- Part 1 of our week away in floods on the Deua river waiting for floodwaters to subside so we can get to our favourite swimming hole.. Landcruiser country, 1 70 series 1 pre dpf 200 series and a creative conversion chopped 200 dual cab.. we throw everything the land has to offer at the new 4 cylinder automatic LC79 Toyota landcruiser plus we give our jayco expanda 14.44 outback a hell of a time also, can the new 1GDLC79 2.8 handle it.. We test out low range diff locks hill assist fuel consumption numbers we test the kumho mt71 mud tyre in the wet terrain also
toyota should be so proud, props to you for taking a brand new landcruiser to where they were born to be mate!
Cheers for that comment... Appreciated
The only reason you put the AISIN 6-speed in 4th is it locks up the torque converter above 80kmh, 5th and 6th will too, but if there is any load it won't which means you are flaring the torque converter and cooking it. Its 1990s technology, a ZF8 Speed would be better which locks every gear including 8th and will not unlock no-matter the torque load.
It’s hard to fathom that in 2024 a toyota auto won’t hold a gear.
Cheers for that info..
How interesting.
Great to see a review that pushes the 4 cylinder. Those climbs with a van are good
Thanks, cheers for taking time to comment
Yeah that was great scenery and an honest review but 20 litres per 100 is what my old F100 did and it could pull 4.5 ton legally and a lot more if required. Admittedly none of the modern creature comforts but at least if it shat itself in the middle of nowhere I had a good chance of fixing it (which I did but nothing major). I would hate to lose hill decent with passengers and van in tow.
Absolutely love the video guys, especially the real world testing of the new four-cylinder. I have a pre-DPF single cab 79 series, which I love, and I’d be more than happy to go to the four-cylinder if I needed to. Good work guys.
Thanks heaps for the positive feedback...
Always look forward to your next video mate ! Really interested to see this one, cheers
Hope you enjoy it!
I got a scan gauge which can tell you when the TC is locked. It helped me understand my LC200 auto when towing 3.4t and I now use S4 and S5 if there’s no hills or headwind etc. When engine load gets to about 80% the TC unlocks and uses more fuel so I change down to S4 and the TC will lock.
Love the video nice to see people appreciating our Eurobodalla south coast region we have countless good 4x4 tracks with varying degrees of difficulty
Such a great part of this awesome country!!!
Nice driving skills, i appreciate how you can handle your car and use it's potential.
Appreciate the comments.... Thanks
How cool do those 2 stroke bikes sound…. And do love the sound of a v8 79 in the bush.. great video thanks..
Glad you enjoyed it.. Yes they do sound awesome... Thanks for taking the time to comment.
looks really good! looks like the new engine can do a lot than I have expected
Surprised me too... So much so that I sold my V8 2022 model
It's a Toyota Land Cruiser ! What more can you say ?!?!?! Hey from California - Great Video !
Love the comment, cheers and Gday from down under
Nice job 👍 really testing that truck abilities
Thanks for taking time to comment..
I wonder if one of those transmission lock up kits from wholesale automatics would help with engine breaking and tow economy.
I can't wait for all the aftermarket tweaks to become available for it... But im hearing you, no sought it will.....
My Rexton does about 14 litres per hundred after it settles in. I’ve had a lot of tow vehicles in my life time. Apart from upgrading to heavier duty springs my 23 sangyong rexton is the best tow car I’ve owned.
Rx270 tdi?
Came across a red belly black at upper Colo reserve a few weeks ago. Was in the middle of the small walking track between the river and the reserve.
Hopefully it minded its own business and didnt cause any stress/fear to any1 in your party.. Kids etc
All in all a great video why are we not using hill decent with the van on
I think I may have had rear locker engaged so didnt think I had that option, or is it that it doesn't work with something in tow.. I actually can not remember...
Great videos. Would love to hear how the 200 did on same hills with the descent.
You on channel Phil, let us know what your 200 was in????

