We often get into arguments with one another for millions of different reasons, but how often do we genuinely change the other persons mind? Most times, facts don't change minds. But if facts don't change minds, what does?

I learned this sentence a while ago "I don't know" and it changed how i argued with others. Sometimes I say it and then truly listen. Because of that sentence people explain their point of view fully and mostly i come to the conclusion we have way more in common then first thought. Learn this sentence and the world will open itself to you.

Its worth keeping this in mind in both directions; The thesis idea that Facts don't change minds, but people do.
When you surround yourself with people who believe in falsehoods; you render your own self more open to believing those same falsehoods.
That isn't to say that you should separate yourself from them, quite the opposite. But it is something to keep in mind. It can be easy to shift your position a little bit at a time, taking a more neutral stance than one you honestly believed for the sake of belonging or for fear of losing friendships
In all things; Keep your mind open to the possibility that you are mistaken. But be aware of the reasons you believe what you do, and don't let your mind be changed unless those reasons are properly challenged.

8:32 This is why I hate when people say “the science is settled, just trust the scientists and don’t question anything” but the whole point of science is about using hypotheses to learn new information, so it’s never really settled. The reason we’ve come so far is by questioning what we know, so we need to keep doing so. Of course, as in all things, there’s a balance. Question doesn’t mean ignore. If you really wanna find the closest truth to any issue, read research from multiple people, multiple perspectives, and then come to your own conclusion.
I know that scares people. “What if they come to the wrong conclusion? They can’t be trusted to form their own opinion they should just listen to what they’re told” Well I think more people would believe the scientific consensus if they read all perspectives on these types of issues. Trying to prevent people from reading conspiracies might make them just believe that it’s true even further, but encouraging them read the conspiracy along with the scientific research and rebuttal will likely help them to realize the conspiracy is false

Uhhhh. I feel so much emotion coming out from your text (which is just my interpretation, I know).
Are... you frustrated with how people are so willing to ignore scientific literature, rather than trying to review, explore, and discuss it?
Because what helps me keep perspective is the... assumption (for lack of a better word) that all ideas are like religion.
They are survival strategies that individuals have "chosen" to hold onto. It is emotional, it is tribal, it is irrational.
If your ideas or science do not serve their cause they have chosen... it's likely that they won't even want to hear it.
For instance, me telling you this, could be me just talking to a brick wall. Especially if you think that what I'm saying isn't helping you.
And those thoughts come from emotion.
I think it might help you to remember that we are really communicating with emotions, and ideas are just a way we are expressing our emotions to each other.
Sure, people may be idiots, but that's just the road they want to walk down. Aren't we all idiots in each other's eyes anyway?

    • @DHawkBeats
      @DHawkBeats 2 роки тому +5

@@roscojenkins7451 exactly that’s why the emphasis is researching from a wide variety of outputs, not just ones that say what you agree. Regardless I believe it will bring you closer to the truth, as long as you know and are hopefully somewhat educated in how to research topics

@@uglystupidloser I agree mostly with what you’re talking about, but my main frustration is about people who claim they know the science and cite research from a while ago as the ultimate truth. But the thing with science and information is that it’s always changing and updating. So like you said, it’s like a religion that people hold onto, even after scientists discover new information that may prove the previous theory false. And then usually these same people see others as “idiots” for not “believing the science” even though it’s really the same people who don’t actually understand it, clinging on to old information.

We believe what we want to believe. That's how tribes work, that's how religions work, that's how politics work.
That's how we work. We are animals that have evolved and adapted, and our instincts and emotions override rational thought.
Rationality usually falls victim of our judgement and biases. We justify the reasons for the mere reason of protecting the territories that we draw with our minds.
Expecting people to follow logic is only reliable if they are getting something they want from it.

Cognitive dissonance requires challenging internal working models from an external experience.
People will believe things without evidence. Often. On a mass scale.
And, similarly, people also choose to not believe in things not because it challenges their internal working models but because it doesn't align with the tribe the support.
But I don't think most people reach a point of their internal working models being challenged.
What is more important is authority, consensus, reciprocity, and convenience. It's a balancing act of cost versus benefit, risk versus reward.
What people believe isn't being challenged, but how they interact with society for what they determine is the best survival strategy.

