Homestead Brooklyn: model creates urban forest in her NYC flat
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- Summer Rayne Oakes moved to New York City as a model, not expecting it to be permanent, but 15 years and over 1,100 plants later, she's created an urban forest in the Brooklyn apartment she calls home.
“Growing up in the country, close to nature and my mother's collection of National Geographic magazines, I had never imagined myself living in the city for so long… I think a lot of people are like me-rural transplants in an urban environment, seeking a way to live more sustainably and in sync with nature. Even for those of us who have never stepped barefoot on a blade of grass, there's something inherently in us that is connected to nature-on a much deeper, biological level.”

„Hey neighbor, I go on vacation. Could you take care of my plants for a week?“
„Sure....hey wait a minute....aaargh...!“
made me laugh out loud! just what I was thinking!
Lolol!!
lol
Hahaha
🤣🤣🤣
She’s meticulous about selecting and caring for her plants. She has an extensive knowledge and passion. Thank Goddess for that!
she seems so calm, i love her energy
Sadia, I thought of you while watching this video because you have a similar energy as this lady. I’ve posted many of your videos on FB one with a caption about how much I admire you and your soothing presence. Then here you are :) Like minds? :) By the way, this is my very first UA-cam comment
Love your visions Summer ! You have created such a beautiful space with greenery life and calmness in a busy city. Loved that you even give Kipee a loving home to live and took care of her and gave her the life in your apartment that few would. Even in her short life , she really had the best environment. She’s a lucky girl to have crossed path with such a loving mommy!
Super admirable and commendable person. Thanks for making this video. Stay well everyone.
I see calmness in your home. I’m in love with the greenery.
So beautiful and peaceful ❤️
excellent....my roots NYC
ROCK ON FREAKS
I will be following you now. I live in the most Southern part of Mississippi. We live approx. 35 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. We live on 2 acres and have had, too numerous to count, types of plants. There are 11 oaks, which attracted us to this property: 9 are live oaks n two water oaks, they are all mature.
My husband is 69 and I am 73. He has an auto immune disease, Systemic Scleraderma I Raynauds Phenomena and I, well more blessed, just have arthritis, fibromyalgia, n neuropathy from a nerve damaged during total knee teplacement. Mine is more pain n more limitations. Saying all that was because be n I have had gardens all over our property for years.
The past three yrs have been tough, and it's so discouraging to not be able to do as much.
I have some gardens around my oaks and it's easy for me to handle. I love all kinds of things I corporated here n there. Right now two of our great grand daughters, their mom, myself, n their Mimi are working on a make believe area where gnomes n fairies live. A couple of items there are bought from the $ store, but we are going to be making homemade items.
If you would like some clippings from some of them, I'd love to send them to you.
My Stokes Aster was beautiful this year. I have loads of day lillies, cannas, I have a plant that looks like a mock orange, but it has Never bloom ed. I'm stumped!. Spider plants, ajuga, phlox, chenille, ferns, (from the sides of the roads here in the country too. Clovers, Ivy, green n yellow n green. Banana, monkey grass, large n small. Pompos grass, to name a few. One more thing. I'm sure you r familiar with red tops. Well. We have two n I've let them just have their way and grow, reaching very tall. They flower, seeds fall off, and sprout underneath. When they grow to about 1 or 2 inches, I put them n sell them. I love propagating, and layering .
Sorry I got so carried away. Thanks for your channel. May God bless you n your family. Again, let me know if you'd like anything .
In Jesus Name Margie from Southern Mississippi
I have chickens and an inside pet pig I love my animals and I have 2 dogs small homestead that's so wonderful your apartment is great I love plants and gardening
Wow...❤️❤️❤️❤️amazing...
Obsessed!
I have 57 plants and i hate watering them, takes so long. Question is, how does she water those plants?!
She has the quadrivium on her bookshelf, that's cool
Whether growing plants and caring for them full time is your thing or not, whether anybody’s obsession is your thing or not, just watching someone talk about their true calling in life is such a beautiful experience. Their passion for it, the peace they’ve achieved realizing it and the way it lights up their being is so attractive.