Just love the RHS and LHD, with love from india,
Is the four cylinder as fun as the v8 to drive? I love the sound of my VDJ. Even turning the key makes me smile
Fun in a different way, mind you its still very new to me, so it may wear off.. But I know exactly what you mean, my 2016 grey one sounded so good, pre dpf big airbox big 4inch stainless snorkel, and exhaust a real head turner that one was.. the white one not so growly, motor stock bar a 3 inch exhaust but retaining the dpf, so its probably as much fun without the noise, but can spin up the 285s pretty easy plus give ford rangers a run for their money in traffic where the white one was no chance.. Neither compare to my old grey one... The funnest of the 3... Thanks for the question..
@@TeamBulletOffroad Iagree it's fun in a different way. My 4x4 is also a 4 cylinder and I love that vehicle.
Great vid !
Just a suggestion, yes it will climb hills in drive but usually it stays in higher gear and trans slips a lot which in turn creates a lot of heat in the trans. Suggest get device to monitor trans and engine temps, I use torque app that plugs into OBD2 outlet.
Keep the vids coming.
These old Toyota automatics look ancient compared to the modern ZFs.
Cheers, yes will look into that, thanks for the info and taking the time to comment..
Lovely Ep and country guys looks like been big fires around there.
Well spotted, Yes a few years back now they raged through here..
Thanks, yes I was a farmer and in the QLD BFB for 40 years,
@@TeamBulletOffroad
Yeah the fires ripped thru the whole south coast back in 2019, there are still areas that have not fully recovered yet I spent that horrible night on my roof with hose in hand, I live in Batemans Bay and the flames could be seen well over 30 feet above the Telstra tower on the south side of town 😮
Thats what happens if you do not do control burns every couple of years, @@hansottevanger4112
Only watched your video to see how the ute would go towing. Must say im impressed with it's towing offroad. Looks like im pleasantly suprised.

Great video. Ya might need to turn your trailer brakes up more with an auto then manual. I noticed that when towing my 3.2t boat. Had them at 4 with manual and now 5-6 with auto. Should stop your brakes getting to hot in the car.
Great advice, I will test that next trip..
We appreciate you're honest and real world reviews and good to see Toyota has improved the truck somewhat but left room for many improvements, eg brakes, rear diff, suspension, air box, tuning etc - bit like the old one, which underbuilt, noisy and gutless !
100%, we must allow for aftermarket accessories.. Hahaha, you got to feel ripped off at some point, RIGHT?
all the reveiws of the new crusiers are bloody hilarious 😂
Good job on the hill though. nice drive

I love watching overland Oz videos... mainly because I'm from NZ and am in no way interested in snakes and spiders and drop bears. I just like the scenery. We have those things here (except snakes), but they don't kill you, at worst they just make you itch for a few days. The drop bears here don't kill you, they just get overly attached and won't leave you alone and it just gets really awkward. Be very careful as a tourist.
Love the comment mate, cheers for taking the time..
@@TeamBulletOffroad cheers, great vid mate. The more real reviews like yours I watch the closer I get to ordering a new 76. This weekend is under a '93 2nd Gen Surf installing a new clutch...
Any Hill Descent that I do with or without a trailer and it's slippery or gravelly even both I always lock it in four-wheel drive low range and put the automatic in first gear and let the car do itself and I don't touch the brakes ever. And when it does slide I still have four wheels turning that will help keep the car under control and slippery conditions. Might I also add my tyre pressure could be as low as 18 psi and that is on all terrains
Nice advice, thanks for taking the time to comment..
Ya breaks shouldnt be getting that hot prob need to adjust the break controller n let the van help more
Thanks for that response

Hey mate awesome content loving every bit of it! Looking to getting my kids dirt bikes also can I ask what bikes are your kids riding in this video?
Thanks mate, So Yamahas YZ65 for Nicholas and YZ85 for Amelia.. Awesome bikes...
You are doing a fantastic job grading that track with your caravan bumper mate.
Come on Aussie come on.😂
Love the comment mate.... Made my day!!
Maravillosa aventura, es casí imposible tener una auto como estos en colombia debido al costo. Algun día mismo plan diferente presupuesto. Felicitaciones!
