I had never thought of the octave mandolin as an intermediate step between guitar and mandolin. That's a rather clever perspective and approach to the instrument.
what is the tuning --i tuned my ovation octave standard guitar tuning in order not to learn new finger pats------string pairs dgbe= 4321 still hes the octave mando sound!!!!!!!!!
many tenor guitars often swap between that tuning and the standard mandolin tuning, gdae. Gdae seems to be what is used for most if not all clips in these videos. If your worried about learning new fingerings because you already play guitar, don't. I'd say it'll serve you better in the long run just to learn them, and they're pretty easy to pick up. just get a cord sheet or look up one online and teach yourself, you wont have much difficulty.
The BEST part of playing mandolin after years with the guitar is that the different tuning opens me up to different melodies and scales. I find it really easy to make things much more interesting than what I was doing on guitar.
My hands are large but I don't like playing an instrument with that long a scale tuned in fifths. I am not interested in playing an instrument that is painful to play. I have discovered that the longest scale length tuned in fifths is fifteen inches. I play melody on my guitar banjo tuned in fourths. Could you imagine playing a double bass tuned in fifths.
China? How does our company work and where do we make our mandolins? We make mandolins in Qingdao, China and Marshall, Michigan ChinaMarshallvery popular Northfield Octave Archtop, and it sells for $500 less!!! We can't hardly keep these in stock folks! I have given up on playing instruments tuned in fifths with scale lengths longer than fifteen inches. I prefer to play instruments with long scales tuned in fourths. Just take a twelve string guitar and put unison strings on it. If you are a guitar player you will get that sound with out having to do all that stretching which is a lot more work and is always slower.
You don't know how much I NEED one of these instruments - how much of my soul do you want?

If I take the low e and a strings off my old 12 string it should sound similar to this ?(Yeah,I realize could never sound as good as this)
