Hello Hamilton, I commented yesterday saying I love your content. I just want to expand on that….I enjoy your screen personality. I am new to the Cnc and woodworking community, and you make everything easy to understand and make me want to spend all day down in my workshop! Your insights to the business aspect a little less daunting. I also like your honesty.
Thank you for all your hard work, and keep rocking and making videos!
    Chris

Loving this series. You have given me a lot of ideas for some projects I will try out soon. I like to absorb a thousand different videos for the basics then put my own spin on things.
Like a moron I hadn't been 'liking' your videos. I went back and hit that like button on them all.
Thanks for the inspiration and information.

For the sign job I would charge $60 an hour for your time designing and making the cut files as well as painting and finishing with a minimum of 1 hour, figure in your material costs and either charge by the square foot for the sign or your $1 a minute for the cnc work. After all that multiply by 1.5. This should allow about 20% for incidentals like insurance, electricity and possible mess ups and 30% profit for the company. You can also adjust your hourly wage to like $60 for the design work but $40 for painting and finishing or something like that.

You may also start considering to build in a 10-15% increase on your material costs. There is always a chance you quote lets say $50 for the 10 BF the project will take because the last time you got maple it was $5 a BF. Then get to your supplier and the price is at $5.50 a BF. You do not want to have to eat that increase. But one other thing you can do is if the price is at the $5 a BF is bring that price back down to the cost and come in under your original quote by just a little. Clients always like when the job ends up costing them less than the original quote even if it is only by a few dollars. .

In regards to your signs question. I would definitely charge probably not enough and halfway through realize that I'm making about 10 dollars profit
I think in my experience if they are coming to you they already know what you can make and what you can do. And are expecting to pay for that. My standard products I think I have priced pretty competitively maybe even a little low.
But my custom work I always end uprising it too low and regretting it. I think whatever number you would come up with you should just charge 15-20% more at least, That is something that I've had to do to make sure that it's still worth my time.

For fuzzies on a short carve - run the carve again and it will clean them up. Your bit is probably getting dull.

It's so hard to stop people from copying designs. Hopefully, people recognize the source and support you instead of the pop-up stolen items. It's so discouraging for small businesses and makers to be copied and sometimes undercut. The flat rate shipping for USPS is a great way to get started in online selling while controlling your cost and overhead. After you feel out the market and your volume, you can often save money buying your own boxes and using a service for discounted online postage. It's great to see your growth this month! I hope the month finished out strong and the live stream goes off without a hitch!

    As far as the sign.
    $25 per square foot.
    30×46÷144×2×25= $479.16
I'd say $500 due to the complexity of the finishing.

Hey! materials + 60$/hr. Is what I have found from local independent operators. Businesses probably have something similar with an additional profit multiplier.

Inscribe "Get it while it's hot!" or "You have been poisoned!" So when the casserole gets eaten and you can see through the clear casserole dish, you can read the text :)

I have been really enjoying your maketember vids, and I look forward to each new one! Thanks for that! Too often some other content providers have a lot of filler that makes them tedious, but you are focusing on the actual useful and interesting stuff 👍.
Regarding pricing, I like to estimate my design time, then my start to finish carving and finishing time, all at an hourly rate. Then I add in material costs and I have a good estimate of real value. Shipping and/or delivery time and cost is then factored in, and the sell price becomes clear to me. If the design can be used multiple times, I adjust down. on design time/cost.
The toughest part for me is understanding what the market will support, to assure I am in an attractive range for buyers.
    Keep up the great work!

How I price projects = Materials; Wood, Paint, Stain, Hardware, etc. PLUS Labor; What you charge per hour for Design, Setup/Prep, Staining, painting, finishing, etc. PLUS add a percentage (your choice) of profit margin. Then add appropriate Tax and shipping if needed. I created a spreadsheet where all I do is enter the numbers and it totals it out for me. oh, I almost forgot I have a percentage for wear and tear for bits & the CNC.

You can get priority mail boxes for free as well. Pick up that, a 50lb postage scale access a big roll of brown paper. Pretty much everything you need for standard shipping. You could throw in a label printer, but I'd save that for later. Just my $0.02. Thank you for the great videos!

Krykies, getting started shipping through my Etsy store was such an 'adventure'. I'd been saving boxes and those air pillows from deliveries for quite some time in preparation. Most/all of what I was shipping were fairly small, light items (decor stuff), and I burned through the inside packaging stuff (air pillows, brown paper for dunnage and void fill, etc) super quick. I was either going to have to buy a BUNCH of packaging materials, or buy properly sized boxes and just a little bit of packaging materials.
It's been an interesting evolution over the last 10 months as I analyze what I'm building, comparing it to other people's similar products (is mine the right size? or too small? maybe those valet trays are too big?) and planning for my next iteration. It's a lot of work!! But it's also fun, especially if you love the analysis side of business.

Do you ever cover your carve with the blue vinyl? Can you still use the brass brush for the fuzzies? I usually just drop the Z zero 0.002 and run the file again to get rid of the fuzzies when I have the stencil vinyl on. Just wondering what y’all do. Also, all my kids want Maketember shirts. 😂😂 they love watching these videos with me.

Just doing something similar and getting the fuzzies. I drop .2mm and rerun but it doesn't completely solve the problem because the cutter is still cutting against the grain on some parts of the profile. Next time I am going to make a duplicate toolpath but with conventional rather than climb milling, run one after the other and see if that improves things.
