Correcting 3 misconceptions you seem to have.
    1. K-pop is not a genre of music, it is an industry
    2. BTS is not kpop, K-pop is just a small part of their identity
    3. BTS fans (ARMY) are, for the large majority, not fans of K-pop
So no, no BTS member is expected or demanded by their actual fans (real army) to present themselves as “idols”. They are artists first and foremost, sure they do fit the criteria to be idols, but majority of the fans reject this dehumanizing glorification. And BTS members have publicly talked abt in the past how they wished idols could be treated as normal people, RM in an recent interview talked abt how he is just a 29 year old guy living in Korea who lives a slightly different life then others, but that he’s just human, not perfect, not invincible, just human.
RM himself is an artist of a lifetime. From his lyricism, to his rap and singing skills, to producing, studying and exploring new genres fearlessly, dancing, acting, performing, playing instruments. His honesty and genuineness in and outside of his music. He speaks 3 languages fluently (Korean, Japanese, English) and has an 148 IQ but also incredibly high levels of emotional intelligence, his speeches at the UN have been quoted in American college graduations, he is the main songwriter, the leader, gives all the interviews, specially internationally. He loves and cares abt his 6 brothers (BTS members) more than anything in the world and has been leading them since he was just out of high school at 18-19 years old. I hope you give his new album a listen (~30min), if you liked the instrumental beginning of this song you will find the entire soundscape of the album amazing 😊

@@fauziahpawan6605 Joon is my ultimate bias, I’ve been army for a little over a year, the first solo work I explored was his album indigo bc it had just come out the month prior to me getting into BTS group music, and I absolutely fell in love with him, with the person that he is, not in the romantic sense but just as another person living on this planet you know? And everything else is history, I began exploring more and more of BTS as a whole and now I, who joined a mere month after Jin enlisted and have spent my entire time as army saying tearful goodbyes to these men that I had never really heard cared abt 2 years, will get to be part of his welcome home and celebrate festa for the second time, I can’t wait for our moon to come home! 😊 Agree with everything you say. I have no idea how people treat idols in SK or wherever else and I don't care. BTS are beyond the term "idol" for me. They are like my friends, like my little brothers, like my guilty pleasure, like my biggest source of inspiration and definitively they are normal people who I respect in whatever they do.
I hope newcomers reactors or baby armys will understand this sooner than later 😅

RM, Kim Namjoon, is one of three rappers in BTS and one of the main songwriters for the group. He is brilliant lyricist, 148 IQ. When BTS members go solo, they have more freedom of expression than when they are representing BTS, an idol group. But the rules for Idols in Korea don't really apply to them anymore. They have been together 11 years and are global superstars, way beyond Korean entertainment standards. This song won't be played on Korean TV or radio, but it will be streamed by folks all over the world. They respect their country and all seven are doing their mandatory military service right now. This song is off a very Indie album he just released called Right Place, Wrong Person. Last year he put out Indigo, which is more mellow and musical. He still raps a lot in it. You might enjoy sampling it on Tiny Desk Korea where he sings 3 songs with a small band. He collabbed on it with Erica Badu, Anderson Paak, and other wonderful musicians who seemed honored to do it because it was RM. He has mad respect among fellow musicians/artists.

It's not even that kpop fans are controlling per se, it's more that it's the culture in Korea in general to hold celebrities to a higher "moral" standard and to expect them to be perfect people - on top of that there is a toxic cancel culture as well...I think this is really where the kpop reputation stems from. In many ways BTS is protected from that bc a great majority of their fans don't live in Korea or have that mindset. I'll also say, it's incorrect to assume that fans of BTS are kpop fans - I don't know if it's correct to say the majority of us, but a great number of us are BTS fans and not the industry in general. Even apart from being an "idol", as the leader of BTS RM has felt a lot of pressure to represent the band in a good way and even became a representative for the country as a whole, especially outside Korea being the only member who is fluent in English, then on top of that from what I understand about him since the Love Yourself series he had been trying to shift away from music that expressed anger or that expressed things that could make those receiving it feel badly about themselves, but it's also not healthy to bottle those feelings or deny they are there...which happened. He shared in a recent video with band member Jimin, that he has been feeling very stifled as an individual and had lost touch with who he was so this album was his way of taking time away from BTS to explore that and express what needed to be said. Groin is the title of this track bc it's all of the emotions and thoughts that he had buried deep within himself, in his groin...I take the spiral tunnel at the beginning as a descent in those deeper, darker regions. Otherwise, content whose, for anyone that is truly familiar with BTS' discography or RM himself (Cyphers 1-4, Ugh, Joke or his full 1st mixtape "RM" 2015 won't feel super shocked by what he's saying, and we were hoping for him to make something like this, but thought we would have to wait until after his military service.

