on the shrimp and you have to remove all molts or else it will keep reinfesting your shrimp

In my country, Vietnam, we have a lot of Leech Barbronia Weberi. People say it eats baby shrimp. I never see it happen by my naked eyes but I can tell baby shrimp in my tanks decrease significant after they appear (As I belive they just eat few days ages baby shrimp only). One of my small tanks Cubic 25 has no baby shrimp grow

I start over. Discard everything because they can hide in anything including filters wood substrate plants etc. Net and rinse is not enough. Once your shrimp population is booming, so will your scuds. Scuds will outcompete your shrimp and baby shrimp and even attack shrimp and baby shrimp.

About Scud, i want to share experience against them, try to make the pH around 5 and keep bellow 6 for a while, most caridina shrimp can adapt to it, do not feed the tank for a while, and just wait.... After one or two weeks, all Scud would have big problem, look like they can not adapt with low pH and low TDS of water, but the snails too will start have a problem
That’s really interesting, thanks for sharing. They definitely can survive in a low pH though because I had hundreds of them in one tank with a pH in the upper 5 ph... Well if you have a large infestation I don’t think that you can trust any method to completely remove all Scuds, its easier to reset the tank

For scud, I will advice you to put guppy or other fish, so they can eat them, but first move your shrimp to other tanks first.. for the seed shrimp is the most problem of all, we can not destroy them by adding fish, fish won't eat them.. if we restart the tank it will appear one day, because they have laid their egg in the tank glue..

if its looks like a sperm. planaria it is. Not harmful to me. my tank thrive with them co exist. used to nuke them all but after a couple month they come back. so ill keep it too. its indicate your water parameter is fine but need to vacuum the gravel or any decaying plant. just me two cents from my experience

no planaria is the answer for that. use half of them. and vacuum the dead out. do not exceed 25% water changes. care for the parameter. RCS not a picky shrimp
Don't be ugly. Some of us keep medical leeches as fun aand odd pets! 😚 Leeches do not eat shrimp. However they could conceivably attach themselves to larger fish species.

The tinier the better with lots of plants. (Example chili rasbora) But keep in mind they will still eat newborn shrimp whenever possible.
I have galexy rasboras and a dwarf honey guoarmi but they eat all food for shrimp
Planaria definitely attack healthy shrimp I've had them once and dealt with them quickly before they got out of hand. I noticed on one of my shrimp wipe bumps and it was from getting stung by the planaria which would probably cause the shrimp to die from stress had I not treated it when I did when. It was going up and down the glass but luckily it's easy to treat and I didn't lose any shrimp from them
