The best way to keep tan sidewalls clean?....Buy black sidewalls, they look better 100% of the time 😂
FYI, how to know when you have used a quick link once too often [my experience]. When you pedal backwards and your chain become split in half and falls onto the ground! Observation and conclusion.
that might be a step a bit too far. For me it's when I can disconnect it by hand
KMC have a reusable quick link that cause several times. Just chose wisely your chain ⛓️
How many times did you use yours? I've done a good 15 without issue.
@@feedbackzaloopKMC quicklinks are actually designed to be (un)lockable by hand. What brand do you use that require tools?
@@dtsybulskyi sram/Shimano that come with the chain. But even KMC are stiffer than you say, it ain't Wippermann. Must be the wax interfering 🤷♂️
I have 4 waxed chains for my road bike, when I'm on the last one I wax 3 at the same time. Bike-discount sells 110 link ultegra chains for 18€.
Cleaning tan-wall tyres. when wshed and dried, rub with pencil eraser. Staedtler Mars-Plastic are best in my experience.
Yeah, I don't have anything better to do with my time. If those tan walls give you OCD you need some professional help.
In my experience you can make a very strong tire repair (provided it it is not too close to the rim bead), by gluing a bit of sidewall from an old tire (tyre) to the inside of the damaged part. It is important to sand and clean both surfaces and glue them with normal tire patch cement. The sidewall of an old tire like a GP 4000 is very strong, yet thin and flexible. I always carry a piece of old sidewall from this tire to use as a tire boot, and it has a piece of two-faced carpet tape attached to it, so I can just peel and stick it. It is much stronger (and cheaper) than a bank note!
@@bengt_axle Rema has fiber reinforced patches. I've used them with the edge of the patch on the bead without issue. I mostly use Lezyne's plug patches now though.
Min 1:11. I think that someone washing tires in the washing machine really urgently needs help from a good psychiatrist
There's a surprising number of folks that don't know about the wear indicator dimples on road bike tires... If your tires don't have these a general rule is 5000 miles or when you notice cracking/fraying on the sidewall.
The quick links last the life of my 9 speed and 7 speed chains, replace at .5 % wear. Have used KMC, SRAM, YBN, Wipperman and other links. I frequently remove chains to rewax and clean bike without issue.
Hi Ollie, I do wax chain and I bought kmc reusable links, they cost a little more. 6eur a pair on amz buy they are designed for being reused. You can find them in gold or black color too
Bike hack for your saddle bag: always carry a piece of old plastic toothpaste tube, as it is tough, weighs nothing and can be used to patch damaged tyres.
Tyre patches are a get-you-home solution only. I left one in permanently (covering a thorn that couldn't be removed), and the edge of the patch eventually wore a hole in the inner tube.
When I used tubes, I've had patches last over 20k miles. Never had one fail. I just replace a tube when I got sick of seeing too many in it😅
@@veganpotterthevegan Yeah, I'm talking about patches for tyres, not tubes. 🙂Patches for tubes are fine, if you can get them to stick.
@pembrokeshiredan I've had those last thousands of miles too. Using tubes and not
Waterless wash and wax for me after washing the bike on all metal parts save brakes. I also do sidewalls, and until the wax layer wears off, dirt just falls off wish a misty spray or damp cloth or in summer, just a brush even. This keeps even tan sidewalls clean, and I am talking MTB.
I am not a bike expert, and using 2 chains sounds like a great idea. but Technically speaking you should just use 1 chain , the chain and the teeth of your cassette will after a time set to each other by wear ( it becomes a tuned set). if you change 1 of the 2 there will be more wear and tear and both will last less long. - Note ► This is the case with loads of machinery and gearboxes but I am not 100% sure this is also the case for bikes ,Logic made me come to this conclusion, so correct me if I am wrong ;)
#askgcntech I know a waxed chain question will be answered ;-) I am always concerned by the amount of wax I have to remove in order to refit the quick link on my chain after waxing, pretty much all of it in order to get the groves to line up...... (KMC 11 S Lightweight)
Love how Ollie says waxed chains can last absolute ages, upwards of 800km... For me, that would take a long time, but spying on Ollie on Strava, 800km is about 2 weeks worth of cycling 😂
yeah so before i rewax... not the life of the chain!
Naturally, but 2 weeks is far from "ages" in my book 😀
#askgcntech zone 2 question - Ollie was using zone 2 power, Manon zone 2 heart rate - I ride to HRR, how does this affect zone 2 training?
Thanks
Not for sharing - this is important to me as I am recovering from long term ME/CFS so improving mitochondrial function is really important which could help further recovery. No one is really sure what causes CFS but mitochondrial dysfunction is the most likely.
Microfiber towel and strong rubbing alcohol (91%) gets most grease off and cleans the tan sidewalls very well.
To keep tan-walls clean, make sure you're careful not to contaminate them with the black grinding paste from your jockey wheels, as it'll mark them pretty much permanently. Another reason to wax your chain...
#askgcntech
I would also like Ollie to do a deep dive into Mywindsock, and have asked for this before.