Thank you for commenting.. Be safe
Thankyou for such a great test. 20 L/100k is nothing special towing a single axle poptop, but I'm guessing you were pushing pretty hard. Just checked on of your other videos and you got 18.5L/100 from the V8 towing the same van last year. Seems like the automatic trans is costing you fuel?
Yes, thanks for commenting... Only difference was the tray didnt have as much weight in it, and nearly all of the big hills I couldn't hold speed limit.. I am pushing it and the upcoming trip to Tasy will be a good comparison as far as towing like for like over a real distance where I will try find that "groove" as far as not really pushing it..
Land cruisers are unaffordable for the normal Australian now . Very happy with my Rexton.
gday mate.whats size tires and rim offset do you have.i have the same van and I am looking at upgrading.cheers
Was a 33 12.5 15 on an 8 inch wide neg22
How much of that Jayco did you leave on the track?
Thanks for sharing
I wouldn't swap my V8 for the 4. Nothing like 1st low with a rear locker in.
Hahaha re Jayco... It loves it! As far as the engine braking, yes I hear you loud and clear.. Thanks for commenting..
I'd do a performance upgrade on the brakes if you're towing a camper. Disk Brakes Australia make good slotted and vented rotors and they make their own performance brake pads too.
Cheers, will look into that...
great video mate, been wanting to see some proper reviews on the new cruisers
Thanks for commenting, next episode we see how they go as a boat.. Haha
I really wish they put better brakes on the 79, its the main gripe i have with mine. it really doesnt take much to over heat them.
I agree 100%
Impressive, but I think I’ll keep my twin locked 80 a bit longer
Nice ride, love the 80s.. Thanks for commenting
the 2-8 works very good Denny , how do you think it would go with all the after market accessories and a bigger tow behind it?
Rolly B It towed Bullet fine, that set up is a tad over 3 tonne.. But yes once I put bar winch and bigger shoes????
“Like a donkey 🫏 in the fog” funny as . 😂
Hahaha
Pretty impressive all round!
Surprised me too...
Awesome review thanks, can I ask what that campground is called please?
Its a private property just out of Araluen..
Where abouts did you go camping mate? Looks very nice.
Its a private property on the Deua River just out of Araluen
Great vid, that end footage of the river makes me want to pack up and head down to there now. How much weight are you pulling with the van and what loaded in the ute?
Thanks for commenting, yes makes us sad to leave that special river! Van fully loaded is around 2tonne and around half a tonne in tray...
Nice vid
Cheers
Jim
Thanks for taking the time to comment Jim..
Overheating brakes because lack of engine braking while towing or heavy load is a big problem. Happened to me a few times in my old auto v6 120 prado...can be pretty scary when u get fade.
I agree, the fine line of juggling between using only trailer brakes then only car and then together, ive actually had a fire from a blown axle seal on the old grey 79 where the gear oil caught alight..
Holly crap that got very hot.!
Does the Toyota not have “hill decent” that is adjustable cos it should be using the transmission as well as the brakes to control your speed down hill, I set mine to a speed that is sensible and just apply brakes if necessary
If you're going to be using it regularly for towing, kept an eye on the coolant level, once the car hits 120-130,000kms. The 2.8 willnt have the longevity of V8, if used the same way. Admittedly the V8 is/ was never power machine, but its reliable carrying heavey loads.
Thanks heaps for the info Andy..
Looks like another great family holiday. What's the bike you ride? Looks like the new Cruiser did very well.
Just an old farm bike, a road registered Yamy TTR-230, im stuck between a rock and a hard place, want a newer bigger bike but won't get all 3 in tray if I do, plus at my age it takes a lot longer to heal, but soon I won't be able to keep up with the kids...
@@TeamBulletOffroad I thought it may have been something like that. I have a par of old Suzuki DR 250's waiting to be turned into the 1 bike but I'm thinking it may be easier to get something running. I would prefer a 450 - 650 for some moto camping trips.

A 4 banger in a land cruiser, all that extra weight and small motor, think I will stick with my D max that has a 3LT, it does a better job at half the cost.