RM is the leader and main rapper in BTS. He was an underground rapper before joining the group. He started songwriting and rapping at 13. He is the main songwriter out of the members (even though they all write, compose, and produce)
The entirety of RPWP is RM liberating himself. This track specifically tackles his feelings as an Idol and the leader of BTS. The expectations and constant prying from people that aren't even fans, waiting for him to "fuck it up"
Also, BTS is beyond K-pop. It'll become more apparent the more you dive into their discography. They love to talk about important matters, speak their mind and explore new genres and sounds. They don't bow down to please fans or the industry - they are themselves unapologically and ARMY loves them for it
So, to answer your question, K-pop fans probably hated his album if they only listen to K-pop. But ARMYs really loved it because we're used to this kind of BTS

Yes. You stumbled onto one of the most creative genius minds in the music business at a time of seriously self exploration. LOL. I don't think those in Korea ever hear much of BTS, even though they are one of the only groups of ALL Koreans. Most KPOP groups bring in outside individuals who speak English.
With RM, every album is so different. He (and BTS) span genres to say and speak what they want to say. He is the Leader of BTS and the only one who speaks English fluently. He is one of 3 rappers and they have 4 vocals. They are not typical. (And he doesn't typically sing so crass, but he doesn't hold back when he wants to say what he wants to say.) His reference to diplomat is because he is actually and has spoken twice at the UN. They started as a HipHop group but added vocals and choreo of KPOP at a time when that really wasn't done. As a result, they were shunned by the HipHop World (who considered him a sellout, falsely assuming he wouldn't be creating his own music) and shunned by the KPOP world (who considered them too free and non-conformist to the strict IDOL standards as you touched on). To this day, over 90% of KPOP don't participate in the creative process, yet BTS has done so since before debut. So they are definitely different and they basically said screw it, we'll do our own thing and essentially paved the way for younger artists to have more options.
This particular album, he is expressing unsettled mind and chaos within. The songs and the album he wanted a feel of constant ups and downs (and disruptions) rather than a smooth listen of flows lifting and then resolving. His whole discography is something to explore, but I would really love for you to listen to Wildflower off his previous album. This is a live with Eng Subs by a channel called Enjoy BTS More. She works hard to find the best translations for live performances that don't typically have them. Also, her videos don't typically get copyrighted. ua-cam.com/video/ux5WWmh9Kvc/v-deo.htmlsi=gYNoasyeNHtYsfQh (Of course, there is the actual MV but I assume you like to hear a live version more.) Have just discovered your previous videos with JK and now RM so looking forward to checking out more.
For Jin (who is coming out of ARMY in 12 days after a year and a half) you should check out Epiphany! ua-cam.com/video/IKqtyJReVVk/v-deo.htmlsi=OxkvW_74ufXGAwka and just for fun... check out ARMY singing this during the performance break. ua-cam.com/video/oJnzmL0x1CU/v-deo.htmlsi=7gYrSlW4Vga1MvWu
But also... honestly... I know this isn't typically your thing... but you should check out Taylor Mari's Guide to BTS too. ua-cam.com/video/huV_yIdxZPY/v-deo.htmlsi=7EuDduhIckhYUccZ It is 47 minutes, but goes by fast and you will get tons of views as well. Mostly though, it is a good base for their history and the individuals. She is a professional editor so you can play the whole thing without editing or copyright issues. She will be doing a part 2 now that all the boys are doing their solo work. In the video, you should know Korea used a different age system which is typically 2 years above the International age. They consider time in the womb and then everyone turns a year older on Jan 1st each year, so when they say Jungkook was 15 when he joined BTS, he was actually only 13!!! And he was 15 when they debuted in 2013. It is an excellent back story and will give you some samples of songs you might want to check out, (they are typically listed in the top corner of the video as she goes). Really really hope you check it out, even with it being atypical. You will have plenty of vocal moments and a variety of music samples to give thoughts on. As with this video... you will learn that you never know what you are going to get when you check out a new BTS or solo member song. Their versatility is one of the coolest things about them, in my opinion. We never have any idea what is going to drop when they give us new music... Okay. Sorry so long. Just wanted to get that out there. Have fun whatever you do. I hope whatever you do includes at least some BTS in the future. The diversity from a musicians standpoint should be really fun to explore. :)