#AskGCNTech When you talk about watt savings at different speeds (e.g., saving 5 watts when traveling at 50kph vs. saving 2 watts when traveling at 30kph), is my understanding correct that this is essentially talking about a rider’s windspeed and not their ground speed? In other words, most recreational and amateur cyclists don’t find themselves traveling for extended amounts of time at 50kph, but if I’m riding at 25kph according to my head unit and am up against a 25kph headwind, I’m pushing 50kph through the air, correct?
Yes that's correct
#askGCNtech question about tyre patches. I have been running tubeless, ran over some glass that would have done for any tyre or setup. The cut is too long for tubeless plugs (I tried) would a tyre patch allow me to use that tyre in a tubeless setup again? Or keep it running on a tube as I am currently?
#askgcntech I replaced my 10 year old 25mm tires with new 28mm tires, but I noticed that both sets have the same measured width of ~26mm when inflated, and in fact the newer ones list higher min and max psi than the old ones. Nevertheless, the new ones feel softer and more stable at higher speeds even though I'm at the same psi as before. What's going on?
Different tpi values have this effect. I noticed the same thing with my sets of tyres I installed a few weeks ago. There was a noticeable improvement in comfort at the higher tpi set.
#askgcntech Aero question for Ollie. We know that round tubes are horrible aerodynamically but how close could a wheel set optimized to a round tubed frame get to an aero frame in watts? Could one extend the rule of 105 to match the trailing edge of the front wheel to the down tube and the leading edge of the rear wheel to the seat tube and make significant savings? Second question, I have small hands and never use the last 2 inches of my drops. Would cutting that last section off have a detrimental effect aerodynamically, by disrupting airflow?
Exactly Why I Use BananaWax Racing TDF Chain Wax, Every Watt Counts.
#askgcntech as a followup on Shimano neutral service topic,
what is the propotrion of moto- (LeRe, RiFr) and bike- (LeFr, RiRe) setup brake levers in pro peloton?
#askgcntech: I have a follow-up question for your reuse of a quick link. If you do get the click when reconnecting, is it good for whole time it is attached or is there a chance of it disconnecting while riding?
I only get a click on first use. From then on nothing sounding but all has been good for 5 uses, but you need to look closely to check fully engaged.
if you want to clean your tan walls use a white shower rag with some BRAKE CLEANER on it.
#askgcntech
I want to get a TT Bike but I want to stick to 2x. 2 questions: Is it possible to configure it such that I actually shift the front derailleur manually instead of using di2 synchro shift? Second: Is a 58/42 chainring combo fine, or is the gap too big? I have seen Campenaerts has such a setup but I don't have pro mechanics at my disposal on every race 😅
Thanks!
#askgcntech Why has advancement in bottom bracket technology lead to significant reductions in component lifespan? My older bikes have covered 15-20k miles on their Shimano UN51 & UN71 cartridge bottom brackets and still smooth, one of which is my winter bike that has endured mostly wet and dirty roads. However I have recently had to replace the SRAM GPX bottom bracket on my gravel bike after only 2500 miles, and when I removed it the bearings were almost solid. This seems to be a backward step to me.
#askgcntech can I get a walkthrough of how Ollie does his hair?
#Askgcntech I noticed during the TDF time trial that some of the riders were trying to stay on the painted lines on the rode. Does this give them an advantage of some kind? Do you no any research about this?
#askgcntech wondering if from an aerodynamics point of view there is a better cadence? My thought is that a higher cadence would be slower since the higher leg speed at the top of the pedal stroke is inducing more drag but I also assume it's probably less than negligible.
Am I the only one confused by the vids being referred to as coming out, they have already been released 😕
Can only assume that this was recorded before they had released the shimano neutral service video
How does GCN decide which host to send to events like Eurobike?
Hello #askgcntech team, I have a problem with my Ultegra 6800 mechanical 11-speed cassette shifter. Sometimes when I shift to a lighter gear the larger lever does not return fully, leading to the smaller lever not engaging. During rides I would have to pull the larger lever back manually. A few turns tightening the cable corrects this but only temporarily. What is the proper fix? Do I need to upgrade to the new SRAM Red AXS group set?
If the racers in the pro tours are all using tubeless tires, has the incidence of flats decreased? We still see lots of wheel changes during TV coverage. What are the before and after statistics?
most are still using tubular tires.
@@batporio What????????? That's so 1985!!!! In the same vein as the outcasts who've been waxing their chains since the 70s, only for it to become cool in the last 2 years.
@@batporio nope non of the teams tour teams are on tubulars this year.
@askgcntech
Hello guys, I have two questions, but in the best case the answer to the first solves the second problem. I use Silca Tubless Milk and am very happy with it, but after a few weeks the milk always sticks to the valve and I can no longer inflate the tires. So my solution is to remove/change the valvecore and inflate the tire again. Do you have any idea for that problem? Because (here comes the second point) my muc-off tubless rimtape seems to be not that pressureresistent and it gets pushed into the holes for the spokes that much, that even with a tirebooster I need a whole lot of time to get the Contis seated again. I have changed the rimtape for the second time now in half a year but I don't think that this is the way it should work... ^^ Please! Help! Greetings from Hamburg
PS: Thanks for your existence! May your tires never gets punctured! :D
#askgcntech - What bike pedal / cleat system would you say is the easiest to unclip from? Following achilies surgery as a kid I have reduced strength and movement in one ankle and don't want to waste money on a system that I would struggle to get out off 😂
Keep your Tan wall tyres clean use car tyre cleaning product (Sams Detailing and Yum Yum are excellent). Brings them up like new.