If that group does something drastic, they will likely agree, as that is who they are, they are part of that group, and if they try to disagree with that group, the more of that group that agrees with the change, the harder it will be to not change with it, because if they disagree, they will have to re-evaluate a part of their identity.

One could argue that you would be trying to manipulate the individual in this case, and the other person might feel attacked if you said that to them, but I know what you mean!
I have noticed, in my experience, that discussions with individuals or small groups in private (not on a social platform or where else an audience is expected to be watching) tend to be much more rewarding and productive than discussions with large groups in terms of getting people to change, as groupthink is a very serious challenge.
Yet, I am afraid that most of the time people still go back to their groups and risk being manipulated again, particularly when they have formed a strong identity within said group. Ideally, if this is the case, you might want to single out as many individuals at a time to prime them to think differently about the issue(s), and then maybe propose and have a group discussion about that idea to reaffirm progress or that the idea has been cemented? It makes sense that you would need to get in with the team so that you don’t look like a foolish or dangerous outsider.

Well... one major thing you seem to be missing is that in a lot of cases, people have "entrenched" themselves into a given position, and the damage to their reputation, credibility and/or social standing is too great to entertain the notion of admitting you have basically been Wrong (sometimes for years on end) and until now vocally advocated a position that you wish to radically change your mind about.
Whenever your argument kind of depends for its correctness on the assumption the other side is "dumb", it is more likely than not that your argument sucks. Most people aren't actually genuinely stupid at all... they are just committed to a certain position that is too costly to abandon, regardless of (more probable) facts.

And interestingly, it is the very same social media (on which many of us profess/establish our positions in one way or another) that then makes it harder to actually change one's mind when new facts come to light that appear more accurate. Ask yourself a simple question - how much more often would you be willing to change your position if you could do it without suffering any damage to your reputation or credibility...? I suspect the answer will be "way more often than I have so far".
This, by the way, may actually be a bigger problem for the "left" or liberal side of the spectrum, because changing their beliefs often in some way or another involves acknowledging that not every "victim" deserves to be helped (and so you basically become a bit more of an "a**hole", broadly speaking)

@@Irresistance Think about it a different way. The left doesn't necessarily think everyone deserves help, but if everyone, at least had shelter, decent food, basic healthcare: just basic things to make their lives seem worth it to them to be better, we would all be safer. Our streets would be cleaner, and everyone's life would be uplifted.
European countries have been doing this for years. They have surpassed us now on nearly everything, including life expectancy. They aren't building more prisons they are finding other uses for those buildings.
I don't like or think we should have political parties or sides. It gives way to going along with a group, division and obstruction to a point of stagnation and destruction. Like we have now.....
I believe, individuals should think on their own and freely speak their minds, discuss issues and vote alone.
In the US we have a very money corrupted system that both parties' representatives are taking a huge part in. But there is one huge difference, one is willing to do anything, including letting us die in huge numbers to keep their money grabbing greedy positions and the other isn't. One is willing to steal their positions by any means and claim from the start the other side is doing the stealing. I don't like either major party, but the right has made it clear they are not for the American people, only their selves. And if we put them back into power, they will never give it up. They will kill any and all that try to take it from them.
*So, please, think of your own loved ones when you say things about what other human beings deserve. and have that decide on who you vote into power. These are far worse and dangerous times than many think. I wish you well.

Skeptics also ask questions, but a big difference between skeptics and denialists is that skeptics listen to answers and regard evidence as paramount. Denialists tend to see the piles of evidence against their claim, and see a conspiracy theory to perpetuate a hoax. But skeptics accept good evidence. Skeptics have a lot of respect for science, and denialists are usually out to undermine scientists working in the field where they have an agenda. Denialists will wear the costume of scientific thinking, but they usually show a piss-poor understanding how … the accumulation of studies and data work. (For instance, they promote the idea that if one study can be found to be flawed, this brings down the whole theory, as if the other hundreds of studies don't count.)
This distinction is really important, because the role of skeptics is to dispute and even disprove outrageous conspiracy theory claims. Skeptics fight against denialists. That’s why I'm interested in skepticism - I fear that there's a surge of denialist thinking in our culture fueled by new media (which is great at a lot of good things, but also good at spreading misinformation) and the explosion in both complications in world politics and the everyday person's awareness of them. As science begins to dictate more and more of what we know, there's also a cultural backlash that's related to the overall backlash against modernism. Skepticism is becoming more and more important as the political troops to defend science. So when people who are part of the anti-science backlash call themselves "skeptics," this confuses the issue.

