  • Most arms collectors today might not think they have much in common with a 17th century French King, but the similarities might be surprising. King Louis XIII is generally recognized as Europe's first real gun collector, so much so he was nicknamed "Louis l'Arquebusier." He studied, disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled his arms in his leisure time, and enjoyed hunting and target shooting.
This exquisite wheellock was one of the king's early additions to his collection. It dates back almost exactly as far as the King James Bible, near the very beginning of the Baroque period, and is one of the most ornamented and beautiful objects in his renowned Cabinet d'Armes.

Very informative video! This is a one-of-a-kind. I know it will be snatched up by a private collector, but it should be in a museum where it can be appreciated by many people.

During Louis the 13th reign, the famous "musketeers" were members of a regiment that gained its name because they were equipped with matchlock muskets.

So what exactly is the legal status of this piece? They mention that a notable American collector first "acquired" it, but no prior history. Does the Government of France have any potential to come in and make a claim that it is a cultural property that was stolen and demand its return? Seems like a dubious purchase even if you had the money to burn...

They don't need a reserve for this. They will likely have a starting bid at or close to a $1M

That depends on the side you were on. The king felt he was taking what was his by birthright. I am sure the peasants would side with you.

I am shocked they are selling this piece! Why?? This should go to the French and displayed! Museum it and never let it be in public hands again!

The French are far left now and hate guns. Nobody with power in the country cares. It’s up to Americans now to save the history of firearms.
