There are ultranationalists both in China and the Philippines. That pinned comment is an example. As for me, I think that China and the Philippines had strong cultural ties before Western colonialism fucked both of our countries up. It’s time to revive those ties and promote peace and stability in our region.
I’ve been in China and travelled around there for more than half a month. I can say that the Chinese people are friendly people and China is different from how the West portrays it. I truly hope that our countries can develop together and have better relations.

For as long as the CCP claims territories which weren't even theirs in the first place, harmony would never be achieved in the region.
Moreoever, the Philippines (specifically the ancient kingdoms that formerly reside in what is today the territories of the Philippines), much like its ASEAN neighbors, have long sailed the waters surrounding the West Philippine Sea long before any Chinese dynasty had done the same.
The only first time the Chinese had a true blue-water navy was during the Ming dynasty, even then they were lagging behind in maritime presence in the region as compared to the kingdoms of Majapahit or Tondo (to name a few).
Long story short, China has never nor will ever have the right to claim the waters of the West Philippine Sea.

    • @123MoMama

I said the CCP, not the Chinese people in general.

I've been studying bout geopolitics for many months now and this teritorial dispute only sparked during Aquino's term when Obama planned to "Pivot To Asia". I'd recommend u to check John Pilger's "A coming war on China" documentary that explains what triggers this cold war. As for Philippines and China, our country shud talk one-on-one without western interference and work it out.

It is a complicated issue and is, unfortunately, hurting both countries: from a cultural, societal, economic, technological, and environmental perspective. An uneducated and a very passionate chunk of the population from both countries spit on each other, their shared culture, and on their own people (Filipinos with East Asian descent in the Philippines and Chinese with Filipino descent in mainland China), with the addition of technological developments and business related endeavors by both countries also being hampered by complications. Much love from a concerned citizen of the Philippines, hopefully our various issues will be resolved in the near future.

Chinatowns all over the world came to be because of the same explanation of Alex, only re-replicated in modern times. Nothing is new under the sun. What’s new is when Filipinos are hostile. Filipinos are known to be one of the hospitable fun-loving people on earth and should continue to choose to be kind. At the end of the day, just remember that Mainland Chinese have their plates full of internal-quiet struggles. It’s hard to FULLY grasp their struggles unless you have strong connections in Mainland. in Pinas, a northerner can go south and be accepted. Regulatory and socially, this is harder in China.

Hi Alex: I am, as we speak, writing an article on the big elephant in the living room: racism. I'm treating the subject from every aspect I can think of: the ethnicity, culture, education, geography and level of enlightment of the individual. That your compatriots in the Philippines do not mix with the natives, one has even never eaten Pinoy food and one local noted in his comment that the Chinese expats do not seem to want to integrate with the indigenous community all speak to that animal that I find in the living room. Your personal qualities seem to encompass many of the characteristics that help you transcend that elephant, so I commend you for being. When I finish documenting my thoughts on that animal, I would like to share the work with you for your comment. Good luck and keep up the good work.

Interesting! I would suggest simply agreeing that the South China Seas is the joint sovereignty of China and all ASEAN countries that are part of the S China Seas. And that outside military forces should be excluded from these waters unless all the jointly sovereign countries unanimously consent to their presence. The economic rights should accrue to all the peoples of this region, and security of these waters should be guaranteed by all the countries jointly. They can establish a common maritime security force to patrol these waters for pirates. The navies of their countries should be allowed to pass through freely as long as the mission is peaceful or civilian, or to defend against external threats from outside powers. Just my suggestion!

Then WWII happened and the US persuaded Japan to invade China and Philippines. So China and Philippines are like close brothers. Except the Philippines have had Americanization for 100 years. At least I’m hearing an honest word from the native Chinese who is very neutral and a wide perspective of overall situation. In most countries, some Chinese people from the mainland were used to isolate them self into their own small community including my country, despite we are all Chinese, but the mainland Chinese is finding very difficult to interact with the local and I don’t know why, my grand father and father were from Guangzhou, they came as as a 3rd generation migrant before the war, but they’re able to blend in to the local society and becomes one of the local, and many Chinese in Singapore were also migrated from FuJiang, and we’re Singaporean now.

I reckon it maybe due to their weak motivation to integrate into the local society, there are enough mainlanders for them to be friend with and it’s way more easier to stick with people who have the same cultural background, so they are too lazy to step out of their comfort zone.

It is a complex issue. I will threw my 2 cents in. The entire argument from two sides is this. The Philippines states that it is close to them thus UNCLOS applies. However the Chinese states that there is a clause in UNCLOS relating to prior claims before signing of UNCLOS. Basically, immediately after WW2 this area was claimed by the KMT of Republic of China. At the time, Philippines belonged to USA, and Vietnam belonged to France, Malaysia belonged to the UK. None of the 3 countries disputed the territorial claim. US navy actually ferried KMT troops to some of the small islands to plant stone plaques claiming those islands officially. After these 3 countries achieved independence now they are claiming the islands. Not saying which side is right or wrong. But at the very least the Chinese have an argument. And, this is not the naked aggression that USA is trying to portray right now.