Yes they are. Nobody really knows the entire truth, at best most of us just know half truths. We currently hold a lot of beliefs that are regarded as "facts" by the scientific community or majority of people that people 200 years from now will laugh at. Always been that way, and always will be. We might get very close to the truth but we won't actually reach it. 200 years ago many people in the scientific, medical and whatever community regarded things as "facts" that are simply laughed at nowadays and people say "How could've anyone believed that shit", same thing will happen 200 years from now when our descendants will look down upon us as less intelligent and less worthy than them, and this cycle will continue as long as recorded history and civilization exists.

I think another problem is that we've all heard of the quote "it's hard to win an argument with a smart person, but dam near impossible to win one against a dumb person" or a variation of that.
The problem is that both sides see it this way, no side would of course claim to be the dumb side so both sides see themselves as the smart side. But now who's the dumb one?
A lot of quotes and arguments have this problem, the problem of "the other side is wrong/stupid so everything favors me".

While I agree with the thesis (Facts don’t change minds; People do) there are some points brought forward that I disagree with, and some important points that are ignored completely. For one thing (and I’ll apologize in advance for the length of this post) the idea was presented that people have more facts than ever before, yet we are more polarized than ever before. Well, this is half true. In America, I see more polarization, yes. On the other hand, I see few ‘facts’; what I tend to see are a plethora of opinions masquerading as facts. I see this in the newspaper articles, internet, magazines, and of course, UA-cam. That is scary, and that is a primary reason (among others) why we have polarization. I am not seeing people on either side of a set of facts; I’m seeing certain issues forced to the front of a lot of other issues, pushed into the faces of Americans, in an attempt to obfuscate facts and sway opinions.
For instance, COVID takes precedence as a factor in our mortality statistics; however, little is discussed about our many other problems, which I personally feel are more important, such as the rise in illiteracy amongst the ‘educated’. I’m tired of seeing misspellings or bad grammar or poor reasoning presented in “authoritative” articles. It’s almost commonplace, and it’s indicitive of the massive problems with our education system as a whole that have been quietly been swept under the political rug for decades. Or what about the spike in violence across America, in almost every venue (now a huge problem in the airlines industry) even as gun control laws are the most stringent in American history? There is a strong push in the media to limit guns even more, but in other countries where this has been done violence hasn’t slowed.
It’s people (not guns, or knives, or automobiles, or irrational, polarizing rhetoric) that are dangerous. But we aren’t, as a nation, going to see any viable, worthwhile solutions when there is such a strong push to block some ideas and influence our thoughts (via the internet, primarily) while simultaneously downgrading the quality of education in our public school systems. In America, we have a situation where there is absolutely NO accountability for our media sources. The idea behind free speech, according to Thomas Jefferson and the majority of our founding fathers, was that educated, rational people could easily sort through presented ideas and discard the worthless and/or irrelevant. This is one of the reasons for Jefferson’s support of a public education system. (That, and to help erode the class system that was - and still is - prevelant.) Well, if we don’t teach Americans how to reason anymore (and we don’t) and yet, we have thousands of conflicting ideas screaming at us through television and internet (where people spend hours every day) then… yes, we can’t even agree on what facts are ‘facts’, because frankly it becomes almost impossible to determine what is true and what is propaganda. People will instinctively side with the information that they feel most comfortable with, and they will support it, NOT in an effort to belong to a group, necessarily, but rather out of sheer human laziness and cowardice. It’s much easier to go with the flow then to take the effort to sort through data, learn the truth, and then make a stand. Most people just don’t have the will or the mindset to be a free people. That’s sad, but look around you. What do you see?
For instance, I was once in an argument with someone re: the affect of sugar on children. My opponent was a highly-educated school teacher who went to the internet and quickly pulled three studies from the internet that backed her opinion that sugar does NOT have a major influence on children’s behavior or their ability to learn. I read those studies and found a couple of more. The two I found took a long time to unearth, but they involved much larger groups of children (I believe over 100 times more) than the studies my opponent had produced, and they indicated an enormous change in children’s brain chemistry when sugar was introduced, along with a host of behavior issues. Of the three studies that the other teacher had found, one wasn’t really a true scientific ’study’; it had a very small population of children in the study (less than 100) and it cited the first study she had found as further ‘proof’ of it’s findings. THAT study was funded by Hershey’s Chocolate, which also had a SMALL population of children participating, so…. I’m thinking that my material was more pertinent (larger studies) and the findings more accurate (sugar definitely causes behavior issues in most teen/preteen students) than what she had discovered in a brief search on the internet. Also, those studies supported my empirical-based findings. (Believe me, you don’t teach much the day after Halloween.)
What really got to me, though, was that I spent a week reading through the materials she had presented (basically all she had were just links to the studies) and then reading the links within the studies. Most of the material she had was worthless, but she hadn’t even bothered to investigate/evaluate the information. It matched her opinion; that was all that mattered. (Once I proved this, she was very embarrassed and angry - rarely spoke to me again, and only when she had to. That was the only good thing to come out of this incident.) Unfortunately, I don’t think that this incident caused her to change, or even question, her reasoning processes, nor did it change her view: sugar is okay for kids to ingest; it doesn’t cause any major changes to their behavior.
This is a SIGNIFICANT problem: even IF you have a slew of incontrovertible, proven, investigated and authenticated FACTS, you still can’t get people, even highly-educated people, to adopt a different opinion or attitude if they are unwilling to change. It just won’t happen. And, given that we live in a world where false ‘facts’ and strong opinions are shoveled down the media streams by the ton every moment, it is unlikely that we’re ever going to see the American government (or the world situation) grow better or stronger, because these two entitites rely on people to support them, and if the American people are kept fractured and misinformed, we’re basically all sitting on a broken foundation that is disintegrating steadily. Eventually, this house will collapse.