Nice video 🤩 Is your cruiser lifted?
All stock, bar the airbags in rear..
Any tips for how you judge the river flow for a safe river crossing to attempt? Some of the vic high country river crossings aren't particularly long but they can get real deep and fast.
Always walk it as ive never driven anything that I couldn't walk.. Judge the flow and direction you need to exit not having to fight the flow. Ive seen vehicles been turned because drivers heading directly to exit not allowing for flow, and nice momentum without being too much wheelspin.. Each crossing needs to be judged individually. Hope this helps and thanks for commenting.
Wouldn't it be nice if Mr Toyota used their parts bin a bit better, why not throw the auto out of the 300 behind the 2.8? Personally although the 6 speed seems tough enough, I would love to experience a newer 8 or 10 spd auto behind the VDJ in my Twungy.
Yes but I think it would need more ccs than a 2.8 behind the 8-10speed
Given it is the answer that most manufacturers use ala the original Ranger Raptor with the Bi-Turbo 2L and the 10 Spd, the 2.8 would love the extra cogs.
Nice video but you guys put the turtle the same way it came from so it will try to cross again at some point….
Thats the way it was heading, his head curled up the direction we took him.. I saw him as I drove over the top of him heading that way too.. Thanks for commenting..
Where about is that lookout please
On private property out of Araluen..
Thats why you use 30A self reseting circuit breaker and not fuse on Tow Pros
Yes, thanks for that info..
Absolutely!!
Hey mate, what was causing the beeping during that first off road hill climb and can you turn it off in the settings?
Just the seat belt, ive not worked out how to disable it yet....
Give it 12 months and a manual TC lock up kit will be available so that downhill's will be locked like a manual gearbox. Factor that, coupled with further reduction gears in low-range and it should perform exactly the same as a manual V8 for downhill engine braking.
100%....... dual transfer cases would be sick too haha
Great video who's the narrator 😅?
Thanks for commenting.. I do the narrating.. Cheers
Good test you are doing.
The 2.8 uses a lot of fuel when it’s worked hard.
This model is more expensive than the previous model and you get 4 less cylinders that you have to flog the guts out if for performance.
This I’m sure will shorten its life span.
I’m guessing at full gvm and gcm at over 7 tonne it’s performance won’t be very good.
Toyota is taking the piss out of its customers.
It went good towing the comp truck which in total was around 6 tonne, but I hear you re the longevity...
Should have the v6 from the 300 series in it if the v8 engine is to be phased out.
This is all about Toyota maximising their profits by putting that little 4 cylinder in a 70 series.
For now it’s a big novelty because it has a auto box.
After a year or 2 when owners see high fuel consumption and poor performance trying to overtake fully loaded towing , they might see through the smoke and mirrors.
Brah go down to low range if you have to to minimise chance of overheated brakes downhill
Agree 100%.. Thanks for commenting
What towing mirrors are your buddies 200's wearing?
MSAs
My son bought a hilux with 140,000 km and it cracked it's pistons as the previous owner used it for towing there caravan I wonder if this motor will last like the V8 when towing.
Bugger, sorry to hear that about your sons Lux... Yes longevity unknown in the 70...
Great review. As you know i bought the hilux to see if i can live with the 4cyl and 6 speed. Having has so many v8s etc. the delivery of the power in the 4 cyl is so different to the v8 especially down hill. There just seems to be more “mass” in the v8 and so torque (even tho less) is better spread. But maybe thats me. I even looked at a zf8 speed conversion on my 2020 79. Can i justify the $30,000 price difference between a hilux and 4cyl 79 (load carrying aside) 🤔 i will have to keep watching your adventures before i out down the coin.
Cheers Simon, I hear you, I too looked at auto-ing my 79 a while back, just couldn't justify the coin....
Hey mate where did you guys go. Private property.
Yes private property on the Deua river, so spoilt we are to have this awesome place to go away to annually.. Thanks for commenting.
You say Chele gets nervous, does that mean you don’t?