One of the best comments
I have ever read it is really
Great to see someone find
Something in life that bring true
Joy
True words!
So well said!
id even say its her upbringing that have added that charm to it. theres a certain aura to ppl that have grown up on farms that city folks will never have. a sense of stability, a calm spirit, with a smile that was never afraid to be shown again and again. that's summer.
Exactly..💕
I love to see someone's personality in their homes and not a copy of a magazine or somebody else's house
Youre so right
Me 9 minutes in: Dang, this thing is 30 minutes?? I thought we were just checking out her apartment.
Also Me: keeps watching... lol
Summer Rain Oaks??/ The plant addict????

💯 Haaa! Fine point!
She is a different and special human being. Reminding us so much about various aspects of ourselves. Glad she exist and amongst us.
Tons of unsexy and old folks grow amazing plants
@@windflowerrainstorm6497 she has also written books and makes ecology her lifestyle. i don't think he was referring to her sexiness.
Cassandra Vogan but if it was an old fat man would he have commented that tho
Yes
@@jimjim9505 Actually, I think he would have said the same thing, even if the subject were, as you say, old and fat. Enough with the assumptions.
i didn't realize poison ivy is such a warm and charming person in real life.
Kat lol!
Nice but deadly...
Summer is the best. My apartment is full of plants partly thanks to her.
she could just work in a plant shop/garden and save all this money, time and work to create one at home
Same, lol.
She's the most fascinating person, I could listen and learn from her all day. A wonderful human being - so refreshing.
she literally is MISS EARTH.
Oh yeah
Maybe Poison Ivy in disguise ... for whatever reason, I always felt sympathy for Poison Ivy, even if she's supposed to be evil.
You should move to Brazil and replant the amazon forest.
Does anyone feel calmer and more relaxed after watching this video?🙂🌱🌿🍁
31:40 mins didn't feel so long....
Nope! It's too cluttered for my taste!
@@ellam2490 I’m with you on this one, I found the video very interesting but not calming. Personally, I need a visual that has fewer things in it. But, it made her happy, as well as other viewers.
I’ve been watching Summer for years “Plant one on me” channel she always has such excellent, informative content.
Thanks just subscribed x
Same! Two of my favorite worlds collide here!!
Thx!🤗
Love her vibrant green tea kettle too!
I’m surprised she doesn’t use filtered water?! Honestly I’d never even drink the water in NY
more people like her and the world would be a better place
Totally agree.
too many people like her and we would be living in caves
💙☘️🌴🌵🌿🍃🌾🦋
And green too. Don't forget to mention, air will be more fresh and breathable
There are a lot of people like her in this world - they are called hoarders.
I like how raw the video is. It really makes you feel you are walking around the house with her. It didn't try to cut or added too much music to fill in the story, which makes it relaxing to watch.
As a child, my favorite 'trip' was to visit the university greenhouse. The moment I entered, the smell was wonderfully overwhelming as growing things have a marvelous odor (like rain and cut grass) and wrap you in that world. I think her home is a dream world that very few people are able to live in. Bravo to someone that had choices, and went with what made a real home for herself.
I have been watching Plant One On Me for many years. An inspiration! I am growing more plants inside and loving having them. During the Stay-In-Place order I brought my office plants home to create an oasis that I have worked in. This has made a huge difference to my psyche during the isolation. Tremendously grateful to Summer for her work.
Summer Rayne is the Goddess of nature. Bless her soul everyday for being such a beautiful inspiration to the rest of us.
Me: a humble gay man already deeply in love with Summer.....also me: not knowing Summer had a degree in entomology, and now I gotta figure out how imma break it to myself that I have to marry her one day 😂
Check out those clavicles, might work out
River Kressler u really do!😂😂😂😂😂
I cannot blame you. She’s just so lovable. 😊
Ur too cute! I think she has a wonderful spirit and a great aura
@River Kressler What a sweet post in the nasty swamp of the Internet. 👏
"I've seen a lot of chicken poop in my life, and it doesn't phase me that much"
ATTA GIRL !!!
chickens and parrots are good for you along with lots of plants.