Excellent post man, I really dug it. We must be related because we think a lot alike. You have shown a superb use of questioning ability and critical thinking skills, something I also do. I also understand that I am not correct about everything I believe, which is the actual key to being smart. You have to question everybody, including yourself.
The people who control the world, or are attempting to do so don't like people like me and you. They use people's natural tendency to think like each other against them to divide, conquer and fool them.
I believe in two quotes attributed to Mark Twain:
"It's easier to fool someone than to convince them they have been fooled", and "I never let schooling get in the way of my education".

    Great video!
However, had some conflicting feelings about the statements on climate change.
I like to see myself as rational and driven by facts more than feelings, which ironically is part of the issue here, and makes it even more confusing.
So, a lot of data point to humans having way less influence on climate change than originally reported, and that much of the assumptions about our roll in the evolving climate are based on models that completely lack the precision needed to clame anything at all unfortunately.
Other than factual calculations on carbon pollution, predictions about the future seems somewhat like fumbling in the dark, especially when taking the past into account.
Based on this, my stance on climate change is very neutral, and I often tune out any extreme opinions voiced on this.
    But, am I fooling myself!?
The way you talked about it made me think I somehow belong in the camp that is blinded by their own thoughts... which would be a bit sad to say the least.
Have I been compromised, or could it be something else? 😜

That's because Aperture is blinded by his determined thoughts. Young people like him make this mistake all of the time. I think this way of thinking comes from too much trust in our authorities, which young people seem to always value too much.
I'm a lot like you, I'm pretty neutral when it comes to global warming. I don't see it changing as much as the warnings tell us, but I am also an environmentalist at heart and don't want to spoil our beautiful planet for everybody or everything.
This video, Aperture is obviously blinded by his political leanings. He's very smart, but young and inexperienced. He does not understand the true nature of people who will lie, push propaganda and do anything they can to gain control.
People in charge love to use fear to accomplish this.
You are more grounded than Aperture is, and understand the real world better. Good man
