    Painkiller is 1000% not a beginning riff, I think all guitar players can speak on that cause I don’t think anyone sits down and says yep that song is going to be one of the first songs I learn right as they pick up a guitar

    I'd say they're great songs for beginners to work on so as to develop a solid technique.
    I've always played by ear when it comes to riffs, but never took the time to see the songs through.
    Bass on the other hand was a different story, I could play the whole ''RATM, Evil Empire'' album all the way through when I was a kid.
    Tangent:
    Also, the very first concert I ever went to, New Years Eve 94'95 @ the Detroit Fairgrounds. They shared a ticket with Helmet.
    (Front and center when Helmet struck the first chord of 'in the meantime', I had an idea of what to expect but no clue of the intensity. I was a little guy 15 ys. old, almost suffocated in the squash pit until I got the gist. After that I was hooked.
    As my addiction progressed the concerts I attended got heavier and the pits got harder. I hit rocks bottom when a so called friend of mine pushed me into a 'Cannibal Corpse' pit full of Skinheads at a show called 'The Fat Tour' and I died... Thankfully I was beaten back to life and remain pit free to this day.💀👍

    Downfall? A bit surprised at that one, I wouldn’t have said it’s for a beginner. Helps getting the alternate picking motions down? Sure, but not a beginner riff. Oh and a slight correction, halfway through the riff, it changes to 8 on the low E and A instead of 0 7 on the A (I know this since I’ve got a good ear and I’ve seen the live footage)

    • @KevinBalke
      @KevinBalke  2 роки тому +7

      I think it's a good exercise when you just play the basic pattern over and over, even for beginners (so I skipped the 8 in the low E to not make it more complicated). It's not an easy riff at all, but it's somewhat easy to understand and could help beginners to - well - not be beginners anymore.

    • @metalftw9652
      @metalftw9652 2 роки тому +1

      @@KevinBalke I understand in terms of an exercise, but it’s just changing it means you’re not playing the actual riff and if anything you say it’ll make beginners… well not beginners anymore, I actually think the real version would defo be a good exercise (that is a tricky one to get down)

    i started with bass and moved on to guitar as soon as i found out that the bass player for van halen/van hagar didn't get chicks because of his stellar bass skills... (it was his stellar back up vocals), the very first song i learned on bass wasn't an easy one.. it was an introduction into my walking bass line phase that ultimately lead me to my ska jag. the song was "pea" off of one hot minute by R.H.C.P. so i wanted the chicks... all i did was add two chords and learned some basic structure (stereotypical power chord, down tune, one note solos...ect you get the picture.) its easier to start with 2 less strings until you get the hang of the basics.

Learn to alternate between chugging a palm muted open E string and playing 5ths on the A string and you are now getting very metal... songs come and go but the techniques remain the same. Not a bad collection.
    Not that complicated technique-wise, but great to train timing and stopping with triplets etc.

    They all sound good, I am just wondering what you use for backing tracks? A drum machine or some variant of one?

    It is a fact that in recent years, measured by the TOP 50 hit lists of the largest music markets in the world, no human musicians were involved in more than 80% of the songs / hit recordings. And the computer-generated sound is still on the rise. So let's all support young musicians who make handmade music. Only if we buy their records, DVDs and merch do we enable the young bands and musicians to turn their passion into a profession and also to be able to make a living from it. The ROCK N ROLL is crying out for help folks...🤘🎸🎹🎷🎤🎺🥁🤘.

      I could be wrong here as it's been a good number of years since I played guitar, but I am pretty sure they are simplified versions of the actual songs. For example, 2 minutes to midnight is missing the root note on the chords on the A string.
      If you're a beginner, you'll get there in time, but it's worth noting that things considered 'beginner' can range up to anything you'd expect to run in to up to around grade 3 or 4 difficulty stuff. It can get pretty damn complex in some places so it's never to be mistaken with things you should expect to just pick up and nail first try.
      But the key is keep practicing and you'll get there dude. Just don't forget to take regular breaks so your brain can actually process the things you're learning!

      so this is the approach i took with learning in the beginning. just play the single root note... that is the note that is mostly numbered... for example the song "am i evil", you would be playing the root note... that is the notes that are marked "0", "3", "5" and so on for the rest of the rift.. don't worry about the other number until you get more comfortable with finger placement and then you can introduce other note making it a power chord. OR you can conveniently switch to bass... (way more fun but less chicks in my opinion)