@@ralphchristianson actually, it can work - I have a bird nest in a corner of a window in my room. Free guano source!
*faze*
Wow! I've seen a feature on her before but it didn't do it justice in showing how many plants she really had! It's like living in a forest. She seems at peace in her home.
I highly recommend her UA-cam channel! She is superb!
My husband and daughter began planting, Milk Weed plants in our backyard and now it’s a Monarch Paradise. It wasn’t automatic though, my daughter would manually kill bugs that wanted to either eat the newly eggs or eat the leaves, this Spring we’re struggling with flies that are parasites to the caterpillars. But we’re still working at keeping the whole process going. Thank you for your gentle touch, you have what nature needs and for your hard work. Bravo for your beautiful and gentle strength to keep your dreams going.
I hope you're in a migratory destination or you're doing more harm than good
Grow Native save the world. Glad to hear you are working on your tiny part.
My son did the same
@@SunshineCountryChickens Not true...migratory butterflies such as Monarchs and Painted Ladies...need to lays eggs (successive generations) all along the migratory path.

(really wonder how you find all amazing video subjects...you contact them or vs...!!!) i am a city girl, afraid of bugs and dust and got no green thumb...but will follow her channel to learn and open up all possibilities that nature can offer...thanks you again !!!
RESPECT FOR THIS WOMAN! SHE HAS SUCH LOVE FOR PLANTS AND ANIMALS. LOVE THE CHICKEN!
What a wonderful person - looks like name determined destiny
A really interesting woman. Really big space for New York. Some really beautiful plants but she lost me at those creepy crawlers. Very interesting getting to meet her so thank you for this video.
i wonder how much a space like this wound cost today. obviously she's lived in Brooklyn for 15 years. Which means she probably aquired the flat before the major gentrification of these neighbourhoods in New York took place.
She has the healthiest addiction I’ve ever seen. What a lovely and sweet woman. Gonna subscribe to her channel now. Thank you for this sweet and inspiring video ❤️
I am in awe, and, an indigo dyer. Love that dress. Smart, ethical and green.
I saw a similar dress at Primark the other day for the fraction of the price.
Cylais thanks! I would enjoy finding the floral white dress and then dye the blue pattern on it
@@hnttakata713 I also love this dress. Do you guys know the designer? Lovely!
I've been following her on UA-cam for years and she's really taught me how to become better to the planet through plant care. I try to upcycle as many fast-moving consumer goods packaging products to reuse for propagating or composting. Everything truly is connected, people and the biosphere, and once your eyes have been opened, there's no going back.
This is VERY impressive, I must say! I wish I had a situation where I could do this kind of thing. I tried growing plants on my patio , but ran into so much opposition from the management and the yuppies in the complex that I finally gave up. The yuppies were all control freaks, formerly from gated communities and homeowners' associations, and couldn't live without trying to control others. The patio growers in my building were originally six, then four, then two, then one, then none. It's sad, because the place is such a yuppie wasteland. All the shrubbery and most of the trees have been cut out. There isn't a blade of grass that would DARE be out of place. Control freaks are such pathetic creatures--no matter what they're trying to control others about.
Isn't that even more reason to rebell? 🙈I'd probably let my plants grow wild on purpose 😂
Can you grow plants inside your apartment? Hopefully there's no rules against that.
I follow you both and I totally thought I was watching a Summer Rayne's video at first. I was so confused hahah
The audio engineering when splicing the other videos into this piece was incredible. There was no difference in the level or quality of the audio. Ms. Oakes is extremely knowledgeable about plants and her apartment gardens are spectacular, but her life seems to be very solitary. It's not for me but more power to her. I hopes she gets a new chicken to have as a pet.
When I first saw the apt. in the video I thought “well, a little nuts” but after watching the whole thing I’m thinking “focused, obsessive, but not nuts.” She’s so smart, really interesting to hear, the lengthy just video flew by. I had so many questions at the end about practicalities like watering without damaging walls/floors/furnishings, how the landlord felt about the bugs and of course the time it took to take care of them all. My own esthetic is 180 degrees different from her’s, but I enjoyed spending time with this intelligent young woman. Also, I now feel a wee bit better about my own collections...
