    Great review. I was looking at getting a Beal collet system and have been looking at the Record. I am now ready to purchase the Record. Thanks again and Merry Christmas.

      I was going to mention the Beal collet system. I have it plus a set of collets of varying sizes. It’s a nice set. I wish Nova made dome jaws though, it would be a nice addition to their line and would be very useful.

      The dome does give confidence to work in close, the Beal collet system is similar in as much as there isn't sharp edges close to your fingers.

      @@PeteTwistedTrees Someday I still might get a Beal Collet system but for now the Record has one advantage. Using square stock / for me that is a real ice breaker. I need to use stock that is square and 1/4 inch. I may be wrong but I don't think the Beal system was designed for square stock. I think both have their plus's and minus's and a place in our tool collection.

    I recently upgraded to a Powermatic 3520C. The spindle on my old lathe was 1x8tpi. The Powermatic is 1.25x8tpi so I needed at least one new chuck. I bought an SC2. I love it. But you are right about the chuck key. I have several Nova chucks that use a similar type key. Unfortunately they are just similar. I keep getting the key for the SC2 mixed up with the Nova chuck key. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂

      You are welcome Robert, much easier to answer your question with a video than in text, as you have the jaws the drill mod is highly recommended.

    Great time Pete. I have that chuck and did not even think of drilling a hole. Perfect idea! I completely agree about the chuck key. I though if maybe drilling a hole and gluing a magnet inside to hold it to the lathe. Again thanks for sharing!

    • @PeteTwistedTrees
      @PeteTwistedTrees  Рік тому

      Spreading the word on drilling for grip was the key tip I wanted to get out there, in my opinion it makes the dome jaws much more useful. Watching it back I really should have finished the Finial by moving it out an inch at a time. It is a hard call on how long you get on a UA-cam video before people get bored and stop watching, as it was mostly talking there wasn't much I could speed up.

    Good looking little buggar. You could turn some handles for the key to make it so much better.

    • @PeteTwistedTrees
      @PeteTwistedTrees  Рік тому +1

      The curve on the current chuck key handle make it difficult to improve, but yes it can be done. But would be better all round if Record Power listen and change it.

    Great tip about the drill , why don’t you put a magnet on top of your headstock to hold your Chuck key

    • @PeteTwistedTrees
      @PeteTwistedTrees  8 місяців тому

      I used to have a magnetic tray for that purpose, but now have an odd shaped plastic headstock cover. Thanks for watching and 100% drill your dome jaws real game changer.

    I am a bit confused that you described the chuck and jaws a delight, when you were required to modify them to work properly. Happily, you had access to a representative of the chuck who told you how you can fix their design error. You do beautiful work on the flawed chuck.

    • @PeteTwistedTrees
      @PeteTwistedTrees  Рік тому

      Hi Ward, Ruby is supported by Record Power so has a slightly louder voice than you or me in their tool design ear. But I have also listed my video on their Facebook page so hopefully will also get heard. For some things working with a small chuck is far better and this one works for me generally it works much better after being drilled though.

    First time viewer. Thanks for sharing. No disrespect but maybe consider a different video camera or settings. Still things are quite clear but stuff with movement, such as when you were moving chucks back and forth in front of the camera, get blurry like your video setup can't keep up. At first I thought maybe my settings had gone to lower resolution or something.

      @PeteTwistedTrees  Рік тому

      Welcome David, Cameras are good, it was operator error I did a low size video to show a cut on Facebook messenger so switched the cameras to 10FPS and forgot to put it back up! I have a very heavy cold so I am going to blame that rather than the complete incompetence that it really was 😀obviously delighted this video has found an audience but it is yet another one that I need to redo properly one day down the line!

    Good review Pete. I have a chuck that I bought from Penn State, or Craft asupply, or one of those places a few years ago. The key handle for it was, as you put it, "abysmal"! Luckily, I have access, through my son, to a metal bandsaw, grinder, and welder. That handle got cut, lengthened, reshaped, and rewelded. Its is WAY more useful now. I know that everyone doesnt have access to those things, but its worth checking into if there's anyone in your area who does even "hobby" metalwork. Might cost a few dollars or pounds to get it done, but what price does one put on frustration? 😎❤👍

      Thank you Dave, I don't know anyone with the right tools / skills to sort the chuck key out but I will have a look around see if I can find anyone.

      That is a good idea, and I will do just that thank you. Doesn't solve the problem of the curved handle not feeling good in the hand though, hopefully Record Power are watching 😉

      Completely different jaws Pat, these dome jaws close down to 4.5mm and have no dovetail and only compression grip.
