There is only a few high E notes that are out of the range of a standard 4 string bass (with 20 frets), everything else is playable on a 4 string. You can always play lines octave higher or lower if they don't fit in the range of your instrument :)

I would say D minor key, since Bb6/9 -> A7 -> Dm is very typical chord progression :)