#askgcntech I’m a recent convert to chain waxing and I’ve been kicking myself for not making the switch sooner. It’s got me wondering if there’s any other bike-related applications for hot waxing. As a Speedplay user I’m used to lubing my cleats… is it genius or idiotic to to consider hot waxing these too?! Love you x
How often do folks here go between hot waxing a given road bike chain, in terms of miles or kilometers, under decent riding conditions, i.e. good paved roads, not an excessive amount of dust and dirt, don't ride in the rain or through puddles and mud, etc.? I've heard various claims, from 150 to 300 miles.
#askgcntech Hi GCN crew, I've been having penile numbness and recently I found out the cause was the padding in my bib shorts. I have a Selle Italia Endurance SLR Boost saddle and would still get numb. So I put my hand down my pants and pushed the padding through the cutout, which relieved the pressure. I cut the pad open and removed the nose part of my Castelli bib pad (won't recommend because that keeps it in place) which helps with the issue as the pad has the same thickness at the sitbone and in the cutout area. My question is; Can you suggest any bib shorts with padding in the sit bones but no padding in the cutout area... price isn't an issue as long as it solves my problem. Currently thinking of getting Van Rysel Racer 2 bibs at the low end and ASSOS Mille GTO at the high end. Thanks.
#askgcntech I have a steel frame and an aluminum seatpost. I know you have to put something in between the seatpost and frame so they don't get stuck together. The problem is that now my seatpost keeps slipping down. I have cranked up the nm to above the recommended, but that's only a short term solution. What's the long term solution here? Thanks
#askgcntech I recently had a catastrophic fork failure, just above the bottom headtube bearing, on my gravel bike, how can I avoid this from happening again in the future? As going to the ER is inconvinient, and I dont really want to test my luck again.
The bike was built from an mtb, the frame and fork are AL. The headtube angle is/was 72-73°. My riding positoin is quite forward. On checking the bike afterwards I noticed I had some slight play in the front wheel bearings, but do not recall any in the headtube bearings (a-head). Most of my riding is on tarmac or dirt tracks, noting extreme or too technical.
I also had a similar problem on my roadbike, with material fatigue (steel, peugeot, kind of like Hanks recent budget bike), but caught it in time. I also have a quite forward position on that bike, as I also use it in triathlons with aerobars (seat clamp rotated, seat moved forward to get a more open hip angle). On this bike the bearings were ok.
Is it something I am doing, or am I just askig more of my cheap bikes than they can deliver or would this be more of a technical problem?
Dawn powerwash to keep the sidewalls tidy.
9:20 a new tyre everytime you drive by a roadkill, thats crazy!
I hate the tan side walls, all black tires solves the dirty looking white wall tires.
Along with white bar tape, I get all black bar tape.
I would like to know more about rim depth what do pros ride? what should the average rider/weekend race attempt be using on the road? Is 80 too much and does it effect me in the in the hills do I look outlandish #askgcntek
#askgcntech. Question, I'm fortunate to have a Pinarello Dogma F. I am thinking about the new Garmin 1050. I believe it will not fit on my Most out front mount. Have you had any luck with the Garmin 1050 fitting.

#askgcntech I thought cross-chaining was bad? Pogacar was clearly in the big/ big rings after his attack on the final climb of stage 15 at the tour??
#askgcntech I keep getting an eyeball full of sweat in my right eye when going up climbs on warm days. Sometimes it stings so much I have to pull over and stop. Really would like to stop it from happening, so glasses on or glasses off? Different glasses? New set of eyebrows? Something else I have thought of? Please help

@@stephencharles6932 I did lose a bit of eyebrow in a crash a few years ago so I guess the scar could be channeling the sweat straight in to they eyeball
Watt reduction simply means the same speed with less effort same as aero

500-600 km before rewaxing? Must be a very noisy chain by then. Should it not be every 250-300 km? At least, that's my experience.
250km for me atm but my cadence is pretty low atm too. Maybe it’s torque dependent?
@@billeterk you hot melt waxiing or dripping? dry or wet riding?
@@oliverbridgewood3929 always hot melt. Riding all conditions (commuting in Melbourne winter) but I swap over after I'm home if caught in the wet (rinse in boiling water, start wax refresh a little over 100º for a few minutes to boil off any internal droplets).
It also occurs to me that I tend to be lax about cross-chaining and change gear pretty frequently, so that may impact the longevity. I'm not really fussed though, I find waxing super convenient due to cleanliness alone. And since I use Connex links rotating chains a 1-2 times a week isn't inconvenient.