BTS debuted with rebellious music. That's the foundation of their musical identity. If you listen to NO MORE DREAM, their debut song you will know what i mean.
Some information about BTS that you need to know to understand this RM songs context fully.
    1. Kpop isn't a genre. Its an industry in 2 senses.
In the west, the term kpop is used to indicate all artists of korean origin.
But these artists don't do the same genre. So kpop is not a genre.
In korea, Kpop is considered a substitute term for idol groups which are formed by music labels after picking out a group of teenage trainees. Each group has a certain concept or style.
So here the term kpop refers to a method of raising 'idols' or performers.
In the korean sense bts may have been kpop but they stood out too much from the rest of the idol industry in many ways.
    a. BTS debuted with the hiphop genre which prioritises speaking the truth and self expression. Hence their music was from debut, rebellious.
    b. They compose and write their own music.
    c. They didn't rely on korean tv media for promotions like other idol groups. BTS were more internationally famous from the beginning due to their reliance on social media.
    d. They didn't have too many idol restrictions due to them coming from a smaller broke label. They were free to express themselves however they want.
So bts comes from the kpop industry but stands out too much to be grouped inside the industry due to their free, self expressive music.
If BTS music has always been self expressive, their fans are the same. All bts fans/Army support artistry and freedom of expression above all.
We always tell bts "do what you want" and they do it.
    2. BTS, like i said, debuted with the hiphop genre. They were originally a fully Hiphop and Rnb artist who later expanded to do other genres. Their roots will always be hiphop.
This means there are 3 rappers and 4 vocalists in bts.
RM, SUGA and JHOPE, the 3 rappers are also the primary songwriters for bts.
    3. Korean music platforms have rated this album 19+.
So its reception in korea among GP is restricted but it did do decently well on charts due to fan efforts.
But that doesn't matter, this album was purely a form of artistic expression for RM and Armys around the world have been pushing it to the top on their own countries charts.
    So its well received globally.
    4. Now about the song itself.
This album is RM taking out his frustrations about various things.
This song in particular is about how people hold rm and bts to such a high standard in the political sphere.
Because of the international sucess of bts, the korean government has been using their image to promote gov related things, asking them to be sort of diplomats and represent their country.
This especially has put a lot of pressure on RM cus he is the Leader of the group and their spokesperson.
He has stood on the UN podium multiple times standing alongside their president giving speeches and stuff in english, his second language. Its a crazy job switch for a person who was 10 years ago a broke musician living with 7 other kids in a single bedroom.
    The pressure is immense.
Get your ass out the trunk basically means stop leeching off of me.
He telling people off for using his name.
There were cases where people sold his private information for money. From a monk to a train ticket selling person.

From what we know of RM, we ARMYs think this song is him hitting back at the people who use BTS for clout, to get what they want. Some examples he seems to be calling out:
    1. "I'm not a monk" - this seems to reference a disturbing event from last summer. RM went to visit a Buddhist shrine/temple in Korea as a regular tourist. He had a casual conversation with a monk there. He thought it was a private conversation, but the monk immediately contacted the media and blabbed all about the 'private' conversation to draw attention to himself
    2. "Not a f-ing diplomat, I just made it and now they want me to represent" : this seems to be calling out the Korean government. After BTS gained global fame, the government wanted BTS to represent Korea as diplomats to the U.N. and U.S. White House. RM and BTS went along with this, even though RM has said a few times he was frustrated with this because all he wants to do was music, and as the only fluent English speaker in the group all the pressure is on him to not mess up.
    3. "Get your ass outta trunk": this seems to be a general instruction to people who want to ride BTS' coat-tails and use them for clout to just STOP
    4. "Don't care what you talk, b****, you walk like a duck, b****" : this seems to be RM telling everyone who is trying to use BTS for their own gain, but tries to deny they are doing so, that RM doesn't care what they claim, if (as the English proverb goes) 'it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it's a duck' - RM sees by their *actions* that they are attempting to use BTS for their own personal gain
I loved, as you did, all the playfulness RM shows in this video and I think the simple guitar and drum beat is SICK. This song makes me have to get up and groove. Great reaction! You're very intuitive!