Needless to say, I love all her plants, but that lime green paint color in her kitchen is one of the best features, that old sink is fabulous and those plants are amazing. I love the way she sits on that cute chair and looks out the window while drinking her tea, looking at those amazing little birds doing what they do. I hope she never ever moves out of her apt. It's such a wonderland of plant beauty along with all the colors of her things she's got in there.
I have a plant addiction and I often gift plants to others so they are not too critical. Its hard to decorate with plants because wherever you put them there must be light. Her videos are very informative and relaxing.
Ngl I find the amount of plants in this apartment to be cluttered and overwhelming, but I respect her knowledge and ability to nurture her plants!
Yep, she is essentially a hoarder.
@Loraine Mohar yes you are right. but the results are the same.
@Hineni John3:16 vg
Same
The neediness of living things that depend on me is exhausting, I am impressed with her, but I have 1 cat and 10 plants and aahhhhh
Some sort of madness, but a very nice one!
We're all a bit mad here :)
@@lorainemohar5791 True! I’ve lost track of how many Interior Design and Architecture channels I’m now following. 😬 I’d like to blame it on the pandemic, but I don’t think I can use that excuse for ALL of it!
It's amazing to find someone that lives so close to me be so earthy. I live in the projects in Bushwick and to find greenery is tough. I usually walk to McCarren Park just to ground myself. It brought tears to my eyes to find out someone like you lives in an area I visit often and into fashion too...omg. Thank you for sharing, you have given me hope that I can come across people like you right where I live. 😊
outstanding level of knowledge and really smart woman, great video
Why would a plant person live in a cement forest?? I ran the biggest greenhouse in the world for a couple years,, she is a walking book,, . Brainy, & beautiful,!!!
Richard Sabean with her smarts she probably enjoys interacting with diverse, creative, brainy type of people in that city. She can meet different types of people who satisfy every part of her interests and intellect. In the country, that wouldn’t happen.
Peri as a country dweller I can vouch for that. There is often a social desert in the country, and a plant desert in the city. It takes some effort to balance that out.
As an apartment dweller who discovered my plant mama soul during this pandemic, Summer is so inspiring! Thank you for this beautiful film...
YOU INSPIRE ME. I AM MOVING INTO A 3 BEDROOM 3 STORY CONDOMINIUM IN DOWNTOWN BANGKOK THAILAND AND I WILL HAVE SO MUCH ROOM I COULD PROBABLY GROW MY OWN RAIN FOREST. WHEN I SAW YOU HAD A PLATYCERIUM (STAGHORN FERN) I KNEW YOU HAD TO BE A GOOD PERSON. LOL
I HAVE A DEGREE IN AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING BUT HAVE NEVER PUT IT TO GOOD USE SO THIS MAY BE THE TIME TO START. MY CONDO IS ABOUT AS MUCH AS YOURS IS ON EACH FLOOR SO IT WILL TAKE ME A WHILE TO CATCH UP WITH YOU. I WILL SEND YOU PICTURES AS IT PROGRESSES.
I love Summer and follow her channel. She has alot of great content. I didn't know about her history, so that was interesting. Thank you! She has great values. Love how she reminds us of how evil it is to destroy the planet.
This is like the awesome crossover, we've all been waiting for!
The fact that this appartement cost 4k+ per month is insane
Peanuts compared to HK.
And my 75sqm 1920s apartment in Poznan, Poland costs $590 per month. :)
@@ash3rr 😮 I havent seen that price in the U.S. since 2005. Studio is $750+ and that's for a ghetto trash area you really don't want to be in.

That's a pretty good size apartment (looks like she has two bedrooms) and the rent is nothing out of the ordinary in NYC.
Ahhhhh........ Plant Porn at its finest!!!
What a lovely, remarkable woman! She brings the country into the city..
Thank you for sharing this fascinating person. Very interesting.
Plants and animals are much more tolerable and nicer than some humans.... I don't blame her.