No.... I really dont, it all seems logical and doable in the little 4wd avenue in my brain.. even in a 4wd comp I really dont feel the nerves... I know this because I can compare the way I feel vs watching my kids race mx, thats nerves...Im always nervous and on edge until they hit the chequered flag. Even when I was younger playing grade rugby league, I remember players around me all saying how nervous they were, I always felt excited and lucky to be doing what I did...
@@TeamBulletOffroad I guess that’s what makes great leadership. As long as the family is in your hands I think they will be safe. Definitely not for all folks though. 👍
Машинку конечно надо обклеить полиуретановой плёнкой, чтобы каждой ветки не бояться.)
My wife agrees.... Thanks for commenting..
Please tow in 4th, 2800 revs is the peak of power, or we'll get a new group of people complaining about the motor not being strong enough. This is not the V8, High it may seem, but you use less fuel at higher revs. I know people say it's fine in 5th but they sell the cars in 2 years and the next owner has to pay for the piston blow out.
Totally mate. Towing a 2.6t van behind a 2021 Hilux. Trans temps & EGT’s run way cooler towing in 4th rather than 5th. Only pulling about 2600rpm@100kph and does it easily.
Thanks to both of you, I will do this on our upcoming trip to Tasy, and let you know differences..
May I ask why didn’t you buy a hilux? In my opinion this is a less comfortable and more expensive hilux.
Live axle front, robust, strong you can fit a 35ich shoe on it with 2inch lift, sorry to disappoint apart from my comp truck the last hilux I drove was a 2011 N70 and as soon as my kids were out of capsules the 79 was in.... Theres no comparison, approach, departure. Factory twin locked... Thanks for asking...

@@TeamBulletOffroad makes sense and thanks for the video link TBO - a lot of those tracks look familiar when I lived in Canberra and took my amazingly capable ‘97 Subaru Forester via back roads of Braidwood, Araluen Valley and Moruya - 11 Subarus later I’ve finally gone for a Hilux with better camping capacity now equipped with an aluminium canopy - it has better ground clearance and descent capability with no hot brakes - even stock with a Safari snorkel the shallow rivers no longer stop me - I much prefer the auto now with effortless climbing and only two foot pedals to work with - I think the V8s will start to loose value and appeal now for city- based folk who only do occasional off-roading but like weekend touring - the four cylinder appears equally capable for most of us - suspension and brakes will certainly be worth looking at providing warranty issues don’t arise - for me the automatic Troopcarrier is the perfect city dweller/two-person tourer.
@@johnnumbat9782 Thanks for the comment John, yes the scenery and even the tracks and rivers are so similar to nearby Bendethra- Deua National park, so no your not mistaken.. As long as we all enjoy the amazing Aussie bush, and sounds like you have in a variety of vehicles.. Yes an auto troop would be cool.. The price of the V8s could go either way, a lot of people really hate the 4cyl concept, so that may spike the V8 price, especially if something does come a-miss with any of the guys doing the testing... 1 issue with any of these early ones on the tests people are doing could have a roll on affect...

40yo 4 cylinder diesels towing are totally struggling to make it up every second hill. What high performance 40 year old diesels are you talking about?
Thanks Darren..
Cheers Pete, yes ive been driving 4cylinder diesels since I was 17, 35years of it, where does time go, 2.2 2.4 2.8 3.0 L 2L 3L 5L all aftermarket turbo kits then plenty of 2Hs turboed, none of these would hold speed limit on there own, let alone towing.. Apart from my previous 2 79s only Chelles fortuner was a surprise 4 cylinder that can tow..
Yes wrap it in Kamo
Cool!
So Epic
Cheers mate, theres a question above for you, what gear did you use on the descend from the lookout I think he's asking..
Lets see in 5 or 6 years time how the engine travels
I agree, but my track record, if a better 79 comes out, most likely ill update again, I went from a 2016 pre dpf to a 21 dpf and better gearing to the auto.. An auto V8 is what ill settle on... But they won't give us that!
Turtle or tortoise?
Turtle, we done have land based tortoises here in oz..
Don’t just look at the gear and fuel - look at your transmission temperature in 4th and other gears.
Thanks for that tip... Appreciate it..
