Both sides talking about how this is all unfair to the students-- my instructors did not care at all about the students last term; I ended up writing a 16 page problem report, which I sent to dean/chair (who probably don't care,) about how the instructors just phoned it in last term, didn't care about us, didn't properly teach anything. It's like they unofficially already went on strike last year. This is so despicable; I had to fight and fight and fight to get funding to enroll in a graduate level program, only to have it be a complete nightmare headache, joke, waste of time-- all because "teachers" feel like they are underpaid.. hey, guess what, at least you have a job! Which I don't... which is why I took the program.. and I'm pretty confident that I'm NOT picking up the skills I need to actually find gainful employment after all this mess is over. Despite the fact that the instructors gifted me (and I'm assuming the other students) A's and B's.

      1. We didn't want a vacation. We had just come back from a 4 month summer break (which is far too long to be out of school IMO). The school year had just started, and we were ready to learn, not waste even more time.
      2. The whole thing happened in secrecy. The negotiations between OPSEU and CEC started in July, but we weren't informed of it until mid September, after we had paid our tuition, moved into our apartments (which required us to sign a 12 month lease), and committed the entire year.
      3. It interrupted our year. If they had gone on strike right before the year started, it wouldn't have been as bad, but they chose to wait until halfway through the fall semester. And then they expected us to resume where we left off without any issues.
      4. There was no transparency. We were never informed by either side as to how they planned on resolving it, or how long it would last. For all we knew, there was no plan at all.
      5. The way it was resolved was insulting. After 5 weeks, it finally went to binding arbitration and faculty members were ordered back to work. And rather than starting the year over (which is what students wanted), they decided to cram the remaining year into a shorter time frame.