Great that you like it. Do listen to the whole album “Right Place, Wrong People”. All the tracks are arranged to be listened to as one continuous narrative. The musical composition is very experimental sonically, including elements of jazz and alternative rhythms and harmonies. Plus he makes it a point to be brutally honest. This is RM returning to his Hiphop roots. After 11 years in the KPOP industry, he is angry at the standards and expectations imposed on idols, boxing them in, and the fact that people, politicians etc, have abused his good will. He spoke at the UN several times to advance the “Love Yourself” Campaign to protect youth against violence, but he resents being seen as a diplomat. He is done being bullied. He produced this solo album before their mandatory military service, which he is now doing until 2025. He is above all a rapper and lyricist.

As you can see from the comments, some people have an issue with BTS being called K-pop or a boyband. But BTS don't actually care, they are just BTS.
BTS always skirted around the edges of the Kpop scene, yes they promoted on Kpop shows but I would say were always different, in a good way.
Idol music on the whole is seen as a bit of a 'factory' and not many are involved in writing/producing. So they were different from the start.
I know you are not really a BTS channel but you would really enjoy their music journey and you see their growth over the years. You have group tracks and now all their solo work to review.
Everyone has already told you about RM so I don't need to.
For this album he worked with various artists, one being San Yawn from BALMING TIGER. They are more of an art collective than a conventional group. You should check out their track SEXY NUKIM featuring RM. Its a trip.

Yes he raps & sings. But he is primarily rap & hiphop, since he was a young teen. BTS was originally planned to be a pure hiphop group, with likely no dancing at all. Hopefully you will check out his latest 2024 album `Right Place, Wrong Person` & you might want to do a reaction review. This latest album, that includes `Groin`, is avante garde, artsy, jazzy, hiphop, bluesy, synthy & rock, going against the grain of what you could consider mainstream when it comes to common music structures, perhaps. But he has other past solo albums & mixtapes, apart from the music he produces with/for BTS for the past decade. I believe the location of this music video shoot was somewhere in London UK, iirc.

The intro is different from the rest of the song as the album is meant to be listened to from top to bottom. It really is a mind trip
For example, the pre-release song “come back to me”, on its own, wasn’t really my jam. But if I listen to it with the rest of the album, it just fits perfectly and is a testament to how much thought was put into this album and the creative direction for it
The whole album might take a few listens, but it really grows on you. You hear something new everytime and it’s just genius

Sorry, but this is an Alternative album, and this song is a hip hop rap song. RM has some songs that he sings on the album like Heaven, and come Back To Me, and a mix of both in NUTS. RM is the Group Leader, Main Rapper, and one of the Main Songwriters. He had San Yawn from Balming Tiger (creative director/producer for the alternative K-Pop group). He featured on a song with them called Sexy Nukim. ARMY's love RM and his album. We celebrating him. BTS started off as a rap group, but changed to a HIP HOP IDOL group and debuted in 2013. Also, their solo projects are whatever the hell they want to do. And all seven have solo projects. There are 3 rappers and 4 vocalists. Exactly. This is what bothers me. People seem to think the only genre of music in Korea is pop. Korea is like any other country- they have tons of genres there. I don’t get why people say “kpop” instead of “korean music.” Just seems like orientalism to me.

I liked watching you break your stereotype about BTS. They are quite different from other groups. They don't fit into a hip-hop group, an idol group, a boyband, no place at all. You can say BTS is its own separate genre. They write music in different genres. For example: rock, hip-hop, r&b, edm, pop, ballad and many others. They also like to mix these genres in their songs. So we ARMYs often don’t know what to expect from them. What genre of music do you like? I'm really looking forward to your journey through BTS, and I hope you like it! I apologize for the mistakes as my English is not very good. Thanks for your reaction!💜💜💜

MV was recorded in UK. If you want to know more about RM and BTS you should react to A Guide to BTS Members : The Bangtan 7 by Taylor Mari. It's a bit outdated but very informative. It's a long video but we will watch it with you. BTS debuted in 2013 so you have 11 years of history to catch up. BTS were different than many other idols and because of BTS many things in kpop changed. Boracity channel has many video explaining BTS and their success.

RM is angry and I’m here for it. He’s calling out haters, but also politicians who used BTS for their own promotions (I’m not a f***ing diplomat), the k-Pop idol industry (I can’t be a monk / I’ll live a good life, but you never know), his identity as the Leader of BTS ( Now that life is easier, they shove responsibilities onto me), and hangers-on (Get you ass outta trunk [quite riding my coattails]).

