In "Confutatis," the thunderous chords and fervent passages evoke a sense of impending judgment, as the text vividly portrays the fate of the damned. Mozart's music captures the tumultuous emotions of fear and supplication, painting a vivid picture of the terror of damnation.
In contrast, "Lacrimosa" unfolds with aching beauty, its mournful melodies and rich harmonies conveying profound sorrow and longing. The Latin text, meaning "tearful," beseeches divine mercy for the departed souls on the day of judgment. Mozart's setting of the "Lacrimosa" is imbued with a poignant tenderness, offering solace and comfort to the grieving.

pie Jesu Domine,

English translation:
When the accused are confounded,
and doomed to flames of woe,
call me among the blessed.
I kneel with submissive heart,
my contrition is like ashes,
help me in my final condition
That day of tears and mourning,
when from the ashes shall arise,
all humanity to be judged.
Spare us by your mercy, Lord,
gentle Lord Jesus,
grant them eternal rest. Amen.
