- Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords Of The Yardbirds. I've had requests to feature some legendary music from The Yardbirds, and also a number of requests to feature more music from the three absolute guitar legends that played with this historic group, so I hope this lesson fills all of those requests, as this is the first time I've featured them on the LNL channel - let's dive in!
This lesson revolves around five classic albums by The Yardbirds, and sheds some light on each famous incarnation of the group in the mid/late 1960s. Including examples from Clapton, Beck, and Page as this lesson unfolds. This includes chord-based and rhythm guitar parts from songs such as Got To Hurry, Jeff's Boogie, Smile On Me, Rack My Mind, I Ain't Got You, along with looking at both the Clapton and Beck version of the Howlin' Wolf classic Smokestack Lightning.
Needless to say, if you're a fan of The Yardbirds, an Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and/or Jimmy Page fan, a fan of classic blues-rock from the 1960s, a player searching for some new chord moves and riffs to play around with, or maybe you're just curious what all the fuss is about - this lesson is totally for you! Always thought it interesting that it was the English musicians that took the blues and amped it up.
They pretty much educated Americans about the blues, which was largely underground at that time.

"Jeff's Boogie" is Beck's version of "Guitar Boogie" by Chuck Berry, released in 1958 - eight years before the Yardbird's version. It's almost the exact same song, but they didn't credit Berry for composing it.
You can't talk about this on the internet. Zeppelin is the only band allowed to be trashed on the internet for not crediting songs or elements of songs composed by other people.
Jeff never had any songwriting talent so what do you expect, there’s a reason why max middleton, jan hammer, tony hymas, and jennifer batten were writing for him

And those “mostly” single note blues riffs (looking at you, Page) demonstrate the differences of their respective style so well.
and lets not forget...Jimmy Page only got in on the yardbirds because they needed a bass player....Jimmy played badass bass at first...there'S some good video clips on YT from those heady days....check out the scene of the film "blowup"....cheers.

What grabbed me, with Smokestack (and mid Shapes of Things) was the bass line intro... Page came into the band as bass player when Paul Samwell Smith first dropped out... fwiw dept😂

Tom Morello had to have been inspired by Jimmy’s riff in ‘Smile on Me’ as he does the exact same riff in the Pre Chorus of ‘Bulls on Parade’ 🔥👏🏽 🔥👏🏽 🔥

Jimmy tried to sell the band to the record company's as "the NEW Yardbirds". That's where some DECCA exec. said that'll go over like a Lead Ballon. Old story. But I loved the Yardbirds. This is a fun one. Thanks Dave😅
