  • The Düsseldorf International Airport H-Bahn SkyTrain Monorail is a attractive and modern suspended transit system. It was developed and build by Siemens and opened in 2002. The ride is smooth and quiet.

    This is the best video I've ever seen of the SIPEM Monorails. Thanks, Luke! I really wish Siemens hadn't pulled out of this market. Their's is by far the best looking of the suspended monorail offerings out there. A very evolved and well engineered design with a minimal ground footprint.

      Thanks Lain, I would like to see more of these monorails too! This would have been perfect for Niagara Falls!! The design of the monorail makes it practically impervious to show and ice!

      The Chinese company Sky Train has taken up the technology and already has orders for new lines

      Many studies have been made on rails below or above the cars. I am from Wuppertal. The first electric rails above monorail I believe. Cost, stations, switches are the challenge. Noise is an issue. Siemens know what they are doing. If they pull out there is a reason.

    not intersecting with traffic, the guiding system not as much affected by corrosion as rails on the ground, this is pretty great tbh :D

    That's a great opening shot.
    In the time-lapse run through it looks they have either allowed a lot of space to overrun the platform OR there is enough space to run four car trains. However the mid station doesn't seem to have similar capacity for expansion.

      Tim J. I believe the extra room at the terminus station is to park a train there, similar to a pocket track. A train can be stored there temporarily without obstructing normal operations.

      Luke Starkenburg thanks Luke. As soon as I read your reply I realised they can vary service frequency to match demand.
      There are a lot of moving parts at those station with the mini walkways folding down. Is the gap so large that this is essential? I hadn't seen this on any of the Japanese hanging monorails.

    little englander here, manchester has a tram system which frequently breaks down 😖. connectivity between transport hubs is very slowly imoroving. But you could say 50yrs b4 a good monorail like that mite appear. Mind you if you lived in london, transport is top drawer. Its to hell and damnation with rest of the country.

      I always think a subway or elevated system is better than trams and light rail. Mixing trains with autos and pedestrians and bikes causes accidents.

      It connects the airport to a nearby carpark and also the airport train station.

      al meggs this is a great monorail! I hope it gets built elsewhere as well. It would be neat to see this in a snowy climate where the protected wheels (bogie) is important.

    I saw a video here on YT of the same technology being used in Japan. The only difference I could see is that this particular Sky Train cars seems a little shorter then the Japanese model. And in Japan this seems to be used where nothing else could be used because of existing infrastructure (mostly narrow roads and houses taking up every square inch of land) that're already there. Here it looks like there's plenty of land with plenty of room to have went almost anyway with any technology the Gov't wanted. So that's interesting to me that they went with this technology in Germany instead of something more...conventional.

      The Sky Train here in the Video connects all Terminals A, B and C with the the train Station for trains out of other Citys near by. Because this train Station is a bit away from the Terminals they used this System. The Skytrain comes every 5 minutes i think and is completly independed from traffic on the road or other things which could lead to delays. This way it is guaranteed that everyone arriving from neightbour Cities by train can get in 10 min to the Terminals to get his flight. There is also a direct s-bahn connection to the Terminals and they are building a subway too right now, but these two are connected to the Düsseldorf central station and not the Airport's train Station where most people arrive

    THIS is what Denver International Airport should have invested in, instead of the problem ridden ground based Rail Trains. we can't have nice things in Denver. too much graft.

      Regular rail systems are so much better at almost everything, except for specific circumstances like this, at an airport or atop a river or something. So I was gonna tell you that you are wrong, but you are actually right. When something needs to be built over bunches of roadways and has to be boarded easily at terminal level, this system is amazing. So in short, I agree with you.

    What is the top speed? Length of this system?

      fairly short and not that fast. The line starts at the airport train station, over to the airport car port and than to 3 different parts if the airport itselve.
      As all those points are not super far from each other high speed is not required. There was no room forba regular rail line and this kind of monorail can do tight turns at higher speeds than a regular train. And the direct connection is a lot faster and compftable than a shuttle service. So the monorail is a perfect solution for this scenario.

      Mik Moen I think that's because the video was sped up. However you really can hear such screaming here in Seattle on the (current) northmost leg of our light rail system between Capitol Hill and the University of Washington station.     luke starkenburg, the road network is diabolical, cycle network improving, trains overcrowded. to much privatisation and no investment as private companies want govt money to fund operations
