Because in Auckland, especially South where the largest concentration of PI's live we've never associated with Filipinos like that and they always hang with the Asians because they are Asians. They're not part of Pasifika or PolyFest. If anything there's more Cambodians and Laos I went to school with who hung out with Islanders. Didn't really know any Filipinos.

I'm Pacific Islander and I find fun and interesting to see how much our culture is similar to Asian and Hispanic cultures. I sometimes get surprised when someone actually guesses where I'm from, because most often times I'm mistaken for a Mexican or even a Native American.
Philliphines was passed around by the world. Spain, USA, Japan... Although I don't see much Japanese influence in anything. They were probably more about invading and raping than just basic colonizer shit.

i relate to Nikki so bad! I’m a Peruvian Nikkei living in Canada (my great grandparents immigrated from Japan to Peru and my parents and I immigrated to Canada from Peru). So I had a lot of struggle with my identity. I never felt connected to Japan because I didn’t speak the language even though I looked the part. But nobody believed me when I said I was latina or Peruvian. It’s always comforting to know I’m not alone.

That's crazy that I click on this vid and this is LITERALLY what I was talking about with my cousin today with that.. I never had a cultural identity crisis, 'cause I lived similarly to David, Bart, Joe and Dante (I'm Filipino in Stockton; close to Sacramento). However, one of my YOUNGER cousins who's mixed like Nikki DID go through what she went through when she was little (5), 'cause where she lived is predominantly White along with most of her family on that side. And the FIRST time she met us she whispered to her mom "They look like me!" (Kinda wanna cry now.. lol)

Whoa, I didn't know Dante was from Pittsburg. That's only a few cities away from where I grew up. If I'd been born a few years earlier, we might've crossed paths. Aside from me, there were only two or three Filipino kids in my high school class. As far as other Asians went, there were a couple of Vietnamese girls, one Iranian, and a brother and sister from Cambodia. The rest of the class population was split about 80/20% Caucasians and Mexicans. It's kind of crazy looking back on it and seeing how the demographics have changed over the last few decades.
I didn't know much about my Asian side growing up. My grandma was an orphan, and was just a teenager when the Japanese occupied the Philippines. We didn't know where she came from, but she definitely wasn't Filipina. I was also told that I was part Spanish because of my grandpa's surname, but of course no one bothered verifying it. I eventually learned it was just a byproduct of The Philippines' colonial history. According to a few different DNA tests, I have no Spanish heritage whatsoever; it's a crazy blend of Southern Chinese, Taiwanese, Filipino, and traces from all over SE Asia on one side, and England, Scotland, and Scandinavia on the other. No wonder I look vaguely foreign to everyone!