How it's possible to keep all your plants so clean of dust ? Amazing ! 👌
Maybe with her hose set up? Just guessing.🙂
Raz Stefan I live rurally and my house is crazy dusty inside, but I bet living in a big city is less dusty.
Madagascar Hissing Cockroach - Well I expect that's ok? - but introducing alien species/varieties into the US, or anywhere, has been problematic-to-disastrous in many cases. So one trusts she does this with CARE!
In a climate like Brooklyn, they won't be able to live without human care.
She did study the subject :P
Iain Sanders She studied entomology.
The case for NYC? Once all the rich people move to Connecticut and Florida, there will be thousands of free luxury houses there for the taking!
Police, Fire Dept, and general economic activity NOT included. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wall it off and drop in one Snake Plissken
No! don't go to Florida....not until I've bought there, otherwise I won't be able to afford there either:-)
I bet she misheard photoshoot for photosynthesis. That's why she's also a model.
.... I killed a cactus
This women needs to stay in the country and go crazy in a large garden .
I adore this woman! Her videos was one of my sparks to start my own houseplant journey 💚🌿
Nice ideas but wouldn’t it be easier to live in the country side/ house with garden ? Just saying...
Some ppl r just pshycologically addicted to thecity life
I was thinking the same thing, she needs a garden and more space her plants are real nice.
Wow, you have taken indoor plants to the max. I have never seen so many plants in an apartment. Caring for these must take some time. Bet the air in there is like a hyperbaric chamber, very healing. Except for the chicken.
The chicken seems relaxed.
I laughed when she said this is one of my favorites. Really? Looks like a whole apartment of favorites.
Awesome, it is really a pleasure seeing the plant life in a concrete jungle tucked away and being cared for between ,on and off the walls that wall us from the nature outside. It is this intentional space creation and utilisation to grow plants in a creative and freestyle way that I admire. The additional information about the plants are a huge help too.
Oh Wow! I love your home! I know that you have the freshest air in the entire city. I love the country, in a city especially New York City I would be terrified. Love Love and so inspirational! Love your chicken.

Just another beautiful treasure in Brooklyn that makes it impossible to call any other place home. What a glorious video! The love that she has for her plants and critters is not something that everyone will understand. I do. Being a cat lady is often misunderstood, but the world needs more caretakers of sentient beings now more than ever before! Brava... 🌺💚💗
Thank you for finding such interesting people and sharing them with us. Hope you and your family are well.
So what I’m hearing is that she needs a roommate :)))
Kristen and Summer together, my two favorite youtubers! I love that!
Reminds me of movie Green Card. Enjoyed this. I put all plants out in summer. Probably need a few indoor permanent residents!🤔
I love that she has nurtured and lived with so many plants but personally, I won't be able to deal with all the bugs and creepy crawlies. I've got 3 big (mid-sized) plants in my apartment and I have more than enough trouble dealing with bugs. Kudos to her though.
To begin I live in the country so growing and having my garden is a must I love every aspect of it..you have a wonderful outlook on the essence of it all..stay connected to your true self..your garden apartment is absolutely beautiful and tranquil...I love every inch...p.s. i am a tea drinker well..HAVE A BRIGHT DAY.....
Amazing! I always have problems growing plants in the kitchen. With chinese cooking the heat always kill the surrounding plants. Also hanging plants from ceiling proved to be a challenge for me for watering, it also wet the floor. It must be real hard work for her, a full time job to maintain her indoor garden.👍
I could almost feel her passion for nature...Summer has such a beautiful soul
Very informative, as always...

Wow your so beautiful 😀
I absolutely love this apartment, her style, and all of her gorgeous plants. I will be following her on UA-cam and Instagram. Thank you Kirsten, this was so beautifully done!
My place is not the best place for a plant. Very dark. No natural light. If I moved or got evicted, they would be cumbersome.
I always worry about the possibility of my plants getting thrown away and destroyed if I cross state lines because some moron with a badge considers my house plants an invasive species, like they do with food stuffs and seeds.
Your just amazing and I so hope you know it...such a beautiful caring heart! ❤️🥰
You are SUCH an inspiration!!! God bless you ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
