I got an old iron fry pan from my elderly aunt, it was over 80 yrs old and it was caked on the outside with baked on residue. My husband was going to burn a brush pile and I pitched it in there. Some 12 hrs later a very CLEAN grey pan was fished out of the ashes. I washed with a hot soapy dishwater then seasoned as you instructed. It is one of my favorite fry pans now.

Although I learned to cook with cast iron I didn't own any when I got married. My grandma went to the barn and found an old skillet that looked as bad as the dutch oven you showed. She told me how to clean and season it. It took a good week or two to get it just like I wanted it - lots of elbow grease. She knew if I had to work hard to clean and season it I would appreciate it all the more. Over 53 years later that is still my favorite skillet.
For wedding gifts, I always give a 10 1/4 skillet and a dutch oven. They'll last a lifetime.

I once heard that women would bring their iron cook ware to pine wood fires. I have never actually talked to anyone that has done that, so I don't understand what the reason was. Yes, the south is wonderful.

@@jimturpin6503 I have put my cast iron skillet in campfires.
Not to season....as this removes some of the seasoning. Cast iron can have build up on the bottom. What causes this I can only guess. Here in my area of Texas when we put cast iron in fires we call it 'burning off'. It removes all the black build up on the bottom.
Takes years of lots of cooking for this build up to accumulate.

So Sweet Brenda I just love you and I know you call the burners on the stove top ‘eyes’ and you said you didn’t know why you called it that but because your Mama called it the eye you did too - well, I just watched a guy talk about antique cast iron pans and cookware and evidently back when folks used wood cook stoves the numbers that were sometimes on the skillets corresponded with the size of the ‘eye’ or hole in the stove top and the skillet would fit down inside of it to cook😃. So there you go! That’s why so many people our age call the burners eyes😊. God bless you girl!!!😘

I am moving back to my childhood home. I found some old skillets in Mother’s pantry. My older sister told me we needed to put them in the ‘burn barrel’. (Have you ever heard of a burn barrel)? We did that to one and it did not do much for it. I told her I would find Miss Brenda tonight, she will tell me what to do. I knew I had watched the video before. I told her to trust me, when I got all moved in I would cook breakfast for her. Thank you So Much! I often tell her that she may be the oldest, but the baby knows some things too! When I show her how pretty they are, I will talk about beauty from the ashes. ❤️

The best cast iron you can buy is the one you will use. That is an old saying that is very true. Some brands may have more monetary value than others, but only the ones you actually use have real value. I have Lodge cast iron pans and use them all the time. They have never failed me and I just love them. A friend has a cast iron pan that has no name on it at all and she wouldn't part with it for any name brand. :)

I dont collect but only what I will use..but the cast iron craze over the past few years has driven prices through the roof ! When I want to clean off the buildup on the outside of my cast iron skillets, I put them in my oven when I do the automatic self cleaning for three hours or so. Of course, when I take them out, they have to be seasoned again by cooking bacon or other greasy meats. I start out by putting a little olive oil on a paper towel and greasing inside the skillet.
But I know what Brenda means when you put olive oil on the skillets and then put them in the oven for an hour or two on low heat. It DOES cause them to become sticky. I learned that the hard way. I won't be doing that again.
I use stainless steel to clean my skillet all the time. It helps to prevent the hard grease buildup if you clean them well with the stainless steel cleaning pads.

What she meant was when we think we are faced with illness, sadness, or just feeling bad for ourselves, there is always somebody else that has great suffering. Example: we may turn our ankle over but somebody else might break their ankle. Im sure you all no what I'm trying to say.

Hey Missy, My Momma used Steelwool first Sprayed then Sprayed with Vinegar, Let it set all day than Soaked it Used Steel wool Constantly After first washing! Then she used Ajax cleanser,Threw water in back yard! Then sand Paper on it! Then back to steel wool & Vinegar, repeated process a few times. We almost had fire pitting it in oven to bake with the crisco! Came out sticky! If you use Crisco," method dont put it," on bottom of Pan can ignite! Just, use lots of bacon to season pan! She also said to never use Dish soap inside it after seasoning, out sides ok. Just wipe with the bacon grease, from time, to time! ❤ Shar

Thank you Miss Brenda, now I"m trying to bring back my cast iron pan to look like new again. Thank you for all the laughs, sharing your recipes watching you cooking with Banks and all that you do Miss Brenda. You remind me a lot of my Granny. She was a great cook. Haha now I want to go get some of my mother in-laws old cast irons and bring them back to life once again. Take care God Bless

I found an old cast iron skillets that had so many coats of rust and grease all over inside and out. so much cooked on grease caked on the outside. I rinsed that out and placed in my oven. Turned that oven to clean. When it was done, that pan was just like new. I seasoned the pan and it has been a great pan.