I think most people who are objective don't really care about how the countries are fighting over these islands, they all have the rights to do so. However, the problem here isn't about the "islands" but rather "UNCLOS". This is something nationalists and fanboys alike try hard to confuse people about, to the point of misrepresenting the understanding of "sovereign territory" claim.
UNCLOS is a treaty and is also the prevailing law of the sea. China signed this treaty thus they are subject to the treaty law. This treaty determine the marine boundary and rights from one's sovereign territory. So what does the nationalists and fanboys alike try to do? They try to confuse people you can claim marine area as sovereign territory which by customary law not allowed. Sovereign territory has always been referring to non-permanent underwater features aka lands.
So what has UNLCLOS has to do with China's island claim in SCS? UNCLOS define the marine boundary and rights base on the type of lands. Under the definition of UNCLOS, all the so-called islands in SCS are classified as "rocks". Rock is only entitled to 12 nautical miles of water. Just how far is "12 nautical miles", you can draw up on the google map. With that, you compare to China claim of marine boundary and area which obviously exceeding this "12 nautical miles" and that means China is violating UNCLOS treaty law.
Not only is China violating that part of the law, China also sent warships to harass neighboring countries' attempts to develop their rightful marine resources as defined by UNCLOS, therefore China violated the law yet again.
Still, violating the law with 2 distinct different actions are not enough. China sent their state owned companies to develop the marine resources which by UNCLOS is illegal, therefore violating the law again.
By violating the treaty law, it give all nations the legal reason to pressure China. To date, not just USA and UK are protesting. Germany and France too have been protesting. Afterall, it is a matter of treaty law which affect the world. I think it is also important to note that ASEAN too have commented all parties to respect UNCLOS.

Thanks for your openness and honest opinions. Now that China has emerged as a strong nation, having major international impact, I hope Chinese citizens will not follow the American path to feel superior or arrogant related to other nations and nationalities. This will be an important element of education and diplomacy for China to develop and/or maintain good relations with others around the world, especially nearby in Asia where some governments and people will naturally have concerns about the ambitions of such a strong and influential neighbor. In this period of anti-China aggressiveness from the West, I am very supportive of what is being achieved by China. I am happy to see it replace the US as the strongest economy in the world. I believe Chinese leaders correctly will not accept the colonial or racist attitudes of certain Western nations. I am confident they also understand the importance for China to maintain mutual cooperation and respect in their relations with other non-aggressive countries.

They weaponized demographics as mean to rule, conquer and carry on ethnical and cultural "cleansing". They want to destroy Taiwanese state of free and democratic chinese. They threatened Japan nuclear war, they threatened surrounding small countries by their warships. And your belief to totalitarian and corrupted CP leaders is wishful belief without any substance.

Yes, exactly if you become objective and look at the international water law, Philippines has a large claim on the island. Plus, it's very close. China pushing its claim because of historical data and mostly on the wealth reserves gives the whole world an implication that it does not respect other countries, especially the Philippines. UN says China has no claim, but Chinese government doesn't respect the ruling. It is ironic that they want other nations to respect their claim, but they're the ones building military bases and patroling the area. Why are they doing it? Because Philippines lacks military and economic power to fight them. Philippines can only talk and negotiate, while China can do whatever it wants. A trademark of a real bully.

I guess everyone has their own lifestyle preferences. Getting 90-100km out of Manila is at least a few hours on a good day in the middle of the night, I like the quieter towns in the Philippines.

China and the Philippines are friends since time immemorial. You can even read stories in history that there is a Chinese Emperor in China that became good friends with A Philippine Sulu King, and the later has his tomb and decendants in China until now. The tomb is a museum now and the curator is his descendants and a princess too. America is a young country. As a Chinese Filipino(my father is from Fujian), I understand how America created this friction in the South China Sea. America is always the bully. China did what has to be done. America has a long track of offenses in flying over China before, and since China's economic growth, American spyplanes flies over the regions they're not suppose to be in. I really understand that guarding of the South China Sea against Americans is right and also good for the Philippines. Only that the Americans keep on talking bad about it because they really are the ones interested in the Philippines. America is so greedy. I know that if Philippine leaders really consider to only sit talk with Chinese government about the region, conflicts will be easily resolved without media and American government opinions. There is more security with China guarding the South China Sea. Only America created the tension in the South China Sea issue.

If you have the impression that Chinese people don’t integrate with the local Filipino people. Just look at yourself in the mirror. You already have Chinese ancestry. The Chinese have been mixing with the Austronesians for thousands of years. In fact >6000 years ago the Austronesian homeland was located in present day China.
Regarding cultural differences that tends to melt away the longer they stay here. Philippines is the melting pot of the East Asian peoples from different East Asian countries. With the rapidly growing Korean population in the Philippines, this trend will only grow.