Loved the reaction video!! just one thing for you to keep in mind: BTS is way beyond kpop at this point. Don't think of them as just kpop idols , bts as a group and as solo artists have always been different from most of what "kpop" is. And btw, kpop literally means korean pop, in this case, RM's album is more of an alternative/ indie sound. Would love to see tou react to the whole thing (the album he just released is called Right place, wrong person) :)

This is definitely not the kind of music you will usually find in kpop! As others have said it's an industry not a genre, and BTS in particular have been working to deconstruct their role as 'idols' for a long time. They've written/spoken a lot about their conflicting feelings about that image over the years. They chose the 'idol' path because it seemed like the only way to survive financially and potentially reach a global audience, but some of the members (including RM) come from an underground hip hop background. They can certainly make catchy pop tunes and put on amazingly polished performances, and when it suits them they can play into the pop star role, but their career as a whole is much more complicated than that!

its not korean pop as in pop genre. kpop is not a genre. and bts group and as solo artists have always been different from most of what "kpop" is. they majority write their own music. and theyve always been rebellious. thats partly why theyre so big they dont stick to idol industry norms. jungkook makes pop music /sometimes/ but thats not all he does. he used to rap in the beginning of bts and he sings a lot of r&b and ballads more than regular pop. he also writes his own music too its just his english songs he didnt write because he wanted to try singing in english for a album. but he chose each song himself. and had the options to rewrite lyrics to those into korean if he wanted.
rm has always been a rapper but has been singing more these last few years. he started in underground rap before he joined bts. hes always written his own music. he is being rebellious in this album however its not his first time being that way hes had many songs in the past that were also rebellious. all the other members are just as talented as jungkook and rm. with their own unique ways and genres etc youll learn more as you go.
just have to remember bts is not kpop or korean pop. they do ALL genres they all write and produce and compose for the group music and for their solo music every member has solo music again very diverse in genre, topics, production etc.

BTS and RM as the leader especially have been used and abused by the government, the Korean and western media and Kpop companies throughout most of their careers, and this song is a big F you to them.
BTS started out as a hip-hop group and they have always talked about societal issues, mental health and their struggles, and they have also always donated to charities a lot and even have an ongoing campaign with UNICEF where they have ongoing funding initiatives like donating a percentage of their album sales straight to UNICEF, they have also spoken at the UN several times and at the White House, but this has made people think that bts are some gods who should fix all of the world's problems.
People often view bts as politicians rather than artists, when all they wanted was to make music and speak about the thing's they wanted to.
Now every time something happens people want to use BTS, if something is happening in the world BTS needs to speak up and fix it, if Korea needs help with something BTS has to help the government and BTS has to represent Korea, the government has used them as their diplomats without ever giving anything back, even when they're not expecting bts to be present and working for them they use bts' name, BTS get dragged into every issue and RM is done with it, that's what this song is about.

    3) Diana sings in 6 languages : English, French, Russian, German, Spanish, Arabic and any musical genre;
    4) incredible charisma, artistry and living of any song;
    5) a vocal range of 4 octaves;

You have to remember that BTS are so big that they are at the point where they can do quite much what they want - And you have reacted to their non-idol side only .
This is JK and RM, not idols & part of BTS, but solo artists who are so rich they can do what ever they want - if their company would not backing their album up, they could make it themselves and 300 million ARMY would still buy it. Like there is no way they can flop.
That's why I'm saying they are not idols here.
They are solo artists who do what they want with their albums.

Idol industry do not apply to BTS anymore. While Idols are controled and dictated by their company BTS from the very start are given artistic freedom. They write and produce their own songs. When you take a look into their solo careers they all are showing different colors and flavors, RM is a poet more than an idol. BTS did not disband. They are all doing military service at the moment with the oldest member Jin being discharged ina few days. Thus continuing BTS solo work until all his brothers are discharged. BTS has always been vocal when it comes to their opinion and RM plays a major role in that.

BTS are kpop and yet they are not really kpop they are more a hybred and yes they used this kind of language which is not normal with the Kpop Industry. They don't follow Kpop Industry rules plus they've always had complete Creative Freedom. The only thing they can't do in South Korea is show their Tattoo's on South Korean TV so have to cover the me. Although RM only has one tattoo they all have the number 7 which is their 'Friendship tattoo they did for their 10year anniversary.
