After watching for the first time in a few years, I've changed my mind about the meaning behind this. Every Stromae fan knows the background of this song/video, but to me it can also describe living with a depressed parent. Notice how the son pushes the car with his dad at the wheel, or how he's in the bathroom while dad takes a shower. Almost as if their roles were switched and now he's the one taking care of dad, guiding him through daily tasks. And no matter what the kid does, he just can't grab his dad's attention since he's too numb/in too much pain to care about the world outside. Then at the end the son becomes numb too, from the lack of a father and anyone else who could have been there for him.
The song is about the absence of a father, a story the singer himself experienced. Born of a Belgian mother and a Rwandan father, he had a fickle father, killed during the Rwandan genocide of 1994. The singer confessed during an interview to have cried during the writing probably for the lived side.

Many people don't seem to understand the serious backstory behind this song. The father of Stromae died during the Rwandan Genocide of 1991, thus making our beloved singer grow up without a father.
It's not about that, it's about an absent father (as in "not able to be a father"). There's a verse in the song saying that everybody is able to make a baby, but not everybody is able to make a father.

This song describes my story exactly. I lost my dad at 2 months of my first birthday (I was a 10 months old baby). Growing up I just kept asking my mum all the time where my dad is because all my friends have daddy and I felt different. I was always sad to see my friends with their dads. @@lahxhensem8757 nope, they won't have my full gratitude if they're bad. They always repeat the sentence "you're old, you know what's right or wrong" even though their sons aren't old just so that they can escape from responsibility, and then they wanna get treated like they're father of the year.
Woaw. It was a long time since I did not watch this clip and in my memories the video has something like 2-300 millions views which is already amazing. But now, although the song is 8 years old, it's at 800M !!!! I guess it never gets old
Something I find fascinating about the choreography of this video is the differences of the types of fathers and sons shown through their dance. In the first pair, the paperboys in pink uniforms, the father and son do a dance that relies heavily on partnership. A dance meant for two people to work and they help each other to pull it off. The second pair, the garbage collectors in orange, are perfectly in sync performing the same dance but separately. One person could do it solo but they're both a mirror of each other. They even do elegant ballet style leaps and turns that feel in direct contrast to the rigid robot style of the business men in the yellow and green suits. With the business man he's not dancing with his son or mirroring him, but trying to teach him and force him to do it his way even if the son is unhappy about it. But he still tries to have that connection with his father. The way the fluid ballet moves are cut in between the stiff pop and lock type moves are amazing and amplify the different ways of parenting via dance. But of course whether the sons are helping, mirroring, or learning from their fathers, they still have fathers who engage with them unlike the boy who is observing all these interactions. This is an amazing video. 💙🇫🇷 I want to learn french just to better appreciate stromae's videos but the language seems too difficult for me. 😞
I'm sorry, I'm italian and my english is not so good but I want to tell you this story. This morning I woke up and I listened to this song then I saw your comment. Is 6AM, I read this beautiful comment and I decide to rewatch this music video. I litteraly cried for one our. Is so beautiful, THANK YOU :)
Even the only female duo seem to have a particular feel to their dance, like the duality of beauty and strength in a woman. Their moves, similar to the garbage collectors, are also completely syncronized down to the outfits they wear, even walking dogs of the same breed. It's probably because the daughter is notably older than any of the sons -- most of the boys look from pre-teens to mid-teens, along with the subject of the song -- and thus has had the most time to grow up to be just like her mother.
With a little training you could know the basics of French, I am French and I totally agree with you stromae shows us the realities of life in one song
What's so sad about this video is that you could see the kid's potential. Because his dad wasn't there for him, he had to find his own way- and he created a beautiful and unique style of expression along the way. All the other kids were exact copies of their parental figure- but because the main character broke that mold, instead creating a style based around the absence of his father. It's so sad because for a minute, you think he's really going somewhere- and then he gives in to his doubts. He feels like he can't be a real, full person without a dad. He feels that he could never become a 'real man' because he had no one to mold his life after. It's so sad that he doesn't realize that you don't have to have a good dad to become a good person.
wow i never thought about it like that but reading those lines as i was hearing the song. chills started running down my spine as i realised how accurate it was and i started feel really dumb for not having seen it that way yet. you gave even more meaning to this song, thank you for opening my eyes.
Aw- I'm glad I was able to share my interpretation- although you're not dumb because it's not the only interpretation that can be taken from the song/ video:) Yeah- that theme really just stood out to me because I know people who never really had a good home life. They feel like they'l never be able to get out of that cycle or be any good- and it's so sad. Glad I could help you see the song from that perspective:)
That the boy solidified at the end is the most painful of it all. I wouldn't even argue that it's following only. I can imagine another world after the video that the boy 'follows' his father as a way to save him. ...call me an optimist but...
Now i'm 11. I forgot how he sounded Like. His smile. All i remember is he's face. Kinda. I have depressions SOMETIMES. and i changed alot. Stromae's music is in my heart.
@@yogurtgaming0 hey :) if he's the one that left you, then it's not worth crying. my father didn't care for me in 16 years and to this day he never spend a cent on me. But I don't care anymore, I don't need a father who wouldn't care about me anyways.

Im from Greece and I don't know how to speak French. But i wanted to know what the lyrics mean and i googled it. I am wondering how many of that kind of songs we are enjoing while others crying....
Btw for those of you haven't already figured it out, this song is based on Stromae's own father and personal childhood life. I see that several people base the song off of the death of his father, but I feel that something that is unspoken is how it was likely (not confirmed, since Stromae doesn't like talking about his past history) that his father wasn't always at home, and usually at work. With the death of his father from cause of the Rwandan Genocides, the effect it had on him was further emphasized. However, don't take it wrong and think that his father, in-real-life, didn't actually care about him as with sources proving that he was simply engrossed in work, with his death in the genocides even being that he was visiting the family at that time. Again, the emotions portrayed against his father for this cannot be confirmed.

Thank you for this beautiful comment

It's so sad that he doesn't realize that you don't have to have a good dad to become a good person.
something like I was thinking
wow i never thought about it like that but reading those lines as i was hearing the song.
chills started running down my spine as i realised how accurate it was and i started feel really dumb for not having seen it that way yet.
you gave even more meaning to this song, thank you for opening my eyes.
Aw- I'm glad I was able to share my interpretation- although you're not dumb because it's not the only interpretation that can be taken from the song/ video:)
Yeah- that theme really just stood out to me because I know people who never really had a good home life.

It's not a Rwandan Genocide, it's a Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
